5 comments about UnrealScript Game Programming All in One.
- This is pretty much designed as if you wanted to look at UnrealScript as a base programming language for learning basic programming skills off of. This is definitely not useful at all for practical modding or general game making. It just goes into very basic programming abilities that unreal script. To be honest, I bought this for a class that bases the language in unreal script. I thought this book may be useful since it is ALL IN ONE (yeah right!). I was already adept in basic programming and this book was absolutely useless for practical gaming modification.
- While this book doesn't actully get into writing funtional Code for the Game as far as i have gotten that is. it deffintly a Good place to learn the base of UnrealScript code.
With this base it and a review of other Scripts for the games it self, you can pretty much cobble togather anything.
No I'm still not do with this book And untill then, This review remains standing.
- This is book is not really about UnrealScript. It is an introduction to programming tough though Unreal Script. The book spends more time going over how to use tools than how to use the language. It appears the author set out to write a better book but had to finish in a weekend. I would not recommend this book for people like me looking for advances in UnrealScript and the classes of UT2004. I also would not recommend this book due to some LARGE mistakes in programming foundations. Not a good book for people looking to start game design. I wish I could have a refund.
- I was looking for a book to give in depth information on Unreal Script and how to make your own weapons, mods, mutators and game types, but I have not find anything in this book that helps you make your own types.
Unfortunately, this book was not what I was looking for. The title is misleading for its purpose.
- I just got this book and after flipping through it, I'm realizing it's not what I wanted at all. It's a book trying to teach programming from step one using UnrealScript. The examples used don't involve games. The programming given is not something you can directly apply to games. It's just programming. Plain old programming. If I wanted this I'd go buy a C# or Java book, not UnrealScript. It is NOT game programming and so it really shouldn't be called UnrealScript Game Programming All In One.

5 comments about 3ds max 6 Animation: CG Filmmaking from Concept to Completion (Consumer).
- This book is a very good surprise. It's very complete, well explained, very clear.
That book contains exacly what is said on the cover.. So no deception possible! (An exemple that Sanford Kennedy shoud follow because his book about 3ds max 5 is terrible, a total desaster.) So this is the book to buy! Thank you Mr Barret Fox.
- He shows how he developed, boarded, modeled, textured, rigged & animated the 3 figures shown on the cover. He doesn't wander off on side issues, nor does he gloss over the tricky parts. The book comes with a CD of usable models and scenes so you can see what and how he did it.
One word of warning is the author assumes the reader is advanced on the subject - don't get this book if you need a basic how-to animate with computer book.
- This is a great book on completing a project, it helps in every respect, lots of tutorials, references, information, examples etc....
One thing is not mentioned, to complete these projects, you will need more then 3DS Max 6, you will need to have Adobe PREMIER to make/edit the movie, for special effects & more, you will need COMBUSTION 3, even though it is not necessary but it will be essential for a complete animation, you will need to have a sound editing software like Cakewalk's SONIC or something similar and of course Adobe Photoshop.
I am very happy with the book, and have already started planning & sketching a storyboard plus modeling the environment I will use, my characters are almost ready, but because of this fantastic book, I didn't know about the sound editing and the movie editing outside of 3DS Max requiered to finish a movie, now with this book I will complete my animation project.
- I just received my copy, this is not much of a review but I have a question, i will update this as soon as i have my review.
My question: is it normal that the book comes with 2 cd-roms? And why are on the 2 cd-roms the same data?
- Hello everyone ! I bought this book cause I need it !
Not only for a better understanding of max tools but for the entire process of making of a good 3d movie animation !
Well, this book acomplish its purpose !The book pass through every stages of this process !Congratulations for the author and for his clarity expositions !

