- The only reason this book received one star is because Amazon.com doesn't think any book deserves zero stars. DO NOT BY THIS BOOK!!! I question Stephen Feather's knowledge of Java Script!!! I have had to debug each and every code example in the whole book!!! I wasted more time debugging Mr. Feather's poor knowledge of the JaveScript object model than I did learning about it!!!! I will NEVER buy another QUE book again if this is the kind of poorly edited books they put their name on!!! if you want to learn JavaScript, look elsewhere... O'Reilly is far more competent that Mr. Feather. I highly recommend the "Webmaster in a Nutshell" book and CDROM. The additional cost make it worth it!!!!
- This book does a terrible job of explaining Javascript to beginners. Look elsewhere!
- Need I say more
- I picked up a copy of this book to learn a bit about Javascript. I thought that the book was well written, geared a bit more towards intermediate users than beginners. What I found interesting, was that it had real world examples in it.
I also noted, that many of the reviewers seemed upset with some of the examples. When I loaded older versions of Netscape, it seemed to be more a problem with the netscape javascript interpeter then with the code itself. Also, one should take into account the date of printing. Some research shows that when first published, Netscape 3.0 was in beta. I liked the book. And I honestly think the other reviewers were a bit too harsh.
- I bought this book when I was curious about Java language. I think Javascript could be a bridge to understand the Java itself. This book is useful for you only if you already know about HTML. If you do not familiar with HTML, I suggest that you read "HTML by example" by Todd Stauffer (QUE edition).
This book is a nice introduction to Javascript and is intended "solmnly" for beginner. You will not assumed to understand anything about Javascript before reading this book. The author wrote this book as a step-by-step beginner self study. Any beginner will not be lost and confused, in general.
Some example programs might not work as other reviewer stated, but some other examples work. Despite the not-working-example-programs (if any), this book is still very useful for beginner. I think this book should be at least one of Javascript every beginner reference.

4 comments about Teach Yourself Javascript in a Week (Sams Teach Yourself).
- The title of the book states that the reader can learn JavaScript in a week. Although this may be true, two weeks is better suited for the amount of reading required to learn the contents of the book. Nonetheless, the book is extremely well written and easy to understand. The author's directions are concise, complete, and directed toward the reader of non-technical manuals. This particular edition was the first JavaScript book I read in the compilation of eight books that I have read thus far. The author provides detailed examples of JavaScript programming code that actually work when you type each one into a standard word processor and load the file into the web browser. I did not find any errors in the written code examples found in the contents of the book. I typed in all examples from start-to-finish and did not experience problems with any of the provided JavaScript programs. In addition, the included CDROM contains invaluable tools and utilities for creating and enhancing web site pages. I was impressed with the compilation of information stored on the CDROM, and I still utilize the contents frequently. It must be noted that I am now an experienced JavaScript programmer, so the contents of the CDROM must be extremely valuable to beginners. I would recommend this book to any person studying the JavaScript language, whether it be beginners, students, or professionals in the field of computer technology and programming. I currently hold a B.S. degree in Mathematical Theory, a B.S. degree in Computer Science, and am working toward an M.A. in CI(Applied Computer Technology). In addition, I hold a California Teaching Credential in Secondary Education, and I teach mathematics and computer science at Porterville High School in Porterville, California. Hence, I believe that this review has been substantiated as genuine and deserves the respective merit. In closing, I must emphasize the value of this book to beginners learning the intricacies of the language named JavaScript. It parallels the on-line guide written in HTML & JavaScript by the creators of the Netscape Navigator Browser who wrote the JavaScript language. Buy the book! It's worth it's weight in gold
- This book functions as a fabulous introduction to the language of JavaScript for beginners, as well as a terrific resource and reference for those already familiar to JavaScript. I used this book all last summer at work, and the results were great! :
- The biggest problem with this book is that it contains a good amount of erroneous code. I did not get very far in it before I had to refer to a more authoritative text. Then I bought the more authoritative text.
The publishers of these 'Teach Yourself..' series would save us all alot of hastle if they would rigorously test all program source before they publish the book!
- The book reflects the JavaScript as it was first inplemented with the Netscape Navigator 2.0. If you are interested in the history of JavaScript, or willing to start from the first simple examples, buy it.

