5 comments about Oracle Desk Reference.
- While this book does not contain a lot of detailed explanations about Oracle features, built-in packages, parameters, etc., it certainly does serve the purpose the I believe the author intended it to serve. It is a condensed version of about 10 different books from the core set of Oracle documentation. It is the single book I always carry in my briefcase while visiting clients - Extremely useful for quickly looking up syntax and definitions. Thanks so much for lightening the load!
- This book was written for Oracle experts. It provides specific information for Oracle commands, however it expects that you know what to do with the information. I use it all the time as I generally know what I want to do, and have a good idea about what command I need to use to do it, but I'm fuzzy on the exact syntax of the command. This one little book has replaced several large tomes from Oracle and remains a critical component to my Oracle toolkit. It is much more complete than any other Oracle reference I have found.
- What I like alot about this book besides compacting lots of great Oracle information used every day is the thickness of paper used to allow over 500 pages in half the space of other books thereby making the book alot easier to handle. This makes it much more accessible as a desk reference which is what it is intended to be. I have this plus a few other books in a small stack on my desk within armreach that I refer to frequently not only because they have great content but because they are easy to grab and flip through. The big, thick books look nice and impressive on a bookshelf but I'll bet many of you haven't opened them in years.
We have the pdf files of Oracle docs, anyway, so who needs the concrete blocks?
- I have a stack of Oracle Books... 8 and 9. This is the book I use the most. I always carry this book. I would like to see one small sample code on some of the more complicated syntax's, but otherwise it's a great book. The size of the book makes it so much more appealing than the rest of my books.
I would like to see a new/updated edition. Maybe add an appendix with some info on the dictionary tables.
- This is a great book I've kept with me for years. I used to reference all the time, but now I reference it less and less because it only covers through Oracle 8i. Is he going to come out with a edition that covers at least through Oracle 10g?

5 comments about Ocp Training Guide: Oracle Dba (Training Guides (New Riders)).
- This book has good organization; yet lacks the delivery of the goods. Touches on the subjects briefly; sometimes confuses the issues completely and shrouds things in more mystery than necesarry. The test questions are riddled with mistakes. Obviously whoever wrote them did not read it or any other reference materials. In short, need more and better meat than this to pass.
- The book is well written and provides the student with good working knowledge of Oracle 7/8. But the materials seem to be slightly out of sync with the exams. Some subject areas are covered in greater detail than necessary for the exam. A few of the exam question topics were not covered in the Training Guide. The book's review questions do not properly prepare the student for the complex type of questions on the exam.
- This book gives an excellent summary of the OCP-required knowledge base. I read it, and then read the Coriolis Exam Crams and Oracle Performance Tuning (Gurry, Corrigan). My only (minor) criticisms are the confusing PL/SQL section and the lightweight treatment of Tuning. Overall though, a very worthwhile purchase.
- I felt this book had the best exams and chapter review questions.
Nonethless I recommend you read all the OCP books out there, and take all the sample exams you can get you hands on.
- There are some small errors, but the book has good examples and covers most of the exam topics. It's easy to read and well organized. Since there aren't so many OCP study guides, you should give it a try.

5 comments about Sams Teach Yourself Oracle 8I on Windows Nt in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours Series).
- This book is very good value. Easy to read and understand and gives a lot of information to jumpstart using Oracle on Windows NT. A number of useful tricks are provided on how to use Windows NT effectively. Lot of good examples.
- The book is very poorly written, and is not useful at all. Please don't get fooled by the other "reviewer's" five star rating. If you must buy this book, I would urge you to go to a bookstore/library and browse through the book and decide for yourself. There are too many good books on Oracle out there to waste your money on this.
- Sadly I found this book to be next to useless. Learn Oracle in 24 hours, HAH. First of all, this book wastes more time talking about NT than it does about actually installing Oracle and connecting clients. In fact it provides only an explanation of the GUI install wizard and only a beta at that. By the way everything explained here is available in the Oracle documentation. If you install Oracle according to this book don't plan on using the client from which to work. If you get lucky you will connect, if not this book provides no help. As a matter of fact I have found very little information on Net8 connections in any book. Well I could go on, but don't waste your money if you are new to Oracle.
- The 5-star reviews are wrong. This is not a good book. There are no useful examples. The installation information is non-informative. All screen shots are from Oracle 8.1.3 Beta. Coming from an SQL Server background, this book was a waste of $30. Unfortunately, I don't have a suggestion for a better book.
- It can't even help me in setting up a useful Oracle 8i in my system. I have managed to setup the Oracle 8i on my system and able to interact with it with the help of the following Oracle8 for Dummies and Oracel8i for Dummies. The dummies' explanations are much clearer and more organized. At the end, I have donated this book to the charity.

1 comments about Implementing and Managing Oracle Databases.
- Our department just purchased mission critical internet applications that use Oracle, and no one had any idea what else we would need. This book helped us not only prepare for the implementation project, but also what we would need to look out for once we are in production.
