5 comments about JavaScript + CSS + DOM Magic.
- This book is about *applying* CSS and Javascript and shows practical examples.
Chapters 1 and 2 alone are worth the price of the book. The first chapter takes one page and shows how to apply CSS to it. The second chapter is a must for web developers who use tables and are wanting to take advantage of CSS to simplify their work. Netscape 4.x problems with CSS are not ignored but are noted so the webdeveloper is aware of the pitfall. I can't comment on the CD because I type the examples as I go instead of using files from CDs included with any book.
- A project based book, up to the usual standards from the Magic series, but with a slight misleading title. You will find some good real world advice and tips on CSS, intermediate level, pratical JavaScript (really sophisticated JavaScript is pretty rare everywhere) but only some marginal coverage of the DOM
- I just finished Goodman's Javascript Bible 4th ed and am about to emabark on the DHMTL book he wrote. I was looking for some design projects to help put things in context--and give me some ideas of what CSS, Javascript, DHTML, and W3C DOM is capable of doing.
This book is it. I recommend this book if you are interested in putting the pieces together; HOWEVER, I caution that there are A LOT of errors in this book. If you follow along typing in the javascript examples you will find disparate names for functions--between where you initially type them in and where they are eventually called. The same thing happens with variable names, and Itoh sometimes uses capitals in two word + variable names, and sometimes doesn't, which is kind of irritating--and leads to more errors. These things combined can make for some serious clean-up headaches when you go to view the pages. The book is still worth picking up, especially if you're looking to make webpages that sing. Just make sure you're familiar with Javascript--otherwise you'll be frustrated.
- ý`People who give this book 1 star ratings because it's not a beginner's book are missing the point. I picked this up because it fills a gaping gap between the Dummies or Teach Yourself in 24 Hours types of books, and the doorstop reference tomes. Like other Magic series books, this is entirely project oriented. While following each project I picked up a bunch of useful tips to get us working stiff web designers over the roadblocks that can prevent us from using CSS or JavaScript effectively. It'sý`ý` clear that the author has actually spent time working on real websites, and is not just a theoretician. I have already benefitted from the techniques and hints in the book in my paying projects.
I also appreciated the non-preachy tone: I know that I should be using CSS and XHTML and trying to wean myself away from tables, but there aren't that many books out there that actually show you how to do that without hitting me over the head with the "You Must Follow Standards" hammer. Theý`ý` clean, non-fussy designs appeal too. My favorite sections are the CSS section (Part 1) and the last section, which shows what a little imagination using JavaScript, CSS and browsers that support the W3C-DOM specs can produce.
- I bought this book due to the high reviews already here and if I were to rate the book on content alone the rating would be much higher, but...
I am having a very hard time reading the book. The layout of the book is very disturbing to me. It seems like an attempt to lay out the pages using a web-style layout. I really want to slam the book shut and toss it out, but I also really want the information contained within. I'm forcing myself to read faster and faster just to get to the end so I'm done.

