3 comments about Oracle Dba Survival Guide.
- Virtually every time I've turned to this book for answers to specific Oracle questions, it has failed to have any useful answers. It does, however, have useful bits of advice like: "Warning: if you have instances or applications that are crashing, you may have some really serious problems." No kidding! "It is often more important to know where to find the answers than to know the answers themselves." Unfortunately, the answers I've needed have yet to be found in this book.
- All that you would want to know to get started as an Oracle DBA is presented in this book. The author has diverse experience in large, small, development environments, data warehouses, etc. and is able to relate examples to go with his excellent presentation of technical essentials of Database administration. Far from exhaustive coverage, but just right for an introduction.
- If you ever consider working as an Oracle DBA _THIS_ is the book you want to read. It does not give you mutch technical knowledge(you can get taht from the reference books or training courses) but instead it introduces you the basic consepts of database administration on Oracle. A MUST HAVE for a fresh DBA.

4 comments about Oracle PL/SQL CD Bookshelf.
- As a consultant, I depend on having the right answers available when they're needed. This compilation of books gives me an easily portable collection of seven of the best PL/SQL references available. The ebooks are collections of HTML pages, readable with any browser. The included search engine allows you to search through all the books, or a single book at a time (though not a limited subset of books) for keywords or phrases. The included "Oracle PL/SQL Programming Guide to Oracle8i Features" is an excellent book in its own right, with the typical well-written, entertaining, and informative prose that Feurstein fans are enamored with. This package is an incredible value.
- This CD Bookshelf is an excellent resource for PL/SQL and Oracle Database Developers. It contains 7 books which offer valuable information on PL/SQL programming. The collection of books cover basic to advanced PL/SQL programming topics. Beginners and advanced PL/SQL Developers will find this a good reference to add to their library collection. The Oracle PL/SQL Programming, 2nd Edition book on the PL/SQL CD Bookshelf provides indepth information on the fundamentals of PL/SQL. For more advanced developers the Advanced Oracle PL/SQL Programming with Packages is an excellent resource. Other books on the PL/SQL CD Bookshelf are equally useful and valuable. The PL/SQL CD Bookshelf is a great resource kit to have in my collection!
- O'Reilly simply has the best PL/SQL reference library on the market. This collection of 7 books on CD, along with soft-cover book "Guide to Oracle 8i Features" is the PL/SQL reference standard. Having some previous experience with a couple of the books on the CD, particularly with Steve Feuerstein's work, I found the writing to be clear, insightful and very readable. The programming comments and suggestions are right on the mark. What I also enjoyed was the price, which represents a significant savings over the list cost of the individual books in the bookshelf.
When I first started looking at the CD, I wondered how I would best make use of this reference. I tried reading it on my monitor, starting on the first page and continuing on from there, but after awhile I realized that wasn't going to work. I then started playing with the text searching capabilities provided on the CD. What I found is that O'Reilly has done a very nice job of first indexing and then implementing electronic searches. I am now using the CD exclusively as a reference via this search. Although I didn't know it then, I now believe that is the best way to use the reference if you have some prior knowledge of PL/SQL. I now keep the CD at work, consulting it whenever I need to refresh my memory on how best to write PL/SQL. If you have no prior experience with PL/SQL or you don't like reading books on-line, consider just purchasing the soft-cover components of the bookshelf. However, if you are like me and have some experience in the area, this bookshelf is an indispensable part of the Oracle reference library. One last thought. Although the bookshelf is great, I do have a problem with it. The collection is dated. The CD covers PL/SQL through to version 8.0 of the Oracle RDBMS. A soft-cover book, included in the distribution but not on the CD, includes new features provided with Oracle 8i. That leaves a sizable hole in that PL/SQL features introduced with Oracle 9i are not discussed. I suspect that even as I write this Steve Feuerstein et. al. are hard at work filling that void. In the meantime this collection is the best PL/SQL reference for Oracle 8i.
- This a great all-inclusive resource for Oracle SQL developers. Though focusing on 8i and not on the newer 9i, the concepts are still helpful. Suitable for intermediate and advanced developers.

