3 comments about Informix On-Line Performance Tuning (Informix Series).
- This does not have anything that the Informix manuals do not have if you look long and hard enough. It does however cover a lot of ground in a very easy to read form. As a DBA familiar with online v7. this was money I do not regret spending at all !
- As an Informix novice, I've learned a great deal by plowing through the official documentation, but Suto's book really allowed me to leap forward by putting things in context and giving clear rules of thumb for a variety of configuration and performance issues. I've also written technical documentation in another field, and boy howdy, this is a good job of writing -- it's really a pleasure to read.
- This book does not contain as much detail as I would have expected from such a highly rated text. While it is informative, as a resource it is not terribly useful. There is little detail packed into the scant 163 pages offered here. Overpriced.

3 comments about Administering Informix Dynamic Server on Windows NT.
- Any one who bought this book: CD on the book is working? I mean if we can install and then create a database and run a 4gl program? thanks
- If you read the "ReadMe" file that accompanies the disk, you will see directions to the Informix site where you will get the license to install the engine software.
- I wanted to say how much your book (Informix on NT) helped me out last week in my installation at a large US Government facility.
After years of doing Unix installs, I started out with only basic experience using Informix on NT. But with your book as my guide, I was able to confidently do a professional install on NT. In addition to the install, with your guidance, I was able to configure and use On-BAR for the first time. Also, I used your book as a basis for overall Informix admin training. I am sure your book will be THE technical resource there for years to come. Anyway, thanks again for providing such a great technical resource. Your interview at the end with Gary Kelley was fascinating.

1 comments about Informix Dynamic Server.2000: Server-Side Programming in C.
- This book explains all the essential concepts involved in Informix datablade programming. It assumes that the reader is competent in C and SQL. It also assumes an understanding of operating system concepts such as threads and process control. The text moves quickly through the subject matter and it is not an easy read. It has a high information density and several chapters and sections must be studied, not just read. I found several spelling and grammar errors that are evidence that the book was poorly proof-read. There were, however, no errors serious enough to obfuscate the author's intent.
In comparison to the book "Informix Universal Data Option" by Allen and Bambara, "Informix Dynamic Server 2000" by Roy is much more appropriate for those who actually want to write Informix datablades. The Allen book covers a broader selection of topics, but at a much more general level and does not address datablade programming in the same depth as the Roy book. The CD that accompanies the book contains fully functioning copies of utilities from Informix such as BladeSmith, BladeManager, BladePack, SchemaKnowledge and the SQL Editor. It also contains all the Informix Reference Manuals from Informix Press in their entirety. . I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn datablade programming. It won't be the easiest book you've' ever read, but it does contain the information you'll need.

1 comments about Informix Guide to SQL: Tutorial (2nd Edition).
- Probably the most readable of all the informix manuals. A tutorial on SQL, gives you a quick start on developing any database. It provides a good overview on all the concepts related to Informix, though you may need to get precise behaviour from reference manuals !

- This book was a good orientation to Redbrick. I do not consider it a reference book, and can only recommend it to people just wanting to get acquainted with Redbrick.
