1 comments about Essential Oracle 7.
- As someone who has been forced to learn ORACLE on the fly (as many people do), this book has been great. It's concise and useful. There's very little bits & bytes jargon (except where absolutely necessary), so you get to the nitty gritty on how to get around - which is what I needed. Not for the ultimate techie who wants every detail (use the ORACLE docs for that!)

5 comments about Oracle8 How-To: The Definitive Oracle8 Problem-Solver (Sams How-To).
- This book explains in detail how to tackle a problem with lots of examples and ready pl/sql scripts.
Its a must for devlopers and DBA's
- Don't pass up a chance to find out what you need to know about Oracle in a hurry. This book focuses on NT as specified in the introduction - UNIX gets the minimal treatment it deserves. The authors worked with the Beta release so there are some deviations from the Oracle8 production version but they obviously wanted to get this information to users in a hurry. I found tons of worthwhile tips that are missing from the online docs.
- So many books like this one specialize in nothing more that trying to inflate their page count (and hence their price). I guess it is less expensive to pay for paper than the time/energy/effort to write a meaningful book.
For some reason they waste about 3 to 5 pages before each chapter describing what is in the chapter (what are table of contents and indexes for?) And then when you actually go the "answer", it lists some superficial answer along with an example of how to run a prefab sql script (@ch1_ans.sql)!! The book doesn't disect any of the actual sql code! (you have to download and figure out the code on your own) I wish someone would write a real "how to" book for Oracle that would be a reference of oracle tasks, along with the acutal sql code and explanations to accomplish them!
- I noticed a few comments about the proofreading (or lack of). I didn't have to look far to find errors. There are a lot of screen shots that are misplaced. All of the comments regarding this book being focused on NT are true. This book doesn't pretend to be for the UNIX crowd. For those of us who have to know both, this book has its place. I haven't found any blatent technical misstatements, but I haven't gone too far either. In short, this would have been a four-and-a-half star book if they had spent an extra hour making sure the scrrenshots matched the captions.
- Liked the book since it covered all the topics in a planned manner..by starting to explain what the topic is..explaining the topic by providing scripts..and then concluding with how!

3 comments about High Performance Oracle Database Applications: Performance and Tuning Techniques for Getting the Most from Your Oracle Database.
- I was recently on a site where PowerBuilder reports were running very, very slowly (four hours and more). The SQL looked OK so I created some new, denormalized tables. Then I turned to Burleson's book for tuning Oracle as well as the one from O'Reilly. There was no DBA at this company and the books were a godsend. Burleson's is clear and you can easily pick out the parts that apply to your particular site. By the time I finished the reports ran in five minutes or less and this book was a real aid in getting that done
- I spent hours looking at Oracle book, and this one was the easiest to understand and had the best tuning information. The CD-ROM was especially useful, and it had some tuning queries that allowed me to nearly double the speed of my application.
- We were disappointed that the more sophisticated scripts alluded to in the text (those that would support 'high performance' in the title) were not included on the CD. We thought perhaps the missing scripts would be on the Coriolis web site, but the publisher's web site seems to indicate they no longer support the book. Therefore, this book is evidently obsolete.
