  1. Well I have read this book and I hardly even learned something, because it didn't explain very well. Example: It talked a little about a script, then it showed the html for it...not enough explanation...I didn't learn even one thing...I strongly encourage you not to buy this book.

  2. The book is simply written poorly. There does not seem to be enough explanations for the scripts. The examples in the book and on the CD feature the problematic "program snippets" that are of no real value to an actual project. The level of reading in this book suggests that the reader really has a grasp on Javascript. In addition, this book deals with Netscape-comaptible Javascript. There are better books for the money.

  3. This book fails to deliver as a reference and teaching aid. I found the examples to be lacking in details and ad hoc. The book does not cover DHTML throughly, and most of the information can be found on websites. It tries to do too much. The only redeeming value of the book seems to be the list of online indexes and references that are found in the introduction. For web developers, I would recommend the Core series or the O'Reilly Javascript and Dynamic Html: A definite guide. The information contained is much more complete.

  1. This book was my first introduction to general scripting on the web as well as Javascript in particular. I found it hard to learn from specifically because much of the text is filled with long pages of code that are redundant. The code is redundant mainly because the included cdrom already contains the html sourcecode.

However, the book is my best resource for Javascript when I want to find syntax or forget the purpose / implementation of a method or object. It's the best reference for Javascript that I have, and I have used it regularly for over a year.

This book is ideal for people who are already familiar with scripting (such as VBscript) and need to learn / use Javascript specifically.

  2. This is a boggling book for the beginner...

From the first page, it bombards the reader with a stream of terms and jargon, and only a vague explanation of what it all means, and how it fits into writing code. i.e: "The for...in statement is a special form of loop that loops through the properties of a particular object from first to last." Until that point, I never heard of a loop, so I certainly harbor minimal interest in learning about "special kinds" of loops. And what does it do with the properties while it loops through them?

I like books that start you off quickly, but this just puts you in a cannon and fires you into the fray without any help whatsoever. It's structured more like a mystery novel than a reference guide. Don't let the cute froggies all over the place fool you -- Avoid this book, unless you already have good programming background.

  3. Definitely not for ANYONE. This book is the definition of redundancy. Repetitive examples, pages of unncessary code and TOO MANY SCREENSHOTS! Not only that, but even though it says "examples for UNIX, Win95 and Macintosh" the screenshots are 99% Macintosh. What gives?

The information in this book is slightly useful *if you know what you are looking for*. Even so, it is hard to find anything in this hefty tome that can't be found in a scripting tutorial. I expected more from the company that co-developed this language with Netscape.

  4. It is very user-friendly to read.
    Extremely correct.
The SunSoft Press / Java Series !
    The pace is middle/low.
    Simply surprising good !!!

  5. This is my textbook. but i don't like it very much. i am the beginner of the JavaScript, this book even doesn't help me at all. there are a lot of things had not talked about it before it pop up, it just suddenly appear before your eyes. I always get lost because of that.

  1. Very good book as in introduction to JavaScript. Clear and concise descriptions and examples, that actually work! This isn't a good book for the experienced programmer looking for a desk reference (though it's not too bad in that regards), but is a great book for someone wanting to get started with JavaScript.

  2. Ford begins with useful code samples to illustrate the basic grammar and syntax of JavaScript. In the second half of the book he provides an interesting introduction to programming techniques that could be adopted for use in any language. I teach a JavaScript course and this will be the text.

  3. This is a neat book. First, it is one of the best intros with useful examples. Part way through, Mr. Ford starts to show us 'Intelligent' apps like simple rule-based expert systems, search, and problem-solving. You can start the book knowing nothing about JS, and end up doing some quite sophisticated programming when you finish the book.

I looked at 10-15 books, and bought this one... it works! LISP and Prolog hackers take a look!

  4. I read this awhile ago and am just going through a bunch of old books I have around still that I read and reviewing them :) This was I believe my very first 'programming' book I ever read and it brings back fond memories. This book will teach you things like what a variable is and a function...basic stuff but years later it is still helpful! I'd highly recommend it as javaScript hasn't even changed that much since this book was published I even reread it.

5 comments about HTML & JavaScript for Visual Learners.
  1. I've been a college instructor over thirty years! Subject matter, computer software. Believe I've seen just about every possible instructional manual ever published. These "Visibooks" are the best, with out a doubt! With these manuals there's no way a student wanting to learn can't achieve his/her (her/his) goals. I find the writings are to the point, no reading and re-reading trying to understand what to do next.