5 comments about PowerPointAdvanced Presentation Techniques.
- I bought this book because I wanted to find something that would take my work beyond the standard fair of PowerPoint presentations. I stumbled upon this book title just before its release and thought by the title that this was exactly what I was looking for. Advanced techniques would give me a book detailing the cutting-edge of PowerPoint. Boy was I wrong. A whole chapter on text placement? Other chapters detail creating an org chart, creating templates, and using the text tool. Does that sound like advanced techniques to you? Sorely disappointed in the book. My quest goes on for a cutting-edge PowerPoint book.
- I found this book to be just what I needed to go to the next level. Not only does it go into detail about features of the program, including ones I never knew existed, but it also gave me a lot of ideas for creating effects. For example, using custom animation on a stack of objects to make them appear and disappear in various combinations, and tying in music to individual objects as well as overall soundtracks from CDs.
I liked how it took things that I have used a lot before, like text boxes, and then ran through everything there was to know about them, every little-known option and piece of it. Yeah it does have entire chapters on things that someone might consider a basic feature, but it covers those features in an exhaustive way, way beyond what any other book talks about for them, including links to Web sites with add-ins and articles to go beyond.
This book will definitely have a place on my bookshelf for a long time to come. Any time there's something I want to do out of the ordinary with PowerPoint that I'm not sure about, here's where I'll go.
- The title is really misleading. This book teaches all beginning powerpoint techniques. I browsed through the book. None of these techniques are advanced. How to rotate a text box. How to fill it with color. Who calls these advanced techniques. Not me.
If you are lookong for a beginners book for powerpoint, you can give this one a try. For advanced book look for alternative.
- First of all, the comparison to Tufte's book, or a recommendation as a complement in another review for this book is a joke. To those who don't know what I am saying, Tufte tells everyone to stop using PowerPoint altogether, and this book would probably give him a headache.
- I was looking for an easy more in depth arena for power point, specifically how to cut small portions of a video and put them into the power point.
However it did have very clear information.

5 comments about ActionScript Cookbook.
- Get this book. That's really all that needs to be said. I'm a java guy learning flash, and what works best for me is a collection of practical (and useable in the real world) applications. That's exactly what this book is. And it's not the same thing you read in almost every programming book: 'this is a loop, this is a variable, this is a method...'. Useless stuff you have to wade thru to get to the meat. (...). I'm on MX 2004, and the book is for MX. (...) I can't wait for the next addition!!!
- I hate to write a bad review. I really do. But here's the deal: if you're just starting out with ActionScript, and you type in some of the examples in the book (several, actually) they will not work.
This is frustrating beyond belief.
I'm using FMX 2004 Pro, and every other example of code that I've tried to use just flat out will not work.
Sorry.
- this is a great book but it will not work with macromedia mx 2004 unless you set the export setting to flash player 6.
I got this notice from the author himself.
mx 2004 cookbook should be comming out in september 2005

- This book is one of the few Action Script books that specifically covers Flash Communication Server. Using this book I was able to build a chat server as well as a flash movie that could connect to it and have many clients interact with each other.
Good Book!
- The Actionscript Cookbook is an extremely useful resource for aspiring and veteran designers. I've been designing/developing since Flash 4 and I still found this book very insightful and full of great hints and explanations.
A decent book for beginners but better for intermediate to advanced developers and designers. I'd recommend Colin Mook's Actionscript for Flash MX (also by O'Reily) which explores more fundamental concepts in Actionscripting 1 which are still pertinent in many cases to AS2.
I appreciated the code examples, although admittedly I think I did remember finding a few errors, however the errors were on the nitpicking typo level and I usually found after getting annoyed thatI hadn't written the code correctly.
Their example on Storing Persistent Shared Local Objects (flash cookies) was particularly useful.
Well organized and clear (and no, I'm not affliated with O'Reilly, lol)

1 comments about South Africa in Pictures (Visual Geography. Second Series).
- I have not bought this book but I did browse through it online. It says that Johannesburg is South Africa's second largest city with 2,5 million people. As a South African, I can tell you Johannesburg is definitely not the second largest. It is the largest South African city with at least 3,5 million people. If the book cannot get such basic information correct (as will be born out by many statistics and many other authors), can one trust the rest of its contents?

2 comments about Real-time 3D Character Animation with Visual C++ (Book & CD-ROM).
- The title on the book reads C++.
It is detailed, and concise, Covers the nitty gritty of all the scary details down to Forward and Reverse Kinematics. Lightwave, and 3DS ascii file parsing, Motion Capture, and the Author's own Toon3D Engine. Thoroughly Enriched, Well Researched, and Easy to Read (for as complicated and detailed as this material is). well laid out. Definitely Hard Core Food for Thought. Thank You Nik.
- The language is simple and direct. Nik really touches the subject in depth and keeps the math simple. The sample code is also very useful. I found fairly easy to modify for my custom applications. The book has been teaching me a lot. I've been even learning about GL and MFC with his book. If you need to learn about character animation, Nik's book must be on your collection! Looking forward to the next one.

1 comments about The Fundamentals of SolidWorks 2008.
- After working with VEX robots and CO2 cars for 2 years in summer camp, I decided to switch from Autocad to SolidWorks and add some 3D CAD to my program. This book is a great help introducing students to 3D modeling. Students just love the SolidWorks and they can follow the book with little intervention from me. This is a life saver when you have 30 plus students in a class.
The best part of the book is all the model files of the VEXplorer, VEX Starter Kit, and F1 in Schools car assembly. These models are great time savers and really get kids excited about learning. But don't tell them that they are learning, just having fun...
