  1. These books should be required reading in or out of school and the home for the mathematica users or physicist . helps students master the skills and ideas necessary for their engineering classes. A must read!

5 comments about DirectX Complete.
  1. If you are dumb enough to buy a book without finding out whats in it, then you deserve the money loss in purchasing the book. If you had read what it says, you would know it doesn't cover D3D. As far as what it does cover, I give it 5 stars. Don't give it 3 based on your stupidity.

  2. Before buying this book make sure that you know C++ and MFC programming, otherwise this book will not help you. To begin with using MFC confused me to begin with because the reader had to worry about the MFC implementation AND the DirectX implementation. Using the Win32 SDK would make some of the early examples easier to understand. But after reading the whole book I realized that using MFC with DirectX can be a powerful tool. The thing I really loved about this book was that it encapsulated all of the discussed DirectX components into classes. Writing DirectX code is relatively hard to remember (the concept is easy though) and therefore the classes make DirectX easier to use. It's great to be able to focus on programming for your individual application and not programming DirectX. I would recommend this book to intermediate/advanced C++/MFC programmers who want to learn DirectX.

  3. This is a well-written and good book where all the code samples are written in VC++. The book also follows the object-oriented principals in a brilliant way. Other books I've read on the subject of directX programming have had code samples written in C and it has been almost impossible to reuse any of the code (C is also difficult to read). This book builds simple classes over each DirectX component. These classes are easy to read and easy to expand. Apart from a zeromemory statement that was missing on a description-structure I had no problems porting these classes to DirectX7. The book uses MFC and I really think it simplifies development. I know it's a bit slow, but I will do almost anything for some structure. ( I don't care if I loose a frame or two per second as long as it still runs on a Pentium). In my opinion if you want to program graphics C++ is the language of choice. C is too messy and hard to read. Visual Basic is messy and way to slow. This book is also easy to read. I have English as my second language and I didn't use my dictionary ones while reading this book. This book doesn't cover direct3D, but I didn't expect it either (I read other reviews before I bought It. If you didn't, bad for you). I also think people should understand that it's impossible to cover the DirectX 2d part and the 3dpart in one book (it would probably be a book with over 1200 pages). If you want to learn the basics of DirectX then >>> iDirectx = byThisBook->getGoodBook();

  4. First of all, this book is dull. Reading it is even worse than decyphering ms sdk files online. Actually the DX7 help files are much better, but for the sake of the arguement lets forget about it and see what this book offers on DX6. There is nothing here about d3d. Ok.. There is NO full game developed anywhere in this book like the cover claims, and nothing about 3d algorithms at all.

    Some sections (like the directMusic part) are useful as references, while otheres are plagued by very messy code built on top of MFC, that the even the author himself has mixed feelings about, apparently.

    The writing in most chapters is just a line by line justification why something is done in the code preceding the section. In other words, almost completely useless and very boring to sift through.

    If after going over the architecture and basic workings of the API, one still cant understand the code, whats this say about the code? You be the judge...

    Save the money.

  5. When I purchased this book I expected to be shown how to program a game in directx from the ground up. The book actually does cover an extensive amount of information regarding directx, but it is a frustrating and poorly constructed coverage. To be more specific, the author tends to skip explanations of WHY things are being done. This is frustrating when you can not get the code up and running. This book is not the book for someone who is looking to learn directx programming in a fun and intuitive way. If you are looking for a reference book on directx, then perhaps this book would suffice, but if you are looking to actually be taught how to create a fully functional, directx game from scratch then I would suggest you look else where.
