5 comments about Oracle Data Warehousing (Oracle Series).
- I found it to have a good explanation of general data warehousing terms and concepts, but not enought depht in terms of planning and designing for a data warehouse. I wouldn't recommend buying it.
- The Dodge and Gorman book is much, much better than this one. Also - buy a copy of Ralph Kimballs Data Warehouse Toolkit - its applies to DW and DM's. Another good book is Kimball's Data Warehouse Lifecycle book, but the Toolkit book is more concise.
- useless book for datawarehousing
- OK, if you work with Oracle there are some things, that will help you. Otherwise, if you search for more practical or even theoretical books, then look better for Ralph Kimball. This guy is the best in this field.
- Aimed at all levels of users, administrators and architects, "Oracle Data Warehousing" offers basics, project management, and technical tutorials.
The lightly referenced, verbose, chapters span: what is a data warehouse; things to consider; building the team; managing the data warehouse project; moving the data into the warehouse; Oracle's data warehousing features; data mining; datamarts; metadata; RAID; keeping your data safe; Oracle Express & OLAP Solutions; data mining tools; datamart tools; index and tuning issues. Strengths revolve around the attractive use of heading, lists, charts, screen-shots, and code examples, and the topical relevance to business of data warehousing. Weaknesses include: the 45% excess words for content, typos; simplistic business examples; a seeming Oracle advert focus; need for business success anecdotes; a need for more science/ rigor about machine learning and artificial intelligence; and a need for more about wider industry trends/tools. Overall this needed better editing, more business content, and more rigor to be considered worthwhile.

5 comments about Oracle Performance Tuning Tips and Techniques.
- Richard Nieniec has not only proven himself as a dynamic speaker, but as a writer as well. This book if full of needed information for any DBA, and is presented extremely well. This is not one to be read to as a sleep aid!! I highly recommend this book for Jr. to intermediate DBA's who understand how crucial performance really is. Explanations are clear and logical. Most readers who have worked in the Database field for any length of time will enjoy the wit and charisma of the writers.
- I've bought a lot of books about Oracle tuning. And after having read all of them , it's obvious that ORACLE PERFORMANCE TUNING TIPS & TECHNIQUES is the best available. As a very good addition, get ORACLE8i INTERNAL SERVICES, ORACLE8i & UNIX PERFORMANCE TUNING, and ORACLE8i SQL HIGH PERFORMANCE TUNING. This is the perfect bookshelf for becoming a GURU ;-)
- This book is well structured and offers lots of good tips to improve server side performances as well as application side improvements.
- I was happy with this book and it can help u find orcale tuning problems and find results fast.
- The guys who wrote this book know their stuff. The first chapter of the book will proabably address the majority of the problems that you will face with oracle performance tuning. The remaining chapters go in to detail on things to watch out for and various diagnostic tools and techniques.
It is a hefty tome that is not meant to be read cover to cover, so I would have thought the index would have been a little better.

4 comments about Learn Oracle 8i.
- This book is terrible. It doesn't read like a book - it is simply a list of terse definitions of various database topics.
Based on the Table of Contents, I was really looking forward to learning about data blocks, segments, extents, tablespaces, views, indexes, triggers, constraints, cursors, etc., when I bought this book. Unfortunately, this book was too confusing and poorly written to learn anything. I mean no disrespect to Mr. Romalho, but the fact that English is not his primary language is probably why the book reads so choppy. If anyone can recommend a book to me that covers the topics I previously mentioned, please email me at: stevenardone@hotmail.com.
- Learn Oracle 8i is a handy, fast-moving introduction to Oracle 8i database. This is a very visual approach to the material--the various components of Oracle are presented using screen shots at nearly every turn. This title is not an extensive presentation of the subject but rather an overview of the most important topics and the major components of the product. The easy-to-read language makes it quite a quick read and perfect for a speedy look at Oracle. The topics are well-presented, set in the correct context, and illustrated with real-world examples; however, this tutorial is aimed at the user rather than the administrator.
- I have had a chance to study the "Learn Oracle 8i". I found it highly comprehensive and extremely easy to understand even though I am doing it on my own. It is better than any "Teach Yourself" series I have come across. This book is ideal for the beginner, not for the advanced user. With this book I had a complete overview of the product in a short period of time.
- This book is just Ok for a beginner who wants to learn about Oracle Database for the first time. The title is misleading as it doesn't explain anything about Oracle Internet Features. Ideal title would have been 'Oracle for Beginners'

5 comments about Teach Yourself Oracle8 in 21 Days (Sams Teach Yourself).
- This book is a superficial overview of the Oracle 8.0.4 database. It is a disjointed overview of it's features. It just skips lightly from subject to subject in a seemingly ramdom order. The first 3 chapters are good, it goes quickly downhill after that. It's more appropriate for a management overview rather than for showing someone new to Oracle how to install and configure the product.
- Unlike other "21 days" texts, this book is not a tutorial that you can follow in front of your terminal or workstation. Many of the examples don't work at all. Did anybody at the publisher actually go through the book to see if any of this stuff makes sense? Obviously not. The only thing you'll learn (and in less than 21 days I might add) is that this book is a waste of time and a source of frustration. The book is geared toward Oracle8 on Windows NT 4. If you're running NT 4, skip this book and try "Oracle8 & Windows NT Black Book". Now that's a good book.
- There is a section in this book that claims that Oracle does not write to datafiles that are in hot backup mode. Although this is a common misconception, it is nevertheless false.
- This is one of two books I bought as part of a package 'Oracle JDeveloper Suite Personal Edition 1.1' put out by Oracle/MacMillan Digital Publishing USA. The package comprises two disks : Oracle JDeveloper 1.1/Oracle Application Server 4.0.7/Oracle Enterprise Edition 8.0.5. The books are absolutely useless and I had to find four other books to learn how to install and how to use the package. It is not the normal style of Teach Yourself books where one can learn by matching what is in the book. I am afraid this book puts me off from anymore Teach Yourself books by SAMS.
- This book does nothing more than teaches one how to use the Oracle wizards to create tables, users, etc... If your new to Oracle, you should learn the syntax of the command lines even thought your in a NT environmet.
