4 comments about Oracle Web Application Server Handbook (Oracle Series).
- If you are using, or thinking about using, Oracle Web Application Server 3.0, buy this book. It sucessfully brings togeter the material you will need to install, configure, maintain and develop applications. This book is obviously written by people with real world experience of using the product, all too often a rarity.
- The book does an adequate job of describing the features of the web server but if you want to dig into developing applications, this book is not the one to choose. Examples are few - and when they do get around to showing code, they don't always show a picture of the screen to show you what's going on. Also - the book continuosly refers you to copies of examples on the CD that is supposedly shipped with the book. However, upon investigation you'll find that the examples aren't on the CD. You will need to go to their website for those. The CD contains a Trial of the Web Server product and the documentation that already comes with it (I'll admit that the book is better than the documentation that comes with the webserver though). Another problem with the book is that, when describing the htp package procedures, they've pretty much said the same thing as the documentation that comes with the web server. Some better information could have been added - for example: It would be nice to know what kind of error handling the owa_util.todate function does if I send it a date like 31-FEB-99. Instead, all the book says is this: "Converts the owa_util.dateType to the standard Oracle database DATE Type". A rookie like me needs a bit more info. I alswo would have liked to have seen more information and examples on how to process Transactions. This is a pretty important function I would think for many programmers developing apps for the web - but in all the 684 pages this book has, the author spends only 4 pages discussing how to handle it using PL/SQL. All in all, I wouldn't recommend the book unless you're just looking for a cursory overview.
- THIS BOOK DOESN'T CLEARLY COVER THE SYNTAX FOR HTP AND HTF COMMANDS
- OAS 4.0 has changed quite a bit, so it's difficult to map the old language (agents, DCDs) to new language such as applications and cartridges. There is a frustrating lack of detail if you're new to 8i as well. This is exacerbated by the use of independent examples on every page. Rather than using consistent sample data, each example starts with completely new schema, table, variables, etc. There is a definite laundry list of requirements to installing and getting a successful test of OAS to a remote database, and you'd never know it to read this book. I used the online doc to discover most of what I needed to know.

5 comments about Personal Oracle8 Explorer.
- I'm having all kinds of difficulty installing "Personal Oracle8" (one of your books).
The instructions in the book for doing the install say simply to insert the CD and a menu will pop up leading me through the installation process. That is not what happens at all. In fact the chapter on installation is completly different from what I'm experiencing. On the cover of the CD itself, it says to execute the "Install.exe", which I did. I did get a bunch of things installed on the computer, but none are useful at the moment. I don't have a windows group for Personal Oracle8. I do have something like 15 different setup*.exe files located in different folders. Am I supposed to run each one individually? I tried running the setup.exe that is located in the ...\SQLStation\Station folder but it asks for The License Agreement for SQL-Station First Edition (found on the SoftWare License Agreement included with the distribution media). I have no idea where to find this. Why isn't the installation process running the way that the book describes. Please advise me on what I'm doing wrong. I doesn't seem like the Personal Oracle8 software that comes with the book matches the book. Thanks. Graham graham.o'connor@pwgsc.gc.ca
- Very well written book. Though you have to have some beginning-level knowledge of Personal Oracle8 before you pick up this book. Some chapters are summarized because of the advanced nature of topic. However, they would make more sense if they might have been summarized more in general term, e.g., NCA chapter. In summary, this is an excellent source to learn Personal Oracle8 and then move to Enterprise Oracle.
- I bought this book from amazon.com (about 2 months ago) and have read it cover to cover except the DBA chapters 16 & 17. I found the book an excellent starting point for someone like myself with PC and web publishing skills with database knowledge. I now use it for refresher explanation and reference.
I appreciated all of the solid and complete examples and coverage of the fundamentals of Oracle RDBMS and SQL. I got the feeling from reading this book that the author wanted to give the reader a solid understanding of Oracle RDBMS / SQL and not let them just get by like so many other books. This is further confirmed by NOT discussing Dev2000. Chapter four did leave me dazed, normalization is so normal, but so difficult to elaborate on. Finally, A suggestion for those having trouble with the CD-ROM. I wouldn't buy any book for it's free software. Most of the time it's dated and there is NO reason to with Oracle. For $5.00 Oracle will give just about EVERY PROGRAM YOU NEED! Check out the "Try & Buy" page at oracle.com. In fact I manually went through every SQL example in this book and never broke the seal on the CD (I used Personal Oracle8 from Oracle for $5). PS You need (to buy) another book for PL/SQL
- I'm not going to pan this book. It's actually pretty good. Unfortunately it's written for Personal Oracle 8.0.3 for Windows 95. I'm running Personal Oracle 8i 8.1.5 for Windows NT and you'd think it was a completely different product. The author spends alot of time discussing a component that doesn't even exist in version 8.1.5: the Oracle8 Navigator. Still, once you overcome installation issues the book has some useful information.
- this book is poorly written. for example:
1. in ch. 1, the author talks about start database without mention what database you are actually starting or what 'start database' means. 2. in ch.2, you suppose to create a new database, but all you see from the author is how to create a project under personal oracle 8 what is the difference between a database and project! nothing is said. 3.what is that local database? the author's writting is so confusing. 4. the author misled the reader to think the cd accompany the book has peronal oracle on it. IT DOES NOT! the cd of the book only contains junks! this list can go on and on and on! don't waste your money!
