  1. 1. Slackware doesnt have a graphical interface that can be turned on & off at will. Suse does.

    2. The Linux core operating system is the same across all variants of Linux, including slackware and suse.

    3. The CLI (command line interface) varies across linux variants just as it does across UNIX variants. To suggest that these slight differences would impair anyone familiar with the UNIX CLI from using any variant of linux is incompetent.

  2. 1. All Linux packages should be able to close X to reveal a CLI. However Slackware uses a CLI for nearly everything it does. SuSE has lots of windows type GUI for nearly everything it does. Linux users never really end up learning Linux with SuSE.

    2. The Kernel is what it is called. Slackware actually makes you learn kernel compiling if you want the latest kernel.

    3. Linux commands do not change across linux distros. It is all Linux. The problem is SuSE doesn't teach you any of it because it provides you with all the GUI you could want.

I have used SuSE and think it is great if you want start using Linux but you certainly won't learn Linux. You learn SuSE.

  3. Can it run linux commands? SUSE: yes SLACKWARE: yes
Can a Windows user use it right now? SUSE: yes SLACKWARE: no
Can I buy it and install it from CD? SUSE: yes SLACKWARE: no
Can it run with no GUI? SUSE: yes SLACKWARE: yes

Sub Redhat for Suse in the table & its the same result.
Slackware is just linux without a gui.

To say having a gui somehow prevents learning the os command line is a crock.
Ask anybody that writes win32 Windows scripts all day.
The windows-like display (gui) is open source and appears in other linux flavors like red hat and fedora core. To say u learn only suse is more crock food.

  4. Unlike the four versions of SuSE Linux I've used and liked over the years, the 10.0 release took over my machine as if it were a MS OS. It made the pre-existing XP Home installation unusable. After installing SuSE 10.0, my Win XP OS was history, it was Novell's "SuSE" Linux only. Thanks Novell, I'll never buy what was once a very fine flavor of Linux again.

  5. I installed Linux thousands of times in the late 90's. It was a pain to get the OS working on my system. I gave up for a number of years. I recently installed SUSE Linux 10 and I am amazed at how well the installation went, how user friendly the OS is, and how easy it is to use. I would say if you are interested in trying a good quality Linux system to test the waters, this is where you should start. Maybe buy a book on moving from windows to linux as well.

    4 stars because I don't give 5 stars.

  1. This was a good design studio, and I enjoyed creating screen savers, but I was really expecting more selection. Also, the graphics are occasionally choppy. Other than that, though, I enjoyed creating screen savers from the options I had. I would recommend buying this product, although if you have the Internet, I'd suggest downloading screen savers from there if you can.

  2. I've made three screen savers so far and have enjoyed it tremendously. It's easy with the results being quite acceptable. I, like the other reviewer, do find some fades choppy but I'm able to live with that.

The only other problem I have with it is the use of the "Background". Images can't fade into the next image, they must fade into a background first. You can make the background an image which is a sorta-acceptable workaround but not great as the time a background displays is not adjustable. I like to make screen savers out of photographs, so, for instance, each photograph displays for 10 seconds, then rather than fading into the next photograph, it will fade into the background then into the next photograph. If you make the background one of the photographs, it will only show for a second or two (versus the 10 seconds of the photograph) as the program calls it the Background and not the Image and Background timing is not changable. It would seem to me that an update/patch could be made fixing this...hint, hint.

  3. If you use a modern computer, this program will not work properly because of something called Palette Considerations. The only system this will work on well is one that uses 256 colors and nothing higher. If you try to create a Screen Saver, when it gets to Palette Considerations, the system locks up and quits working. If you're looking for a Screen Saver, keep looking, don't use this.

  1. There is no advantage to paying so much to buy this instead of a Sonic Foundry sound editor(which costs fractions less). My personal opinion would be to pick up a copy of WaveLab. It is sufficient for dealing with common file formats as well as on-the-fly editing of loops/samples for DJ's.

  2. If you buy this product it's because you didn't research anything else. If you want to edit audio final cut can do a better job than sound edit. If you want MIDI than get Performer or emagic logic for between 3 bill and a 1000$.
sound edit is antiquated and has very limited function.

  3. SoundEdit is a great program....Doesn't run with Mac OS X but there's Sound Studio for that system. Macromedia put together a fine recording, editing and production studio when they published this back in the 90's. Costs a lot more $$$ to get some of the features of this program NOW!!

  1. When I ordered this product I expected a lot. What I got was a big disappointment. The hairstyles repear themselves and the accessories are mostly ugly. It also doesn't seem very realistic. A product that I enjoyed much more was the Cosmopolitan Virtual Makeover Deluxe 2. Try it for yourself, I'm pretty sure you'll like it too!

