2 comments about Mastering Oracle 7 & Client/Server Computing.
  1. Material is a dated by the pace of Oracle releases. I have not reviewed the new edition (June 1996).

  2. I finished reading on this book in September 1996. As a developer, system analyst and team leader among various Oracle projects since 1990, this is the best Oracle book I ever read. It is very easy to understand but deep enough to give you a clear concept about how Oracle 7 fits for Client/Server applications. I bought another Oracle book written by the same author, Oracle 8 Architecture, in December 1997. I have been waiting for the third edition, something like 'Mastering Oracle 8 & Client/Server Computing (and/or Data Warehousing) in the near future', written by the same author. Please !

4 comments about Computer Wars:: The Fall of IBM and the Future of Global Technology.
  1. This book details how the modern computer industry came into being. Who the players were, how they fought for domiance, who won, who lost, and why. The authors cleary delineate the pivotal points that shape today's competitive landscape. For instance when Intel and Microsoft stole the day from IBM.For anyone even casually interested in the computer industry, this is a fasinating and easy read

  2. This book was in interesting book that went into the details. It clearly explaines the details of how IBM lost the war with the best technology in the world.

  3. This is a book book, if you like the subject. The first 1/3 tells the story of the collapse of IBM, and the rest of the book goes into the buissness aspects of what went wrong and what to do in the future. Great if you like either buissness or computers in general.

  4. Computer Wars remains the single best book for understanding the computer industry, both software and hardware. When people outside the industry ask why both Netscape and Microsoft have decided to lose a barrel of money by developing WWW browsers and giving them away, give them a copy of this book.

2 comments about Behind the Silicon Curtain: The Seductions of Work in A Lonely Era.
  1. Dennis Hayes highlights the micro-activity that is present within Silicon Valley which has proved to be the dominant economic model for regional economic development throughout the world. He exposes the inner world of the workers experience through the 'clean rooms' to the wider pollution around the Santa Clara Valley area. The mobility of work and its mundane nature are complimented with the experiences of the programmers who cannot escape the procedural nature of work. With assembly work being sourced abroad and the influx of foreign investment and intellectual capital Hayes book shines a bright intellectual torch to expose the dark inner workings of an area that is held up as the pantheon of all that is great in America. No place on the world symbolises 'progress' like Silicon Valley and after working there for several years and writing for a local newspaper Hayes has crafted an expose of the micro-culture where shopping, drugs and addiction are seemingly par for the course. An excellent book for those interested in this area.

  2. This book is a worthy read for anyone working and living in Silicon Valley. You won't see anything about the booming Web economy because Hayes published before the advent of the Web. Nevertheless, his book accurately describes what I see around me today, working in a "Top 100 corporations to work for": modularity of projects without any coherent vision, a taboo on discussing projects or salaries, an overwhelming reliance on contract workers (who get no, nada, none of our perks), universal loneliness as we all toil away at our machines, and the frightening intensity with which Silicon Valley inhabitants approach shopping, fitness, and drugs. And. . . a resounding lack of any kind of political community. Dennis, write another book--we need you, updated!

  1. Scan the book, and look for another detailed book on Oracle Personal 8.0. This is the strategy you have to use when you have finished Mr Ramalho's book. The book starts with a lot of anticipations, but the topics are discussed very briefly with ill-defined technical stuff and illustrations. It will give you some beginning skills, definately not intermediate knowledge of Oracle 8.

  2. The book is a well balanced text that covers the basics of the Personal Oracle 8 and the Power Objects tool. The subjects are introduced in a logical order of dificulty. With lots of screen shots the reading is very easy, even without a nearby computer.
