3 comments about Kubuntu 7.10 (PC Edition).
  1. I have been a Windows user since version 3.1

That all changed when I finally got tired of:
    1) Error messages that would come up for no apparent reason and with no practical solution
    2) Rebooting for every little upgrade
    3) Getting constant pop-up reminders and reboots behind my back
    4) The Windows way of doing things
    5) Lack of innovation

I've been using Kubuntu 7.10 ever since I've installed it and so far, I'm loving it.

However, making a leap from Windows to Kubuntu is alot like changing religions. You need lots of faith. Your parents and friends are going to be like, "Why would you do THAT?"

Well here's why it's worth making this daring leap of faith:

    1) Linux operating systems and software are often free (money-wise) and free to tinker with and modify.
    2) Kubuntu has a nice desktop that is not too different from a Windows desktop.
    3) Most Windows files will run in Kubuntu (Excel, Word, MP3, WMA, Mozilla, etc.)
    4) And finally, CUSTOMIZATION. Instead of one boring desktop, you can install Compiz Fusion and get a cube desktop or E17 for a more practical one. There are more, but those are the two I prefer.

And all those complaints I had about Windows, are practically nonexistent in Kubuntu. I don't have to reboot. I seldom get error messages. And I can customize my computer to my heart's content.

I do have a few recommendations though before you switch:
    1) Run Kubuntu off a Live CD first (to try it out and see if you even like that distribution)
    2) Make sure you have internet access during your install (the ubuntu forums are extremely helpful unlike calling "Professional" tech support and getting some guy from India.
    3) Be patient. I'll admit that Linux takes a while to set up, but once you get things working, you'll love it!

  2. I found that installing Kubuntu 7.10 was not what I expected. I found that the root password had to be set manually and I had a very hard time getting into the system to adjust the various settings like I can with Suse's Yast. Furthermore, I could not set up a DSL connection. I, also, could not set up a root desktop. The boot logger sent me a no-can-do message.

I did not find MySql or PHP on the disk. And, worst of all, I did not find an Apache server there either. These are critical to Web site development and testing on a local computer.

However, Kubuntu is new and going in the right direction. It has a good look and feel with high-quality desktop graphics. It has the basic programs that many need. However, it is definitely not a SuSe 10.3. I have read that Kubuntu 7.10 is for geeks, but the truth is, I did not find that to be so. Yes, I could be called a geek, since I entered my first computer code into a computer that had a 5 kilobyte main and a 5 kilobyte upgrade. That was around 1966. And I have been at it ever since.

My advice is that if one is looking for a low-cost operating system to tinker with, buy this one. If one is looking for something that is open source and basically free, buy Kumbuntu. However, if time is important and one counts time as being valuable, then bite the bullet a go with Microsoft Windows and the appropriate commercial software. I stick to Linux for the same reason one owns a car. It lets me do the driving, But when it breaks down, I also have fix it myself.

  3. I like to try out diverse Operating Systems on my computers like Xandros,Vista,Ubuntu,Linspire. But Kubuntu failed to install.
I finally gave up and had forgotten about it until I got this email, asking me to comment on Kubuntu 7.10...

  1. Corel Gallery 380,000 has very user-friendly search and browse features. Not only does it contain thousands of clipart images, but the sound clips and video clips come in very handy for presentations as well. The 7 CD set is easy to install, and very easy to search/browse. Overall, this is a good product at a great price.

  2. This is the worst collection of images I have ever purchased. First, there is a catalog included with the software, but it only shows thumbnails of sample images - NOT the images included on the software. For example, the catalog lists photos in categories Objects III and Objects VII. However, on the CD's included, the only Objects categories you receive are I, II, and VIII. Of course, the one photo I really needed was in the catalog, but not included on the CD's. This is extremely deceiving.

Also, the CD's contain categories called Portraits of People I-XV. This sounds very promising for finding faces to use in artwork. However, many of the folders for each of these categories only contain 1 or 2 photos and 98% of the photographs are of scantily clad women. This coupled with the other categories, Women Mystique and Lovely Ladies, really made me feel that I was looking at soft porn. Finally, there is no rhyme or reason to their categories. One folder may have 2 photos of women on the beach in bikinis and the 3rd photo is of a 10 year old dressed like a cowgirl. Very frustrating trying to find anything. Do not recommend at all if you are looking for photos. However, if you want partially naked women, in extremely cheesy shots, then this is the collection for you.

5 comments about Linspire Operating System Recovery CD.
  1. I bought this version from another website. I installed on a laptop and the install process was quick. The loading of the actual OS, however takes a little longer than Windows XP. However, you don't have to worry about viruses or spyware or hacks, etc. The system seems secure. The wireless function is amazing!
CNR (Click and Run) is a program that installs software at ease. I have not yet subscribed to their premier CNR where it gives deep discounts on products such as star office and other programs such as Doom 3.
    Overall, I recommend it!

