- This book is a great resource. Something you want to have besides you while developing PowerBuilder applications. The chapters on distributed development with PB 6 walk you through every step of development. I loved the book.
- This book helped me with my development process. I could look at the examples in the book and create my prototype for developing distributed applications with PowerBuilder 6 on time! It has helped me build a relationship with my current client. The book has neat tips and tricks for every aspect of development with PowerBuilder.

- I have my improved my OOP skills after reading this book. The coverage on nonvisual user objects, OLE ,application framework design and OOAD are excellent. It would have been even better if the PFC chapter is elaborated
Waitng for their new release on PowerBuilder. A must have in your library
- This book pretends to teach advanced OO and design patterns and falls woefully short. The authors don't have any grasp over the fundamentals of OO. Don't waste your money on it. This book isn't worth the paper it is printed on. There are better books on powerbuilder. If you want OO or design patterns pick up the books by Booch or Gamma et al.
- I bought this book based on the reviews at amazon. The time I spent on this book could have been better utilized elsewhere. The author tries to talk about powerbuilder/OOP/design patterns/ActiveX/OCX/VB and so on without any grasp of the concepts underlying any of these technologies and methodologies. The result is a hopeless morass of confused ramblings with no direction. I wonder how some of the other reviewers gave this sorry excuse of a book 5 stars.
- How WROX decided to push this terrible piece of writing on their readers is beyond my comprehension. I am a senior Sybase/PowerBuilder programmer, and I felt like laughing at the inaccuracies and inconsistencies that I constantly encountered in this stinker. When I read the reviews at Amazon that this is a great OOP/Design Patterns book, I was intrigued enough to snap up a copy. I am a great fan of using Patterns in my code. But the authors of this book give a completely uneducated and uninformed writing on this complex subject. Coders who are experienced in Patterns/OOP will laugh at this garbage. Novice programmers will be misled completely. I will never buy another WROX title again. My guess is that the reviewers who gave this turkey 5 stars must be friends of the author.
- Picked up this book in the clearance bin at a technical bookstore close to my work place for Five Dollars. I thought I had an incredible bargain in my hands until I read the book. What a piece of trash! I do a lot of Object oriented coding with Powerbuilder on WindowsNT4.0. I was interested in the design patterns & OO programming techniques that the authors say that they are covering in the book in the preface. I have already read the Patterns book by Erich Gamma/John Vlissides and I was interested in how the authors might have applied those techniques with PowerBuilder. It was a major disappointment for me when I discovered that the authors had no clue of OO programming and a very bad understanding of Patterns in particular. They seem to know enough about Powerbuilder, but they are totally ignorant of OOP and patterns.
I spent only five dollars to buy this book but still I feel ripped off. BUYER BEWARE!

1 comments about GUI-Based Design and Development For Client/Server Applications: Using PowerBuilder, SQLWindows, Visual Basic, PARTS Workbench.
- This book was written in 1994. The information is very out dated. It's a book written from a person with mainframe experience wanting to learn about client server. Some of the information is still correct, but for instance, the author claims that in 5 years (by 1999) there will be no mainframe computers and everything will be client server! Not the book for me.

- This is by far the easiest-to-read and -understand book I have read on PowerBuilder. It is very well edited also, with no grammatical or spelling errors that I could discern. This is a far better book on PowerBuilder than I have read by any other author. Bravo!
- Throughout many books available for PowerBuilder today this one is more deeply and carefully covers all the details you will need from day to day operations. I've red over dozens of books and I think that this one the only one that is not tells you where to click, but teaches you how to build an application and logical design. I do hope that authors of the book (B. Smith and G. Schaad) will issue a newer version that will cover features implemented with PB 6.x and PB 7
- This book teaches not only basic concepts of PowerBuilder, but also how to create real world applications. The authors are very serious on the quality of this book, one of the authors responded my e-mail about this book. I hope to see more books from these authors.

- I think that this book does an excellent job of pointing out expecially good and especially bad places to put common code. The book gives new programmers explanations for why certain techniques are better than others. I would like to have seen more PFC discussed, but there was not enough room. If they made a PFC Book with advice, I would buy it.
- This book covers most of the advanced topics such as eMail Interface, ORCA, Network , Performance issues, Administration. The example is very good. Also the basic concepts is covered by this book is an advantage. This is really very good reference for the developer who wants to do more advanced function in their applications.

5 comments about Distributed Application Development With Powerbuilder 6 (Powerbuilder Developer's Library).
- This book is very helpful in covering all of the details of building an Distributed PB Application. I recommend it for others to read for it is very helpful and informative.
- This book cover all aspects of Powerbuilder Distributed components. It is clear, informative, well written and contain many examples. Although covering what is generally considered an advanced topic, this book should be understandable by Powerbuilder beginners. Most technical books covering a product are bad. This is a welcome exception. Overall an excellent book.
- I just can't wait until I finish reading the entire book before I post this review because this is the best PowerBuilder book I have ever read. This book leads you through the steps on how to develop a distributed PowerBuilder applications. This is a must have and the only book you need to learn how to write DPB applications. Well done, Michael !!
- If you are a Powerbuilder Guru, you must read this book, otherwise you'd take the risk to know less than your apprentices. If you are a novice, you must read it to become a Guru. Don't loose time with me, go to buy one!
- Distributed Application Development with PowerBuilder 6 is dedicated to distributed application development in the PowerBuilder environment. It focuses on Distributed PowerBuilder. This text is packed with code samples to guide you every step of the way. Also included is a robust server framework I have used on real-world projects. A "must buy" for anyone preparing to go to the next level of PB development!
