3 comments about Slackware 8.1.
- This is the only linux distrobution I use. Known for its stability and as the distrobution that mostly resembles Unix and is true to the LHS and FHS I wont put anything else on my computer. Many people say that slack is hard to learn or that no programs exists for linux, but dont let their misguided statements discourage you, I have been running nothing but slackware for a little over a year now, and have never once needed a program that wasnt available for linux, and I do alot of things with my computer. Also, slackware has one of the nicest and easiest installers of all linux distros. If you have tried the other distros, but feel that something is missing, or you arnt learning as much as you'd like, try slackware. Slackware will not hide the operating system from you, in fact it will put it smack dab in your face. Trust me, with slackware, you will learn linux, and learn it well. You have to, or slackware wont do much. But again, thats a good thing, dont let that discourage you. If you want to learn about computer systems and Unix, then slack is the way to go. Also unlike other distros who have fancy schmancy packagemanagers that often end up breaking your distro, slackware has one of the best no hassel package systems. Its package format is simple source files. there is no dependancy checking, so nothing gets broken. A slack system is a beautiful thing.
- I started with linux by using RedHat... Redhat is a good distor but i kept killing my system. After many installs i learned why. It was the RPM packages. I then used Slackware. Contrary to its name, to get this working there is NO slacking. It invloves learning, and time. Its both a good hobby distro and a good one to use to learn the perticulars for *NIX operating systems. Best of all there are NO pacages everything is packaged in tar or gzip files. All are source. This allows you to customize everything, if you wish. A great distro, it deserves more praise then it typically gets.
- Slackware 8.1 is a well respected i386 oriented distribution of Linux; however, as of May 2003, Slackware 9.0 was released and 9.1 is under development. There may be more current releases by the time you read this.

5 comments about SuSE StarOffice 6.0 (Jewel Case).
- Another solid product from SuSE!! If you own the SuSE 8.0 Distro then this is a no brainer. You get a powerful Office Suite for so little money and its simply the best!!
- I do not know what others experienced, but running this patch CD ruined my linux experience. (1) SuSE linux 8.0 still does not recognize my PCMCIA cards, (2) when running StarOffice 6.0 I got error messages: "/opt/staroffice6.0/work does not exist" and fatal errors when trying to load MS Office files from my windows/c partition--SO 5.2 did it flawlessly, by the way--and when trying to create new files the templates could not be found anywhere.
In other words--this particular distribution of StarOffice 6.0 did not appear to load/install properly and does not appear to function even adequately. Some of you linux wizards might say, "Well, just tweak, tweak, tweak." Fine. If you have the time. And why should one have to, anyway? It should install and work properly. Period. I am still willing to give the "standard" SO 6.0 distribution a try. But I wish I had saved the money this time around.
- You can't argue with the price, which is much less than the StarOffice package from Sun. Go with this or openoffice.org for your Bill-Gates-Free office desktop suite.
The online help is overall pretty bad, but of course that's par for the course. I downloaded the Sun manuals but they were prety much the same or technical only so I got the StarOffice Companion and really like it. It saved me a lot of time and I found some good graphical stuff I can use. There are some patches you might need, so check Sun's patch site. Get it!

- Would not install with SuSE Linux 8.2. The auto installation error message said to check that you have the correct CD. It may have been looking for a patch from the Sun internet site but I am not online with my SeSE Linux 8.2 yet and therefore could not get a patch. I talked to SuSe support and they could not comment on the product. I talked with Sun and was advised to get Star Office 7.0. The cd case said it was for SuSe Linux 8.0 but nowhere does the Amazon offer say that.