  1. We have been using Kiddix for quite a few months now. This is a very good piece of software for our kids. It is easy to set up and easy for them to use. The developers always appreciate feedback and incorporate suggestions into future versions. My kids especially like the paint program and surfing the web. With all the various idiot-proof filters I know they will be safe when using Kiddix and I know all my data in Windows will be 100% safe too.

  2. I purchased this software because of the reviews and thought my children would enjoy it. Turns out there are some complications if you are downloading on a vista platform. Worked well but was not able to switch back to the vista operating system. The directions for downloading with vista run computers was good but did not work for me. I had to replace computer and am hoping a new version of Kiddix will be out soon.

  3. I have 5 children between the ages of 12 and 3...and each of them like to tinker with the computer. Kiddix enables the youngest ones to enjoy a safe environement that makes sense to them. They know how to boot their computer into Kiddix (Win NT is also installed) log in under their individual IDs, and access the programs that they like. The paint program and the games are most popular with the younger ones. They also like to explore the various parts Kiddix and the Web...and it is good to know that I don't have to look over their shoulders constantly.

It was easy to install, and runs nicely alongside Windows NT. I haven't tried it on a Vista machine.

This is a great product for younger kids (most popular in my house with my 5 year old twins). I hope a pre-teen and adolescent version is in the works.

  4. We love this prodcut for our 5 year old. She has learned a lot about navigating a computer environment and still has access to traditional web-based programs (Nick and Webkinz). I love that the platform creates a safe and secure area for me to monitor and configure while also being able to use the laptop for business purposes without fear of child tampering of the windows platform or important files

  5. I don't have kids, but I have friends and sisters who do, and I'm always the person they call when their kids manage to mess up their machines. Deleted files, infested spyware, useless and memory hogging downloads...kids and these things go together and since i'm "the computer person," it's usually my job to fix what's broken.

I got Kiddix for my most troublesome kid-friend and her frustrated mom, and I haven't been bugged to "debug" their machine since. This makes me very happy.

The install was pretty painless, and my friend set it all up for her daughter pretty quickly.

it would be great if there were a version for 12 year old boys...can't beleive the stuff they "accidentally" download.

  1. I have tried to use this program to translate foreign-language websites, and I cannot make heads or tails of the gobbledygook that it spits back. Here's just an example of a news story translated from Spanish:

"The world Cup Program did yesterday from the PMA, (ONU,) Feeding of the the United Nations Machinery an international call for channelling the assistance with an object initiating the El Salvador that it was ravaged by an earthquake rebuilding back in a week.

The PMA El Salvador director the he became overt the recourse necessity from a Guy Gabreau Canadian saying a motive which they have done international call. To the moment that the earthquake has left I pay up from 701 cadavers and need yourself to rehabilitate the 180.000 person housings.

This sense of Gabreau indicated herself that traducer from a project that that the entity the executive committee is anticipated he begins close from February 1. He added the resources likewise in case of managing with herself that would develop in a six month ones 8 85 period and millions of one 1.600 dollars, millions of pesetas, would require.

The official that leaving marked the seĆsmo last Saturday near means that one million that persons identifying bear from from inside El Salvador from 180.000 they have been located in the rural zones and ones urban borderline.

The PMA has distributed by means of helicopters ones 900 food tons at 200.000 equivalent families means one million dollars (ones 88 millions of pesetas in foods). Also the PMA works with the Nacionla Clerkship and distribute the Family from rations from food for a week in maize consist of a complemented with fishing an and drunk fortificantes for the wives and the boys caddy bean and oils."

That's pretty much the standard for what this software is capable of.

  2. I wish I had read some reviews before buying this product at a local retailer (for more money than I could have bought it here). A significant percentage of the words remain untranslated, and the rest are jumbled together forming no meaningful sentence. Put your money to better use, and don't be fooled by the claims on the box.

  4. [...]

What's specifically wrong with LanguageFarce's Universal Translator? Well, I speak about five languages, so I checked out the prowess of this so-called (sogenannte-Ger, soi-disant-Fr) translator on simple sentences I know in several tongues. I started with a very easy sentence in German: "Ich liebe dich." (I love you.) Our cosmopolitan polyglot here translated it as "I dear you"--I kid you not. And it totally failed to recognize Turkish at all, though it claims to be able to translate it. Only by dividing a Turkish word in a sentence "yurtici" between its root ("yurt"-"country") and its grammatical ending (ici) could I get the translator to acknowledge this might, just might be Turkish. So it can't translate a language that uses suffixes for grammar, as Turkish does.

Moving English into German was equally laughable. I wouldn't depend on this software to order me a ham sandwich, let alone translate a letter into or out of any major language. If you see this CD, steer clear. Unless you like a laugh or two. Rating: worthless.
