2 comments about Oracle SQL and Introductory PL/SQL.
- I actually had the good fortune of having the author of this book as a professor for my SQL class. She was one of the few professors I actually learned something from. I use SQL on a daily basis, and this is the book I originally learned it from.
The computer labs were already set up in such a way that we were able to dive right into this book. It is a great tool for a lab environment with a professor on had, but may not be the best choice for a individual student hoping to study on their own, in the privacy of their home.
- I also had Linda as a professor in college. I loved her classes, including the one she wrote this book for. Since then, I have worked in a DB job for 4 years, and keep this book at my desk and pull it out as a great reference. Highly recommended.

5 comments about Inside Oracle Designer/2000 (Oracle Press Series).
- As a seasoned Oracle developer I found this book filled with errors and reader assumptions. I would not recommend this book for a mid-level to upper-level application designer let alone a beginner. This book will turn you off using Designer/2000 for the great modeler it is.
- It's the worst book I have ever seen. Think about how you could get from the book and not about how many pages it have.
- this book is completely abstract and full of jargon, pompuous and empty. Waste of money!
- This is very Huge book a lot of pounds but too little information. Did you ever read Oracle Documentation about Des 2K? Yes? You have already red this book. I recomend 2 new book within Oracle series (Des 2K Handbook and Des2k Generator) it is much better.
- The book gives the Top down approach, with excellebt diagrams to explain the process of designer 2000.

5 comments about Teach Yourself Oracle8 in 21 Days (Sams Teach Yourself).
- This book is a superficial overview of the Oracle 8.0.4 database. It is a disjointed overview of it's features. It just skips lightly from subject to subject in a seemingly ramdom order. The first 3 chapters are good, it goes quickly downhill after that. It's more appropriate for a management overview rather than for showing someone new to Oracle how to install and configure the product.
- Unlike other "21 days" texts, this book is not a tutorial that you can follow in front of your terminal or workstation. Many of the examples don't work at all. Did anybody at the publisher actually go through the book to see if any of this stuff makes sense? Obviously not. The only thing you'll learn (and in less than 21 days I might add) is that this book is a waste of time and a source of frustration. The book is geared toward Oracle8 on Windows NT 4. If you're running NT 4, skip this book and try "Oracle8 & Windows NT Black Book". Now that's a good book.
- There is a section in this book that claims that Oracle does not write to datafiles that are in hot backup mode. Although this is a common misconception, it is nevertheless false.
- This is one of two books I bought as part of a package 'Oracle JDeveloper Suite Personal Edition 1.1' put out by Oracle/MacMillan Digital Publishing USA. The package comprises two disks : Oracle JDeveloper 1.1/Oracle Application Server 4.0.7/Oracle Enterprise Edition 8.0.5. The books are absolutely useless and I had to find four other books to learn how to install and how to use the package. It is not the normal style of Teach Yourself books where one can learn by matching what is in the book. I am afraid this book puts me off from anymore Teach Yourself books by SAMS.
- This book does nothing more than teaches one how to use the Oracle wizards to create tables, users, etc... If your new to Oracle, you should learn the syntax of the command lines even thought your in a NT environmet.

5 comments about Oracle Essentials : Oracle9i, Oracle8i & Oracle8 (2nd Edition).
- After that You will have good understanding of Oracle basics, but for deeper knowledge You must find other books! Language not to difficult, helpful images.
- I picked this book up to re-aquaint myself with Oracle. As a developer, I typically only dive into SQL-PLUS and data modeling. This book explains everything a developer needs to know about the vast, and I mean VAST feature set of Oracle. Plus this book brought me up to speed on 9i... Such as features in 9i such as Real Application Clusters, a new XML datatype, and the CREATE TABLE... AS SELECT.
This book is perfect for an application developer, an IT manager, or a beginning DBA new to Oracle. This book is worth twice its price!! Kudos to Greenwald, Stern, and Stackowiak.
- Both a great reference and tutorial..... a must for beginners.
- Since I wear the dba hat, developer hat, and all the other hats on this large (2 billion + data points) Oracle database, I need help for infrequent activities, like installing an upgrade (8.0 to 9i), migrating tables that are upwards of 20GB each, and making sure the new server is setup/configured optimally for the data warehouse. Based on the customer reviews, I bought this book. The level of technical help is insufficient in my specific areas of interest. The last book I bought for this was excellent, The Black Book for Oracle8 and Windows NT. And the books I bought from Oracle Press were also excellent. This book was not as helpful. The Oracle DBA Pocket Checklist is helpful, but you will need lots more than this book if you are the infrequent dba. So back to using Oracle Support and Oracle Press....
- This book gives you not only detailed explaination on very facet of Oracle in a plain, easy to understand language but also displays a clear map of how each components related and how they work together. That is, in my opinion, very important to understand Oracle.
The book gives a high-level overview of almost everything. Totally worth the money.