  2. So often you have to wade through reams of prose to find the information you need. "HTML & JavaScript for Visual Learners" is a clear, concise, and fully undertandable way to build a Web site without resorting to third party tools (which always add their own code anyway). Each lesson helps the learner build on previously learned material, and multi-paged interactive Web sites are built step-by-step. It's also an excellent just-in-time learning tool when your memory needs help! A gem for the novice! I highly recommend this book.

  3. This book does not conform W3C HTML4.0 or XHTML1.0 specifications. So, the introduced instructions are O.K. for today, but will become obsolete in the future. Although, this time span also depends on browser producers to some extend. Therefore, if you are a beginner's beginner who is only interested to build your own modest personal web page by writing your own HTML code, then this may be your book. On the other hand, if you are planning to learn HTML and beyond, then this book will give you bad coding habit, for starter. The subjects are covered with lots and lots of drawings, pictures, windows, etc. rather than written instructions for every step. If you are planning to use plain text processor for learning how to code your own web pages, in hurry and without too much theoretical hassle, this book may help you out. On the other hand, the title should not mislead you. There are only three copy and paste Javascript examples in this book. Do not expect anything like introduction to javascripting with the help of this book.

  4. What a great book! I think of myself as a visual learner, and I appreciate all the illustrations that show what to do. When I look at the page, I see what I need to do, then I can practice it. The book makes things simple without making me feel like a "dummy". I will definitely check out more of their books.

  5. Not only am I a visual learner but I learn by doing. This book makes it so easy to jump in and start with its practical graphically oriented step by step lessons. To drive the lessons home each chapter ends with practice exercises and each subsequent chapter builds on previous learning. In addition, the book includes a summary HTML Tag Chart for that allows for quick reference. Teaching yourself a new skill can be daunting especially when learning a new computer program from a complicated manual. This is a great book for beginners making learning easy with out the challenge of having to decipher the instructions themselves.

  1. This is almost exactly page for page what is in the PDF you can download for free from the Adobe site. It's quite technical and does not provide much leeway for the begining javascript user... But then again there is not a whole lot of other documentation for scripting in Illustrator, so it's at least as informative as anything else out here, however, it's still not worth the price when you can download it for free from Adobe.

  1. I read many many book so far this one must the worst one. The author must be out of his mind when writing this stupid book. Not worth 1 penny.

  2. I have had a chance to use this book for a Vis. Javascript resource and have found it generally informative and well organized. It definitely shows advantages over many of the books on the same topic in terms of organization and readiblity.

  1. I am very impressed with this book. I think the author did a great job on it. His secure site idea is a great one and helps to keep myself updated with the JS technology. I have cut and pasted lots of his code from the CD (the CD has over 100s of code as the author promises). The book does not talk about other technologies and explain JS syntax and examples in a very easy to understand manner. A must buy!!!

  2. There are so many books on JS today: its like trying to purchase the right shoe for all occasions. I know its hard, but I got lucky. The reason is that, I went to Reaz's lecture at the InternetWorld conference and convinced myself that I should get his book.

Just as he did a great job on this talk at the show, Reaz did an even excellent job with this book. I have to agree that I made a great choice. I learned all the practical information needed for my internet development project. I am pleased with the presentation of the book and I suggest that you spend your bucks in the right basket by purchasing this.

  3. My name is Mike Smalley. I am a 14 year old high school student from Bensalem High School in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. I have had some experience with HTML. I found this book to be an easy read. Having attended an HTML programming course in my neighborhood, I wanted to find out more about web development and possibly start a business. This book is great for someone who is Intermediate to Advanced in HTML, and is a superb reference for an aspiring web developer. Hats off to Reaz Hoque for a job well done!

  4. Good book for getting started. Very easy to follow. Impatient readers will like this book > like i did.

  5. I bought this book about a year and a half ago and have started and re-started reading it 4 or 5 times. Each time, I quit reading due to frustration. I was hoping to teach myself JavaScript, but could not do it with this book. It is not clearly written and it contains numerous errors. Finally, I bought another book and have learned more in 2 weeks than I have in almost 2 years with this book! The only saving grace of this book is the CD that comes with it. There are plenty of sample scripts and programs that can be copied into your own HTML code. However, I found that these also contain errors as well!
