  1. Instead of wasting your time having you build applications you'll never use, this book gets you into real Powerbuilder code. It takes time to explain some of the basics, but it is a well-written reference for intermediate to expert PB5 programmers. Excellent coverage of the new PB5 features and great help in migrating from 4.0! I recommend any PB developer to add this book to their library.

  2. One of the best book I read on powerbuilder. it is a good learning book for the intermediate & expert PB5 programmer.

5 comments about Using Powerbuilder 5: Special Edition (Using ... (Que)).
  1. Great book for beginners. I started with PB using this book and by the end of it I was a professional developing complex applications using PB. Covers practically A to Z of P

  2. Loved the book..I would like to learn more about the PFC services,,can not seem to find any books talking about PFC..this book does not even mention it..slight editorial oversights, but all in all a great book from beginner to intermiedate..chapter on visual object is great..like to see more about implementing non visual objects into a real database application..too many books say this is how you create a class but do not show you how to implement them in a realistic example

  3. I am very upset with the last book I bought, "Special Edition Using PowerBuilder 5" (ISBN 0-7897-0754-3) by Charles Wood. I have bought several books of QUE before and have never seen so much mistakes. I have read up to chapter 11 with lots of difficulty because of the mistakes in datawindow names, object names, etc. If you try to follow the example given in the book you will end up lost because of scripts with errors in variable and function definitions.

I really have never read a book with that many errors. I bought it because I am the owner of "Special Edition Using Windows 95", "Special Edition Using Gupta SQL Windows" and "Special Edition Using Excel for Windows 95" and thought this book would keep the good quality of the other ones I had, but after reading it I am very disappointed.

I hope in the future you should spend more time and/or money controlling the quality of your products.

    Sincerely yours

    Hernan Boluarte

  4. I have purchased many books from QUE in the past but I have never had one fall apart on me in a week. The quality of binding is as poor as the worked examples. The fact that object names change from page to page leaves the newer user in total confusion. The only saving grace is that the reference section at the back is useful. Much better reading PB 6 Unleashed.

    Dave Nicolaou, UK Developer, Powerbuilder

  5. I picked up this book becuase I scanned through the first chapters and found the it easy to follow. It was not until I had invested too much time to start a new book that it disappointed me. The book appears as if Mr. Wood got about halfway through the book, then had to finish in a hurry. The sample application begins to refer to objects that have not been created in the tutorial. Even when the book refers to objects that were created, the name is often different than the name used in the tutorial, making it difficult to follow. In short, I would wait for the second "Special Edition" if you really want this book. Maybe they will correct the errors.

  1. PowerBuilder 6 A Developer's Guide is a must have. There are example code with real world solutions to real world applications. You can immediately piece together a complete system by using the techniques used in the many sample applications provided on the enclosed CD.

The CD is packed with sample applications, code, and reference material, as well as links to the author's Web site. Good luck!

  2. I am relatively new to PowerBuilder having been in an actual production environment (outside of college) for about 7 months now and have read everything I can find on PowerBuilder. This is by far the best book I have been able to find. The author explains its capabilities clearly and the examples actually match the lesson. Far too often the examples briefly touch the subject and you finish a book no better off than when you began. Not so with this one. I highly recommend it for beginning PowerBuilder developers.

  3. If you purchase this book hoping to use the CD to follow the examples; DON'T. I tried to install the material following the author's instructions and had no success. When I e-mailed the author with an description of the error message; I received a non-response. I now have 1200 pages that should be tied to a working database to assist me in my development which now will not happen. Wait for the movie.

  4. Although this book provides a mildly structured approach to attacking powerbuilder, it lacks any qualitites one should look for as a developer. Index is lacking, poor examples, the order in which it presents its information is rather poor. Highlights of the book: it doesn't go in depth with much, and were it not so poorly written, it could be a good beginners manual.

  5. We just completed a week training with this book (though we're using PowerBuilder 8), with updates provided by the author. The entire class was up to speed so that on the 5th day, we were actually working on the new application system. As we worked through the examples in the book, I kept seeing examples of functions that we had planned and would need in the application, so I started cutting and pasting the code, objects and sometimes entire windows into our new application. I'd guess that as much as 70-80% of the completed application will be derived directly from this material, so in my view, the book proved worth it's weight in gold (training and function for our company). The support and advice from the website has been very useful also. In all, highly recommended, has saved us weeks if not months of development time.

  1. I have read this book and I found it very useful for those who are beginning with internet projects (like me). It will explain step by step how to build good and efficient programs. The reason why I rated 8 is because the book doesn't explain too much (at all, in fact) the problems of database connection, and maybe it needs a little more explanation of features like mixing Java (not JavaScript) with PB and so on. Anyway, it's a very good book. Buy it, and learn.

  1. This is one Powerbuilder booK Which Teaches you how to write code from beginner to advanced level in an Excellent step by step HOW TO format. It does'nt waste time on theories as is the case with most PB books. The only Minus point about this book is that it doesn't cover PFC.I am eagerly waiting for PB 6 HOW TO to be released. I hope PFC 6.0 would be covered in that Edition. I hope the authors take notice of this.I strongly recommend this book For people who are not too comfortable with coding in Power builder but yet familiar with the concepts.

  2. This is a book which provides a lot of code in an excellent HOW TO format. It does not waste much time on theories as is the case with most other Powerbuilder books.Instead it teaches through practical examples and Provides step by step code. from beginner to advanced level.Lack of PFC coverage is the only minus aspect.I am eagerly waiting for their next release.(ie PB6.0 how to)

  3. This is a fantastic book which Provides a lot of code not found in other PB books that too in an excellent step by step HOW TO format. It mainly targets the intermediate to the advanced level Programmer although beginners can also benefit from it and advance quickly.Lack of PFC coverage is the only minus aspect about this book.It wastes very little time on theories as is the case with most other PB books.Topics covered include OLE, API calls etc. I am eagerly waiting for their next release.(ie PB6 how to)

  4. This is an excellent book on powerbuilder programming targeted mainly at intermediate and advanced level programmers and provides step by step code not found in other powerbuilder books. This book does not waste too much of time on theories ,but wherever possible provides useful hints.Till date, there is no powerbuilder book in the market that provides plenty of code, and this book does fill that void.Only minus point is lack of PFC coverage.I really wonder why waite group is yet to release their next version(ie PB 6 how to) and I am eagerly awaiting its release.

  1. The overeview chapters are the best that I've seen within an introductory PowerBuilder book. The chapters having to do with the Powerscript language are not as good as the overview chapters.

Overeall, a very good book for the beginning PowerBuilder programmer

  2. As with a most technical books, this one leaves a lot to be desired. To begin with, the authors assume the reader all ready posesses some knowledge or resource about Powerbuilder. The chapter on scripts is badly deficient as are the chapters on data windows. These are terrible deficiences since these two areas are where Powerbuilder developers spend lots of time. Explanations of how different features are blended into a single application are non-existant. Examples are non-existant and the instructions for the exercises are confusing and often incorrect.

  1. It would be much more useful if the examples were more analytical. Some "advanced" techniques (e.g. EHLLAPI , Message Object ,Master Detail Datawindows , Multi Table Updates , MDI Interface ,DynamicDatawindows etc.) should be covered in depth with "like a manual" examples.
