1 comments about Database Performance Tuning and Optimization: Using Oracle.
  1. I didn't really order this book expecting a practitioner's guide to Oracle. It's written by a respected and widely published academician and I was looking forward to a melding of theory and practise. All I found was a book full of filler (lots of queries and printouts when summaries would have done) that is way out of date. For a performance book published in 2003 to not even mention Statspack (while devoting a chapter to bstat/estat) tells me that the author stopped working on Oracle at 8.0 and has not caught up. I have to admit that I cannot write a thorough, page by page review of this book because it is packed up for return to Amazon (a first for me). But to give you a couple of examples of the shallow treatment of the subject in this book: the index does not list the term histogram (poor editing) and the section devoted to it does not even mention that there are problems getting the optimizer to make full use of histograms when bind variables are used (though researchers have shown that histograms are not fully ignored when using binds as has been published many times). The section on partitioning doesn't go into the advantages and drawbacks of global vs. local indexes on partitions and doesn't in fact go into any substantive treatment of partitioning options at all. This book is over-priced and under-powered. I gave it two stars instead of one simply because someone who is a student trying to transition from pure theory into practise may find the reasurring presences of familiar terminology and formatting helpful. There is some material on the mathematical foundation of the relational model that could also be helpful to the student and practitioner in the field. But if you are looking for real performance books you would be far better off looking at those from authors of the Oak Table (search for Oak Table on Google to find this), such as Tom Kyte and Jonathan Lewis.

1 comments about Oracle8i and Microsoft SQL Server Integration (With CD-ROM).
  1. This book examines the most recent verions of Oracle 8i and sql server and compares one with the other in a non-biased way. Features of both are examined and explained. Microsoft has engineered Sql server with a particular strategy in mind argues the author. This strategy is integration with all the other Microsoft products. Oracle in contrast has the strategy of integrating everything into its core database product. The most useful information in this book are the descriptions of the integration tools to move database schema info and data between the two environments. Sql server has something called DTS, while Oracle has the Oracle migration workbench. However, there are several other tools some of which use OLE DB and ODBC which all support movement of data and sometimes schema information. The author doesn't try to judge which database is better or more open. The information about connectivity between these databases is presented objectively. Anybody that operates in an environment of sql server and Oracle will benefit from this face off between the latest versions of these databases.

  1. Holtz does a pretty good job with touching on all the areas of Computer Consulting from the home or as an independent. My only complaint is that the author does not spend enough time with things like: creating proposals (an example or two would have been nice), fee structures (how to set your fee competatively), overhead calculation (only touches on this). A good starting place, but more in-depth books are needed to make a successful go of it. Do not depend on just this book.

5 comments about Developing Personal Oracle 7 for Windows 95 Applications.
  1. This has to be the worst book i have ever used. Besides the numerous mistakes and typo's each subject is covered so breifly that u might as well guess as to what to do. The books title is very misleading also. It says 'for windows 95' when a good part of the book is geared towards 3.11. I think that the only good use for this book would be to replace a broken leg on a couch.

  2. I've been learning great thing from this book. Starts from basic to complex, explains everything a new person to Oracle wants to know.

  3. If all you are interested in doing is learning Personal Oracle basics and SQL, THEN THIS IS THE BOOK! But if you already know SQL, then don't waste your money. When I needed this book, I was trying to automate Oracle with Visual Basic and it did not help at all.

  4. This is a great book! I was former Webmaster and lead CGI programmer at a fortune 500 company and currently am development manager on a team writing and developing Oracle Web applications. This book is the most used Oracle book I own! I must have over a dozen Oracle books and this book rules! It is not advanced but 98% of the time I am able to get the information I need for what I am trying to do. The writer is a good teacher and one could use this to learn and become very proficient in the use of Oracle from a developemnt standpoint. Other critics here have said it is too basic and I agree it is basic but not too basic to be very useful. I heartily recommend this book to anyone learning Oracle or who needs a one volume easy to use reference for Oracle.

  5. best book for oracle related person

4 comments about The Day the Phones Stopped Ringing.
  1. This book is filled with true stories of the deadly and costly consequences of computer systems gone haywire. It is not technical and does not contain alot of techo-babble. Instead it deals with subjects such as surgical procedures gone wrong, airplane crashes, military mistakes, cases of mistaken identity and more...all caused by the misuse of computers or the misguded ideas of humans who use them. The author is a TV news reporter who presents this like an investigative reporter. However, he offers solutions and expert opinions on how to prevent each of these diasters from happening again. The question is: Is anybody listening ?

  2. This book should be reprinted. With the upcoming Y2K bug as well as other incidents of software creating problems for people's lives, this book is necessary reading. It contains actual real life information about the extent of the problem and how a society that relies on computers as much as ours does is vunerable.

  3. I wrote this for the other entry at Amazon.com with the same title, same author, different subtitle. This book should be reprinted. With the upcoming Y2K bug as well as other incidents of software creating problems for people's lives, this book is necessary reading. It contains actual real life information about the extent of the problem and how a society that relies on computers as much as ours does is vunerable.

  4. I like reading real-life experiences used to illustrate a technical point rather than a dry dissertation. Like 1 of the other reviewers - I feel that this title should be reprinted but it should be updated and revised in light of changes in the software/hardware/systems world since the time it was published. AND it needs to have both an index and pointers to sources (i.e. footnotes, bibliography, etc.) The lack of the latter 2 items diminished the usefulness of the book for me as I could not follow up/get more in-depth information and I could not easily find a particular fact or passage I wanted to find in the book.
