5 comments about e-Commerce Applications Using Oracle8i and Java From Scratch.
  1. I have a basically Java background but no Oracle experience. This book helped me in understanding the ways in which I can make use of Oracle technology and my Java knowledge while working on e-Commerce projects. The scalability and performance topics in the book helped me a lot in my current project.

  2. I have read several books about eCommerce development. This is the only book that gave me enough information to understand the various aspects of developing eCommerce applications. The book uses the idea of an application that is developed throughout the book and various issues are dealt with in a logical fashion. Very practical and full of valuable tips. I was able to run all the code (some code had errors but I was easily able to fix them). I am disappointed that some reviews are focussing on a few typos in the book instead of looking at the bigger picture.

  3. Don't even bother about this book. The only thing good about this book is its title. It is a waste of time and money. There are so many good books out there.

  4. This book is a real value for those who want to get started on Oracle with Java. Less pages and enough to digest information. Of course, if you are loking to master Java technologies or Oracle or eCommerce, this not the deal for you. (...)

  5. This book lacks the detail required to get someone new up and running. The first 2 chapters are the best, but still need a little polishing. The rest of the book is lacking quite a bit of neccessary information so a user can read it and use the concepts.

4 comments about Jfc: Java Foundation Classes.
  1. I've read three JFC books thus far, and this one was my least favorite. It simply doesn't have the breadth of coverage that you would expect.

It's not a good reference book, because it only covers the com.sun.java.swing package. Nor does it have a comprehensive set of examples.

There are a couple of case study examples that are worthwhile, if you are specifically interested in the nitty-gritty details of using JFC and printing, or JFC with JDBC, but that's about it.

  2. The best way to learn about a new tool (which is what the JFC are) is to watch someone work with it. Though it's not a comprehensive reference, this book does explain how to perform lots of popular JFC tasks.

There are some cool examples involving network resources and displaying raster graphics.

Code is presented in an example-and-commentary format, so you can see what he's doing overall before he explains it piece-by-piece.

  3. I was looking for a book that would explain some of the more abstract and undocumented areas of the JFC like using the Action interface. I'm still looking. This book is a little too basic for me. To be fair, I haven't read the chapters on printing and JDBC.

Some of the tips are helpfull but I find that reading the javadoc and the swing connection provides a great deal of more information. However, I'm looking forward to Geary's JFC book when it's released. His Java 1.1 AWT book was the best book about the AWT that I've read.

I'm looking for a book that would explain how to design Java UI's from an architectural perspective rather that the details and placement of widgets. More details about desining and changing the models associated with the delegates would be nice. Maybe I should write it.

  4. I am new to the OOLanguage world. I have about 5 Java books on my desk. When I try to get an explaination I read until I find one that has examples and speaks plain enough for a novist. Out of all my books this book was the only one that addressed JProgress Bars and it was plain enough for me to apply it to my code.

I also used this book - from all my others to explain interfaces and abstracts.

Good reference book and in plain english for someone coming from the structured language field.

1 comments about Object-Oriented Programming (From Problem Solving to JAVA) (Programming Series).
  1. If you need to practice your Java object oriented coding, try using Garrido's book. He gives many example problems in pseudocode. These are very well suited to you taking them and manually translating that pseudocode into Java.

Think of this perhaps as similar to a Schaum's Outline book of problem sets.

Of course, you can also do the obvious of learning the object oriented aspects of Java from the book. But basically any book on teaching the general properties of Java tends to cover this to some fashion, since Java is fully object oriented. Garrido's book is a little more distinctive in having a collection of problems in pseudocode put right in front of you.