- This was the textbook for an online course I just finished a week ago. I like the book and recommend it for beginner webmasters. You will learn the basics and then work up through Tables, Forms, and Frames.
You are given beginning files which you can download from the web. The book then guides you to modify these files by entering actual html code. You save and view the result on your computer. The book includes lots of screen shots so that you can compare your results to what it should look like. Since you are working on your computer to edit and view the pages, feedback is immediate. If it doesn't quite match the screenshot, you check your typing and try it again. All the example exercises are completed with Notepad and your regular browser. Style Sheets, JavaScript and Dynamic HTML all get a chapter each of about 30 pages. The majority of the book is about html. There is a quick reference appendix on lots of html elements. If you are looking for a book that you can read and "teach yourself", this is a good one. Remember my course was online and all the instruction I got was the book, itself. I spent six to eight hours completing the exercises in each of the ten chapters that my course covered to give you an idea of the time you might spend.

1 comments about Master the Web: A Complete Course on HTML and JavaScript (Visual Training series).
- This program is way too simple to command the price they are asking for it. There are many better tutorials out there for much less money or for free. It does little instruction but asks test questions for each page change. It is nothing more than a fairly good Power Point presentation. The website they use in example is simple and very low level. Not much Mastery here.

- The book just names all possibilities and options. You can even download it for free at Adobe's website. It lacks examples, explanations sometimes too short for a beginner. In short words: Not worth to buy.

3 comments about Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) for JavaScript Developers Pocket Guide (Adobe Developer Library).
- 'Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) for JavaScript Developers Pocket Guide' is your typical pocket book with ~150 pages of content discussing AIR with a Javascript focus. Usually pocket guides are alright at being a quick reference for a technology. Something quick that enables the user to be able to get a small bit of information without having to open a books hundreds of pages long. In this case I feel that the pocket guide is not the way to go. AIR is a unique technology that requires a book full of color and content and going the short route I feel isn't worth the time or effort for the reader. Topics about setting up AIR and how to use it simply don't belong in a mini-reference and I feel that the publication of this book wasn't the best decision made.
Content is fine but lackluster and not worth the time, find a bigger AIR reference instead.
***
- I was trying to learn Adobe AIR and was looking for some good set of learning resources. I found the book "Adobe AIR for Javascript Developers" from Oreilly by and started reading it online. A cool book, the authors have done great job on presenting the topics as an easilit readable pocket guide. Soon after reading this book, i felt i got the right resource i want for now.
* I found this book a bit more than a usual pocket guide.
* If you are a beginner and don't know anything about AIR, then this book is the best bet.
* The chapters were well organized to take you from novice stage to advanced stage in AIR.
* Covers ADOBE AIR 1.0
* Chapter I and II of this book teaches you many information and technical details about the AIR which might lots of time if you have to get it from Internet.
* The authors have given lots of code snippets while explaining a topic instead of lots of theoretical text. Some thing that programmers always look for.
* This book also gives an insight about Webkit engine, architecture of AIR and the security model of AIR
The most interesting part in this book is the "Mini cookbook".
* The mini cookbook chapter contains worked out samples with complete code explanation. It includes samples that can help you understand (from AIR perspective) Application Chrome, Windowing, File API, File Pickers, Service and Server Monitoring, Online/Offline, Drag-and-Drop, Embedded Database, Command-Line Arguments, Networking, Sound.
* This book is worth buying for its content coverage and its also very cheap.
- What makes a JavaScript desktop AIR application different from a Browser AJAX application? That is what this book is about. It doesn't waste all the pages in chatter or prolonged examples but has a nice mini-cookbook to show things off also.
I would have liked just a tip or two on doing this in Aptana or Flex Builder, but to be fair... it's a pocket guide not a larger 'everything you want to know'. It covers the core concepts of what I wanted to know and gives good references where to get more information on each topic. OH... don't forget it does have a browser capability built in. The discussion abut the security themes is great.
(FYI... I am the author of ColdFusion 8 Developer Tutorial )

