3 comments about Using the New DB2: IBM's Object-Relational Database System (Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems).
  1. This book offers a lucid presentation of the major features of the IBM DB2 for common servers products, which run on UNIX and PC platforms. The emphasis is on support for newer SQL features such as triggers and stored procedures that make DB2 an "object-relational" system. The book, which is replete with tips and examples, is useful both as a reference and a how-to guide. I would not recommend this book for beginners, i.e., those without some hands-on experience with a relational Database Management System; although the book is clearly written, the subject matter covered is broad and necessarily compressed, even within 682 pages. This book was recommended by IBM as a study aid for their new DB2 professional certification program, before the release of the DB2 Certification Guide for common servers book

  2. I have worked with serveral different RDBMS packages, but up until the last year never with DB2. Every database has their own SQL idiosyncracies and C/C++ interfaces so I needed a guide that would work both for someone new to the DB2 database but also for an experienced programmer.

I found Chamberlin's book to fit that need exactly. It covers everything from the basics on up to the in-depth details of database application programming. I have never been in a situation when I could not find the information I needed. I have also noticed that it is the resource of choice for our databse administrators.

"Using the New DB2" has great examples, ranging from simple SELECT statements to setting up full-scale applications making database calls with a host language. The text is very readable and informative. You will not find yourself falling asleep because an explanation was dry or too long or too short, too simple or too complex. It really fits all needs.

I give it 2 thumbs up!

  3. I'll be using this book to teach my 5th semester Computer Engineering students about SQL in a DB2 environment. The organization is excellent and the level of discussion is clear. My students need to learn about dynamic and embedded SQL as well as deal with the specifics of IBM's approach. Chamberlin should be congratulated for his approach and I hope that he continues to update his book as the DB2 product changes.

5 comments about DB2 Universal Database Certification Guide.
  1. The coverage of UDB database analyst functionality is its strength. You don't want to learn SQL syntax nor SQL programming from this text (read "A Complete Guide to DB2 Universal Database" by Don Chamberlin). I found the typos, text that doesn't agree with the figures, and incorrect answer keys, extremely distracting.

  2. After completing only two chapters I have become so frustrated with typos and scripts from the CD that don't run, I would put this book on the shelf if there was another option or I could live without learning this technology immediately.

The book was not accurately updated for the new version of DB2 - as evidenced by the CD installation instructions that reference version 1.x and include install instructions for directories that no longer exist on the CD!

  3. Very good book for the certification exams, and covers just what is required for the exams. But the number of typos needs a very good proof reader and the CD never works.

  4. Gotta rate this low, because the book is way out of date. DB2 is currently at 8.2. This talks about 6 and 7.1, for Pete's sake.

  5. This book is not for the latest version, so be aware of that. I think nevertheless, this book is a great book for going getting started with DB/2 and learning how to use this beast. It has everything from the basics of creating tables to creating triggers and aliases. I'm not sure how it will stack up for passing a certification exam, but before any exam or even study thereof, one should know how to utilize the product in question, and that's where this book comes in. For certification, I would combine this book with another more updated book, and one oriented specifically to passing some test or exam.

Despite being one of the excellent books out there, dropped a star from it, noting the errors and also being out of sync with the current product. I hope that the publisher could post an errata, or come up with a new version with more comphrehensive QA process on the book.

5 comments about DB2 for Z/OS and Os/390 Development for Performance (Volume 1).
  1. This book excels in clarity , depth and the number of topics covered . The questions at the end of the chapters are helpful too .
Also , anyone preparing for the DB2 Certification ( for OS/390 ) would benefit from this .

  2. I've believed for some time that Gabrielle Wiorkowski knows as much as, or more than, anyone outside of IBM's DB2 development team about DB2's use of indexes, optimization, and other aspects of performance. This book is based on what she has learned, her direct experiences, and the experiences of other DB2 professionals with whom she comes in contact. ... It is you, the administrator, database designer, or application developer who applies its capabilities wisely or unwisely. This book provides practical information of use to you today in your job environment. Marilyn Bohl, Vice President, Work Process Systems, San Jose, CA.

  3. Working with DB2 from 1985 forces one to read many books.
Gabrielle's book is the best ever I've read (and use) for DB2 on OS/390 (Z/OS) platform.
Very good explanations, clarity of write and easy to find structure.
I have many other books, but this is my leading (by far) favorite.
If you ever wish to know DB2 - this is the book you must have.

  4. This book is amazing! . As a DBA , I keep on referring this book again & again . It has very useful information & can be used by anyone who wants a really good understanding of DB2

Cheers to the author for writing such a wonderful book!

  5. DB2 for Z/OS and Os/390 Development for Performance (Volume 1&2
    by Gabrielle Wiorkowski

This book is extremely helpful for all levels of DBAs, system programmers and DB2 developers. It is most comprehensive and includes all features of v.6 and v.7.
At our shop, we have always used Gabriell's book for all releases
of DB2. This particular edition is very helpful, in the sense it is a text book for all levels and all parts of DB2 world.
Anytime in question, we look it up in this book for answer.

I will recommend this book as a must for DB2 tech team.
