  1. I'm totally new to Oracle, and this book was just what I needed. It led me through every step of installing and configuring Oracle Database, the Oracle Internet Application Server, plus all the tools needed to develop Oracle applications. Then it gave a separate chapter on 5 different methods of writing the applications, including Java, Pl/SQL, Portals, Forms Designer, and Oracle Developer. Everything was clearly laid out, step by step, so that by following the instructions given, I had working examples of all the methods. I especially appreciated chapter 5, Designing an HTML Application, where the author showed an excellent method for designing a web application, starting with storyboards, proceeding to flow diagrams, then writing the code, and then separating the business logic from the presentation code. Using easy to follow examples that lead you from start to finish, the author teaches good programming practices as well as the "how-to's". I'm also used to most books having many errors in them, so you have to troubleshoot to figure out what's supposed to happen. This book was very accurate and complete, and the code actually works. The code examples are also available for download from the website, so you don't have to do a lot of typing. I appreciated the author's clear, easy to understand language. His extensive knowledge of Oracle is evident in the way he made things simple for the beginner. I'll be looking for more books by this author.

  2. I couldn't sing enough praises of this book! To be sure, the "beginner" that this is book is aimed at has some oracle development experience, but little - or as in my case - no web development experience. Having some pl/sql programming background, and wanting now to learn how to write web-enabled interfaces for my oracle apps, i couldn't have asked for a better-designed book.

First of all, it takes you through all the web-related jargon (for instance, the difference between a servlet and a server page), and explains how web and database apps fit in the overall scheme of things. Then it clearly demarcates the different approaches one could take to developing oracle web applications, and then - best of all - develops the same little app using each of those approaches.

Of course, there will be a lot more to learn, but this book will start you off right!

  3. Book is good as a tool for beginners and as a review of technology. It is for those who are in Windows world only. Presumption is that both database and application server are installed on the same PC, which is not always true.

  4. Before I buy this book , I only knew little knowladge for oracle web development. But after read this book , I find this book is perfect for beginer !

  5. I should have rated this 3+ stars, but it doesn't look like Amazon.com is going to let me change the rating.

This book will give you a good intro to Oracle's PL/SQL Web Toolkit as well as the numerous other options that Oracle offers for developing web-based applications. Its examples promote a number of good techniques for segmenting business and presentation logic, but break down a bit when illustrating how application logic should be segmented into procedures.

Use this as a good place to get started, then follow-up with individuals who have built larger scale PL/SQL Web Toolkit applications (via Oracle user groups, OTN, or newgroups) for additional insight on good application architecture. I would also recommend getting a good book on DHTML, CSS, and JavaScript to round out the picture (such as Danny Goodman's Dynamic HTML from O'Reilly).

  1. I finished this book and passed the exam. It's a great book start to finish. And I find my self using it as a reference over all my other Oracle Press 9i books. Wells explains how to complete tasks to get the job done where the other books don't. I highly recommend this book for anyone preparing for the exam or to support their work as an Oracle DBA.

5 comments about Oracle8: The Complete Reference.
  1. ...First of all, this is NOT the book to use if you want to learn Oracle, or SQL. This is NOT the way to get your feet wet in database programming. However, if you are already a database professional, who needs a detailed, COMPREHENSIVE reference of Oracle's many features, functions, and capabilities, this is well worth the asking price. The CD documentation is not all that great, but the book's index is pretty thorough, so I'm willing to forgive that. Remember - this book is designed for the PROFESSIONAL.

  2. It's a good book for all people who want to have a panoramic idea of "what is Oracle", but it's not complete for database administration. For many people who was already a DBA with a good Knowledge of SQL language , the book is more dispersive, and it's not focused on the basics information that a DBA want to know like users administration, backups and so on Finally it is a good book, for all novice people of oracle.

  3. You'll never find everything you want in one volume, but it's mighty handy to have a reference that covers most of the topics you need. This is not a tutorial. However, if you know some SQL and database concepts, this book will get you going on Oracle. There is a very good chapter on DECODE, and functions are covered well. I found the information on system catalogs useful, and I use the alphabetical reference all the time.

  4. This contains most of what you need to know to use Oracle8. It does not flow like a tutorial, but it isn't one (it is a reference). This is one of only a few Oracle books that I felt necessary to buy myself.

  5. This book is huge, at 1344 pages it is huge. But not at all useful. Information is too darn difficult to find, and more often that not it is simply not there. I could not find anything on Dynamic SQL, and very little on SQL Load - something a supposedly 'Complete Reference' of Oracle8 should cover. Also, the absolutely paucity of examples makes it difficult to figure out correct syntactical usage without at least some trial and error. Use one if available at your company or library or if you can borrow a copy - just don't waste money buying one - new or used.

  1. one of the best books which dealing with the reader. very good manual for the developers who prepare for ocp. it covers many useful topics in oracle

  2. A Compelling read filled with valuble insights

  3. Hefty at over 1,000 pages, it is more of a textbook for students rather than for seasoned professionals. It doesn't come with a CD-ROM but it is extremely easy to understand the material without being too simplistic. The companion website contains extremely important installation instructions that should not be overlooked and will save newbies hours of headaches. In addition, this book will help those intending to take the Oracle Certified Application Developer Track Exams.

  4. I bought this in hopes of learning the intricacies of Oracle Forms for a college course that lacked application support. I wasn't disappointed in the material. My only complaint is that the scope of the material didn't go in as much detail as I would of preferred for the Forms and Reports. What I didn't get I found out through trial and error. Still, the content of this book provides enough and the organization is logical.

  5. I bought this book to learn more about FORM 6I. To be honest I am not disappointed. The book is good and has all I need as supplement to the Christopher Allen book. The book has tutorial to give you the ability to practice, a sort of hands on which is pretty good. I got the data needed for the practice on the publisher website easily. The book covers Oracle 8i and Oracle Forms developper 6I. I will recommend this book to people if you are just new to Form 6i.

1 comments about Oracle Data Manipulation, Knowledge Discovery and Reporting Using MS Access.
  1. All things considered, this is a very helpful book. Granted there are a few typographical errors and the analogies are somewhat lost on me, we must remember that Mr Abbasi is writing about using Access and Oracle together, not rewriting Shakespeare. And I may add that it is a very good book on a subject that, to the best of my knowledge, is not covered in Access books.
The book is written identifying key topics in each chapter and is full of illustrations that accompany the text. At the end of each chapter, there is a 'We Did It!' section that recapitulates that the main concepts have been achieved.
I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to explore more on the topic of using Access to integrate and query Oracle tables. I am familiar with Access, but don't know the first thing about Oracle. And if you are in the same situation as me, you should read this book. I often read reviews by people who indicate that they are leading authorities on any particular subject, or they have numerous years experience in a particular subject everything would read such books. If in the event this book is also rated in the same fashion, ask yourself would you believe someone who bought the book because they wanted to learn something, or someone who already knows everything there could possibly be?