3 comments about Javascript Manual of Style.
- I read the book from cover to cover. Then I read the appendices full through twice. And then I began reading the book again. Still, I don't have a complete knowledge of JavaScript. I can't write even the simplest javascript without making it a mirror of one that is in the book. I don't believe the book explains the structure of JavaScript. It explains what all the different functions, properties, methods, and event handlers do, and gives some good ideas of what to do with JavaScript. However, it doesn't explain how to put it all together. Keep in mind, I am a Junior at Oklahoma State University studying in the Computer Science department. I have a 3.70 gpa. This shows that I am not incapable of learning JavaScript, but that I have the necessary skills that the book recommends a person know before reading the book.
- Unfortunately, this was the first JavaScript book I ever purchased. I leafed through the book, hoping to learn how to script. Instead what I got were long, complicated, unexplained examples of code. This books shows HTML and JavaScript solutions for specific applications, with the HTML code looking more attractive than the JavaScript. Perhaps you can rip the code right from the book and use it on your site, if you so desire, but you will end up learning absolutely nothing about scripting. This book will serve me well by keeping me warm in the winter.
- The book is not the best book on Javascript, but it is very helpful. I'm not sure why someone gives this book one star and claims that it is only good for a fireplace. Definitley, the problem is not with the book !!.

- Not sure why this book is called Advanced ... it is no more advanced than my basic Javascript bible book. The object oriented section of the book is a whole 6 pages !! Are you kidding me?
Not impressed.
- This book is not advanced, it doesn't mention even current techniques used in the language, AJAX, JSON, libraries, etc. I has microsoft-tunnelled vision, it does not show the use the language has right now.
It seems the author just updates a couple of sections to create a new edition, please look further for a good javascript book.

5 comments about Practical Javascript Programming.
- I am very impressed with this book. I think the author did a great job on it. His secure site idea is a great one and helps to keep myself updated with the JS technology. I have cut and pasted lots of his code from the CD (the CD has over 100s of code as the author promises). The book does not talk about other technologies and explain JS syntax and examples in a very easy to understand manner. A must buy!!!
- There are so many books on JS today: its like trying to purchase the right shoe for all occasions. I know its hard, but I got lucky. The reason is that, I went to Reaz's lecture at the InternetWorld conference and convinced myself that I should get his book.
Just as he did a great job on this talk at the show, Reaz did an even excellent job with this book. I have to agree that I made a great choice. I learned all the practical information needed for my internet development project. I am pleased with the presentation of the book and I suggest that you spend your bucks in the right basket by purchasing this.
- My name is Mike Smalley. I am a 14 year old high school student from Bensalem High School in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. I have had some experience with HTML. I found this book to be an easy read. Having attended an HTML programming course in my neighborhood, I wanted to find out more about web development and possibly start a business. This book is great for someone who is Intermediate to Advanced in HTML, and is a superb reference for an aspiring web developer. Hats off to Reaz Hoque for a job well done!
- Good book for getting started. Very easy to follow. Impatient readers will like this book > like i did.
- I bought this book about a year and a half ago and have started and re-started reading it 4 or 5 times. Each time, I quit reading due to frustration. I was hoping to teach myself JavaScript, but could not do it with this book. It is not clearly written and it contains numerous errors. Finally, I bought another book and have learned more in 2 weeks than I have in almost 2 years with this book! The only saving grace of this book is the CD that comes with it. There are plenty of sample scripts and programs that can be copied into your own HTML code. However, I found that these also contain errors as well!