5 comments about Inside Intel: Andrew Grove and the Rise of the World's Most Powerful Chip Company.
- Very nice book about the US semiconductor industry. It gives us a rare look into the world of corporate America. Very interesting, well-written, and non-technical. Anyone with an interest in the entrepreneurship and computer industry would enjoy this book. This book provides many interesting and some uninteresting details about Intel's history.
This book can give an authentic taste both of the history of ingenuity and energy inside Intel. Mr. Jackson did a wonderful job! But there's a little too much on Intel's battles with AMD and not enough on its unique relationship with Microsoft. May be you never believe it, that such a small silicon thing as Intel's microprocessor was a one of the main media to manifest the impotence of the communist regime in the USSR. In fact, I'm sure this technology turned out more dangerous for the Soviet Union than Reagan's Star Wars.
- unlike most books on corporate america or stories about how exceptional american, against all odds, achieved exceptional things, this book did not do the typical left wing liberal spin to curse corporate america or give the same old same old "capitalism is evil" speech. the narratives detailed how a group of americans, in particular Noyce, Moore and Grove, took risk and boldly "go out and do something" (to quote Noyce) which eventually created wealth for himself/herself, for the employees and for many many people around the world (intel's employees and investors locate all over the world). these are people who in Anthony Robbins' definition as people who made positive difference in a lot of peoples' life. great book, extremely motivating. five star.
- This book gives an excellent chronologic sequence of beginning and eventual rise of Intel. It is pager turner from the 1st page. Also, gives a very clear visibility to an outsider of how well and menacingly Intel built its empire and business. A great book for anyone interested in knowing the history of Intel and semiconductor sector.
- How did Intel become the most powerful company and why did they do so well after deregulation. This is the story that tells how the Pentium chip tried to change the world and sets the stage for how AMD fell behind (until recently). Andy Grove gives great management tips but this remains mostly the story of Intel. Andy Grove has several other books for management strategies. I highly recommend this for those who want to understand how the computer industry arrives at where it is today.
- I learned *alot* in this book. It felt at times like a 'way-back-machine', taking me back to the good-old-days of computers. It is definitely packed with information, and sometimes the cast of characters can be a bit large, but well worth the read! David W.

5 comments about OCP Oracle9i DBA Certification Boxed Set.
- The book set contains all of the necessary subject and has many relevant examples to help in the real test. I have used the set and got my certification very fast. There are some errors but those have no effect on the general content of the book.
- I was too dependent on the books to pass my OCP test and I failed my first test. What I can say is that the book goes into areas not mentioned in the test and the predominant area the test focused on...actual interpretation of SQL code, the text lacked coverage in sufficient detail. Also, if you don't know what iSQL is before the test, I'd suggest you learn what it is and how/when to use it BEFORE taking the test.
Cheers,
Stephen

5 comments about OCP Building Internet Applications I & II Exam Guide.
- I passed both exams end 2002 using this book and other materials.
It is certainly a good preparation tool for the first exam but it is not enough for the second part. You need 46 correct answers on 60 questions which is one of the highest score needed for an Oracle exam. For at least 15 questions I had during my exams, the answer could not be found in this book. For some points of the exam Test Content Checklist which can be found on the Oracle web site, there is not even a word in this book. My advice : - use this book to have a general understanding of the subject. - do all the exercices of the book, it's really useful if you don't work with Forms everyday. - buy youself a Self Test Software. At least 15 questions I had during my exam were simular to the ones you can find in this preparation tool and there are not in the book. Good luck for your exam
- This book only covers about 2/3 of the material on the exam. It covers those 2/3 pretty well, but if you use nothing else to prepare for the exam, you will be in for a rude surprise when you take the exam.
There are a handful of errors in the practice tests and some poor explanations, but this is a good book as PART of your preparation for this exam.
- This book does not cover the exam topic completely. The second part is nothing. This book could be a good introducing book on Internet application form building, but absolutely not for OCP preparation. This book gave not enough example to build Oracle forms with not clear explanation on important concepts, and usages. Persons get OCP only by this book actually does not learn some of Oracle.
- I agree with most of the guys that to pass the fourth exam (Build Internet Applications II) you need to prepare more than that is covered by this exam guide. For example it didn't mention a single word about Oracle Report but it did appear in the fourth exam. Even for those part that IS mentioned in this guide, you need to take extra care about the property palette details to pass the exam. Also I'd like to say this book is a bit hard to read, though it did help me to pass my third exam.
Good luck for your exam!
- The author did a pretty good job in writing this book. I believe since the book was published Oracle Corporation updated the exam objectives which makes the book not very useful for the exam. The reason I gave 4 stars to the book is it is not the author's fault if the exam objectives were updated. But the author did cover a lot of grounds even though it is not complete. He managed to explain in a few pages the huge exam objectives. He wrote his book according the to published exam objectives avalaible at that time. That is my sense. Just so you know topics like report was not covered in the book. The First part of the book is almost complete but the second is not even closed. Some areas are not covered at all in the book. So just be aware of that.
Having read the book and completed the exercises in the book I thought I was ready. I tried to play with some STS and Transcender demos software on the subject and that is when I become aware that I needed other materials to study for the exams. I supplemented my study with other books and training courses in pdf. I completed my exams with a score (1z0-131 55/60) and (1z0-132 57/60).
Overall the book is well-written. It can be used as a starting point but you would need other materials to supplement your study before taking the exams. I don't regret buying this book. I like it and I am planning to keep it around.
Good Luck...