5 comments about Mastering JavaScript and JScript.
- I bought Mastering Javascript and Jscript as a supplement to another book Javascript Goodies. I wanted a good, comprehensive reference. The same day I got Mastering Javasript and Jscript, however, I also wanted to send it back. Wish I had. It's an absolutely useless book. You go to look something up, and all it does is give you a table of items with what you're looking up included in the table. It never tells you what the item is or how to use it--basically all it does is confirm that the item is there in the overall javascript or jscript spec. So, I have to go back to the first book to find this out, or go out onto the internet. The last thing I checked was using jscript to connect to a database via Asp technology. It doesn't even give you a hint. It covers this important subject with just one short paragraph. In it, it tells you to go to a different chapter covering a different technology, LiveWire. It says that the operation to accomplish this is essentially the same as with Livewire, "only the object names, methods and syntax are changed". So it's the same but it's completely different. A person would have to plod through all the information on LiveWire to find this particular info; basically, he'd have to learn LiveWire just to do a simple thing like connect up a database via asp. After all his/her effort, moreover, he'd still have no guarantee that he'd be able to accomplish what he wants because LiveWire and asp are different, so he'd have to rely on guesswork. Or, he'd have to do like I'm doing, look out onto the internet.
No information whatsoever was given on how to do this probably simple thing using asp. That's typical of this book--all it ever does is confirm that something is there. (Want to know about document.write? Well, it exists. The end.) It's a complete waste of money and of space. It doesn't even rate one half a star.
- Too much JavaScript, not enough JScript. I was hoping that this book would serve as a JScript reference based on the title but there was only one chapter on serverside JScripting. If I had actually paid for it, I would be ...
- Some of the scripts are useful i na canned way and if you know programming you can perhaps tweak them to your use. But the book does little to help you learn javascript... just example programs and screens.. no teaching of the why's & how's. There are better references on the web for free.
- This is a truly awful book. It is a classic example of some joker throwing some stuff down on paper and trying to sell it. Despite its large size, it contains very little information. The book mostly consists of lengthy, unhelpful examples printed in a large font to take up space. I ended up returning it and getting the Beginning Javascript book from the Programmer to Programmer series, and it's great. Don't waste your money on this one, though.
- If you are a beginning web developer, this book is for you. It will help you design great web pages with little effort. A must have.

3 comments about JavaScript in 10 Steps or Less.
- the idea of the book is great and it is very easy to read and understand.
But, it contains lots of errors and broken code. It can be very frustrating when the code you typed in exactly does not work and cant figure out why.
I feel the publisher should have invested in more proofreaders and code checkers. I switched to O'reilly's javascript the definitve guide and its cook book. Its was a lot tougher to get through but in the long run was a better choice.
- Yes, there are errors in this book and I agree that there should have been much better editing but nonwithstanding, it's a good book. It fills the gap well between a tutorial and a reference manual. In fact, fixing the errors reinforces the learning, otherwise you are getting less benefit by simply typing in the example code. The text gives you enough knowledge to fix the code. The downloadable code on the associated site has been corrected (the site could be better publicised in the book). The book covers a lot of ground and the info is well presented. I certainly don't regret buying it, I've found it most useful.
- Web designers, web developers and web masters, without this book, have something missing! All the scripts are there, ready to just refer to them, make a little change, if needed, then copy/past!That simple! As a web designer, this book worth me alot. Even though is not much useful for beginers to learn JavaScript, but a pill for web designers headache. Go for it if you're involve in any web improving job. Great at all...

5 comments about Sams Teach Yourself Javascript 1.3 in 24 Hours (Teach Yourself in 24 Hours).
- You need at least 3 books on any programming language you want to learn - especially if you're a new programmar. Each book will explain things a little bit different and this book gives applicable and relevant examples as well as step by step analysis of each line in many cases. It lacks a lot of the in-depth "how and why's" of more detailed books, but as a newbie you don't need or want the JavaScript "Bible's". You need to learn the fundamentals and that is what this book will teach you. It can be frustrating in that respect as well, in that you'd sometimes like to know more but that's where your other books will come in. Get one of the medium to advanced JavaScript books to explain the details and get this one to learn the basics. Well worth the money...
- This book is a good tool for people who want to delve into Javascript and have little or no programming experience. For those that are familiar with any type of high level language I would recommend a different text. The book needs an appendix with a reference for Javascript and the last two chapters have to be revamped. I found the last two chapters to be more of a "this is what you can do with javascript" instead of a lesson.
- I think the book lacks in-depth syntax explanations. I finished the book not knowing how to approach a custom script, and felt it could have concentrated more on the syntax end.
- Its not the greatest book, but i'm a newbie so what do i know? They assume you know something about programming, or atleast they don't go indepth into some of the basic programming ideas.
It wasn't a total waste i still got alot out of it, but i hope to find a better book
- Or should i say that there are many bad points.
1. Not a great place for beginers. 2. Not a great place for advanced users (or those with moderate javascript knowledge). I've had this book, as well as 2 others. This one is on the shelf and the other 2 are open on my desk. That should be enough to tell you something about it. The whole idea that you'll learn the language in 24 "classes" of 1 hour is dumb. But they have a "line" of books they want to sell, so that's what they need to do. ...