5 comments about Oracle DBA Tips and Techniques.
- Good books should have good binding. Good books that fall apart at the center become worthless books. My SQL developer's guide split in 2 with 20 pages falling out and then one of the halves split in 2 again so I now have 3 pieces of book with 30 or so loose pages.
- A very comprehensive and good quality book. I agree with the previous reviewers that the book is a must-have for Oracle DBAs. I have found coverage on some critical areas of RDBMS management to be very helpful. It has added to my arsenal a lot of new and useful techniques. Also the information about Oracle 8i was helpful for me. I thank Sumit for taking the time to share with us this wealth of knowledge.
- The scripts to accompany the book are not on the web site yet?? Come on Mr Sarin- get a move on.. Bind quality is very very POOR- Content of the book is good.
- Concise chapters, clear and candid presentation makes it easy to read. Ready reference book always in the book shelf at the worksite. Scripts are missing on the web site mentioned in the book. It would be nice to have them. It will be a good investment on the book.
- The content of this book is very much outdated and is very much behind current technology.
This is a waste of money and time.

5 comments about Sams Teach Yourself Oracle8 Database Development in 21 Days (Sams Teach Yourself).
- First, I should state that I have NOT read this book cover-to-cover. I've used it more as a reference. But if you are new to Oracle and Databases of this size, this is a great "just get me started" book. Books on Oracle tend to assume you already have a PhD in `Oracleese', this book does not. It gives you a good overview of all the Oracle products. Do not expect a lot of detail. Examples show you the very basics of `here's how to get a report started" or "here's a very basic pie chart" Which is great since Oracle's Design tools are not intuitive and can be frustrating and intimidating to the new user even if your familiar with other report or graphing tools. This book is great for you if you just want to get your feet wet, with out a lot of frustration, and then play on your own. I do recommend it for the new oracle developer.
- This book help you to know the differents parts of a database. First its cover the Analyst of a project. After that it explains how to create tables, triggers, etc in the database. After that it explains how to make Forms, Reports and Graphics with Developer 2000. Then it explains the Oracle Power objects. It's a great book to integrate all the aknowdlegde that you could have about Oracle. It also contains an exam after each date. This book helps me to undestand what I alwas do some things in the Database
- This book covers the basics of Oracle database and Developer/2000 tools. It is a great textbook since it covers the material in easy to understand format and uses numerous screens to guide the reader through the learning process. As a teacher, I had been searching for years for a book that would properly cover the material for an introductory Oracle course. This book is the best I have found so far, and it amazes me how similar it it to the handouts I had produced myself over the years. The book however does have a couple of flaws (and hence the three star rating). First, contrary to the title, it has very little on Oracle 8. Second, it does not cover SQL*Plus. The other shortcomings are minor if you accept this book as only an introductory book. Regardless, if you are teaching an introductory Oracle course and are looking for an easy to use textbook, this is the book for you (until someone does a better one).
- First, let me say I have not read the book entirely. My observation, as a visual type learner, is I expected the CD to contain all I needed to conduct tutorials. This is not the case. You need some level of an Oracle database on your computer as well as the Developer 2000 software. I think it would be good business for the publisher or Amazon.com comments to advise what you need in order to benefit from the enclosed CD tutorial. Other than that, what I have observed from the book is it is well organized and will be very informative, even without the required software to run the book's CD tutorial.
- "Teach Yourself Oracle8 Database Development in 21 Days" is not a perfect book, but is probably the best general book for beginners. As noted by other reviewers, the book is best used with a working installation of the Oracle 8 database -- something not supplied with the book. The book will give you a good, general understanding of database design, SQL, PL/SQL, Oracle Reports, Forms, and Queries, Graphics, and some basic database administration. While not as in depth as more advanced, more narrowly focused books, this book answered questions (e.g. how to convert Forms and Reports from development to Runtime versions) that I didn't see answered anywhere else. Overall, a must have for the novice Oracle user and a good reference for intermediate users, as well.

4 comments about Bill Gates: The Path to the Future.
- If this book is called The Path to the Future, why does the author spend so much time talking about the past? The book contains boring histories that everyone already knows, plus a lot of filler and no actual insights. Don't waste your time.
- This book is definitely not worth reading. The premise is misleading (it is hardly in-depth), writing is poor (I found numerous typographical errors), all views are strongly biased towards Gates, and none of the author's arguments are supported sufficiently.
- This book is a great book. It is a condensed version of his life... Instead of reading too much into boring details you get the quick fast pace version in a great, easy to read novel. The author has obviously done great research of his subject. Do not listen to these other reviews which are obviously from people who hate Bill Gates. Below you will find my summary and analysis of this book:
Bill Gates is probably one of the smartest and most successful men of our time, maybe of all time. This book is the summary of Bill Gates' path to success and the history of how our society became dependant on computers and of course Microsoft. How did Bill Gates become the richest man ever know? What Challenges did he face? All is revealed about the man behind Microsoft, the company that changed how we live. Bill Gates is a genius that is probably smarter than anyone you will ever know. Here is the story that will show you his inner workings. Interesting combinations of unique personality characteristics that this man has is what has made him the success he is and is explained to you in this story.