  2. I installed this OS and it booted up very nicely and found my stuff. I am very pleased with how Linspire works...Microsoft's "facts" do not mesh very well with my direct experience.
The gui is very pleasing to the eye and Linspire is as easy as pie to use.
Linspire also has Click And Run,which makes installing and using software a piece of cake.
On the downside,it does boot up rather slowly and sometimes the browser will crash after showing a video. However,I'm confident that these minor problems will be ironed out by the powers that be.
I was going to do a Windows/Linspire duel boot, but after one week of using this OS,I decided that it does everything i want so why do I need Windows?
Using Linspire,I also don't have to worry about the latest virus or spyware and no more never-ending updates to fix yet another hole found in MS's swiss-cheese armor.
So I'm a happy camper now.

  3. Linspire 5.0 is a moderately decent OS. There are some problems with sound that needs to be fixed (mainly when you use Lsongs) It seems a lot of people have had these issues. It is easy to install and CNR makes it easy to find applications. I suggest trying Suse 10.0. It has fewer bugs, just a little more time consuming to install to hard drive. you can buy the retail version with manual and tech support for new users, or download it for free at opensuse.org. I would rank Suse 10.0 over Linspire or Windows

  4. This is probably one of the worst distros available based on the Linux OS kernel. Many of the features, icons, etc. are very 'kid-like' and over-simplified. Not to mention that this distribution has some major issues with graphic drivers. After installation of this software, there is persistent emphasis to join the 'Click-N-Run' community, which is full of a lot of applications which are largely useless. Most of the productive software apps available for Linux are available totally for free on the internet. If you're nothing more than a glorified AOL user, and want something overly simplistic and kid-like, than Linspire might be a great choice. Maybe it's just me but I have a tough time with a company which claims that their software is a perfect alternative to Windows, but absolutely does not support any 'dual-boot' scenarios. Many users of Linux are forced to use both, due to some software which has no Linux functionality whatsoever. Pitching a product as a great alternative and then offering no support is a contradiction. For a more serious user, try SuSE 10.0. It's installation is very well done, their dual-boot works very well, and the documentation provided is excellent. You do not need to buy this product which gives you almost zero support and NO documentation. What exactly are you paying for anyway with Linspire?

  5. Right from the download to the install this OS did everything right! I too have tried diffrent OS's BeOS, Linux Mandrake, Linux Suse Pro 9.3, Linux Red Hat, OS-2, Windows 95,98,ME, & Dos, take your pick! I have found this Linux Linspire to be the best of them all! Its the first version of Linux to see all of my hardware during setup. It's fast And yes it is simple to use! That's the idea behind this version of Linux, is to make it easy for windows user's to move over to Linux. I am sure a lot of Linux power user's would disagree about it being the best, but not everyone wants to play around with the operating system it self. But would rather get some work done, and on a stable system. And as for cost, yes you do pay a litte more with Linspire, for some software than other versions of Luinux, but it's still vastly cheeper than MS Windows software and you still can get free software. If you need a stable version of Linux and you're feedup with Windows and all its crashes, then Linspire is the OS for you!

5 comments about Mac OS 9.1.
  1. If you want to get some work done erase the forty thousand plus OSX files off your hard drive and install OS 9.2.2. There simply is no reason to let the Unix-Aqua-Next hack job hurt your productivity any more. Sure you won't be able to run a few iSofts, but none of them are complete solutions and all are riddled with oversights and nasty user interfaces.

This software works on all Macs currently sold by Apple. Unfortunately Apple is threatening to release Macs that will not run anything below 10.3. That and the huge Apple price premium should be enough to discourage the few remaining Mac loyalists into jumping ship.

  2. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

It is a rip off compared to Panther (10.3)

  3. Although OS X has eclipsed it in terms of reliability and compatability (and largely caught up in speed), OS 9 is still a great choice if you have older hardware and don't need the most recent software. Even though it is based on the original Mac OS that was released in 1984, OS still holds its own compared to Windows. My opinon: if you have at least a 500mHz G3 or any G4, and at least 256MB of RAM, then you will be very happy with OS X (10.2 or above). If not, then 0S 9 is the way to go.

  4. This is an ok operating system now since there is OS X out that took over. If you still have OS 8 you should get this because it is a big jump. If you want to get OS X get 10.2 or 10.3. 10.3 is the latest. If you have a Mac OS 9 you should have 128 Megabytes that is enough for programs and files.

  5. The marketplace company was excellent. I highly recomend ordering from this company.

  1. an excellent intuitive and fully featured product at a realistic price point.I would welcome midi capabilities - this addition would blow the competion away!

  2. Here you have the most complete software for simple and efficient operations of mastering and restoration. A specially handy software if you have a big vinyl album collection to restore: use the great SF plug-ins for this purpose. Very good.

  3. It's easy to install and just as easy to use. Don't be initimidated by the price, particularly if you are serious about audio restoration. Ever wonder how those oldies in monotone would sound in digital stereo? Now you can judge first hand, and don't worry if its not as you expected, the unlimited undo's will allow you to easily go back to a previous configuration. For those most serious about breathing life into that old vinyl collection, buy up to Sonic Foundry's Noise Reduction 2 (four add-ins) that works nicely with the Sound Forge product.
