2 comments about NetMAX Firewall 2.0.
  1. Netmax Firewall is fine if you are a new network administrator (allowing it to protect you from your own worst enemy: yourself), or if your boss feels better with something in a box that says "Firewall" on it. And it's definitely way too much for home users who don't have a dedicated firewall server.

There's a nice-looking but sometimes confusing web interface that lets you configure NAT (Network Address Translation) with one or more ethernet cards, and configure the firewall too. It can also let you monitor what your LAN users are doing, what websites they are visiting.

But Netmax's simplicity becomes its worst feature as you start to learn more about network administration. In the end, you find out that you could just as easily have used RedHat and ipchains and gained more versatility, and then ftp'd some network monitoring tools if you want to watch how your users are using your net connection.

In the end, Netmax becomes just a "more expensive than RedHat" RedHat distribution.

  2. For beginning Linux users, this firewall lets you make use of Linux ASAP. Because it has the RedHat distribution, there are plenty of useful resources to draw from. As you learn more by digging into the console or xwindows (bypassing the Web interface), you'll find the full powered, multy-usage Linux OS. In other words, this product lets you build, without it becoming obsolete too soon. Having some experience with firewalls on NT, I found the Netmax stuff wasn't too difficult to conquer. Customer support has been good so-far. I'm itching to try the Webserver too! Good product for a Linux newbie. Only drawback: a couple bugs which should not be.

5 comments about Norton Internet Security 2003 Professional Edition.
  1. If you are thinking about buying norton software simply because they are free after rebates, then reconsider it. Although it's well known Symantec makes reliable softwares, When we talk about their rebates, they are liars. Yes, liars ¨Cthey really deserve this. Based on my personal experience, I even think theirs are worse than the notorious I/O Magic's (aka, Hi-Val, Digital research). I bought several Norton softwares during last December, and submitted the upgrade rebates right away with required items, Guess what, until today I got only one of them, and it has been almost 6 months. I guess they are testing my memory but unfortunately I kept a good record of every rebate I submitted. That's what we should do if we are going to buy Symantec softwares with rebates involved, although the best thing I would recommend is to avoid as long as you can.

  2. After I installed this software, I noticed dramatic decrease in Internet speed and reluctance when loading pages. I guess it has to do with it's web filtering options.

The banner blocking is sometimes too intrusive and other times doesn't work at all (you still get some pop-ups).

My biggest disappointed is realizing the Anti-Virus Professional software doesn't install on Windows 2000 Server version. So basiclaly I paid more money to get the professional version of the Virus software but I can't use it because it didn't mention anything in the pruchase section about this sever limitation.

I don't recommend this software at all! I will uninstall it and revert back to Black Ice. It's much faster, effective, and less intrusive. It's unfortunate I can't return this software anymore and wasted my money. The only good think I can think of is pop-up prevention, and this is why I give it one star.

  3. This product is terrible! I've never had a piece of software that not only refused to work out of the box, but actually caused more damage to my system than any virus! I was all excited to install this, due to Norton's reputation for making good products. This is a monsterously invasive program that will take over your computer. Good luck with uninstalling it without formatting your hard drive. I've nver seen such a bad product from what I thought was such a good company.

  4. NIS 2003 has NEVER let me down. Install is very easy as is the rest of the setup. As always, it's helpful to read the manual, which is good. NIS 2003 has blocked and recognized EVERY one of those virus' that have been lurking on the net...you know, the ones you read about on the news. The pop-up blocker works AS advertised. Virus definitions and updates are available instantly. The firewall is second to none as far as I am concerned and very manageable. I feel very confident my system is secure with NIS 2003 is running and I look forward to NIS 2004.

  5. I work with computers for a living, so after "Norton Internet Security 2003 Professional Edition" brought my computer to a grind, I was able to restore it to the pre-installation state. Others may not be so lucky.
First, if you have a router, you don't need Norton firewall, your router is the firewall. To verify for yourself, search for phrase "Symantech security check" in Google and run their program to validate.
Second, if you do need a software firewall, stay away from this product - it will only cause you grief and eventually you'll have to deinstall it to get any work done.
If you still decide to get it, try to get it for free to save on amount of frustration when you start using it.

  1. These are some awesome distros; however, there is really no need to buy linux distros, because they are free. I was just being silly and bought them- no complaints so far.

Furthermore, I am actually multi-booting Windows XP Pro on C:\, Kubuntu is also on C:\ courtesy of the Grub partition utility, and finally regular Ubuntu on D:\ for a total of three optional operating systems.

It is beautiful, I love options and I love learning so when I get bored of one distro I can swith to another or if I get bored of Linux I will just go back to Windows.

  1. This product has "super 3d animations". It says so on the box... and they do include cardboard 3d glasses. If you remember the "3d" movies requiring these, I need say no more. This animation did not work well on film, the limited resolution provided by a computer monitor is even less suited to it.

I could have overlooked this flaw, but the content is insufficient as well. There are 9 subjects covered by the title, ranging from pre-algebra through calculus, yet there is only one CD. This allows for only a brief overview of each subject (including "super 3d animations") - this might be fine for review, but does not justify the claim "ultimate mathematics skill building resource" printed on the box.

All in all, I would recommend against wasting your time with this one.

  2. I found this edition of Studyworks a helpful resource. Coming from a background of only high-school algebra, I wanted to take a physics course that involved calculus. I have been regularly progressing through the levels of mathematics this program offers and I am quite pleased by the careful explanations and, so far, the amount of material included in the software.

Some of the "extra" features are less than awe-inspiring; I wouldn't buy this software just for the "math animations" but there ARE some extra features worth mentioning, such as an extensive math dictionary and a nicely run website to back up the software.

A nice resource for the beginning math student at a fair price.
