5 comments about Java Gui Development (Sams Professional).
- Style is subjective, and I really disliked this author's style. I think he was trying to be eloquent at times (simply loves the word "abstraction"), but it sounded muddled to me. The introductory material seemed especially burdensome - endless repetition which doesn't provide real insight.
And really dry. 140 pages of toy code showing the endless variations of all the event models. Other reviewers are correct that this book has way too many editing errors - especially in the code listings. C'mon - an introduction to Swing GUI development should be downright FUN! This book is simply too oppressive to recommend.
- The book is an easy read and places emphasis an the common architectural themes that pervade the jfc. It describes many of the important elements of swing in detail, with clear perspective.
It is lacking in ommiting some important swing components, but the book's clarity more than makes up for this. It is a gui roadmap rather than a gui bible
- I am new to Java from C++. I have done some GUI development using TrollTech QT library. This book covers basic concepts of GUI development in JAVA. It literally takes the reader by hand, one step at a time with real sample code. I like the whole presentation of the book; it is quite readable and well organized. I can't believe that I have just covered the basics of AWT and Swing in one week! Of course development with QT has helped me a lot. Anyhow, this is a good book and I recommend it to others who are just embarking on drinking Java cups and making some Java cups :-) Good thing also that the author did not distract the reader with exercises at the end of chapters! This is not a college X101 course indeed. Good.
Merci bien
- I liked this book. I am new to Java from C++. I have done GUI development using TrollTech QT 2.X. The author has done a very good job taking the reader by the hand, enphasizing on key concepts, and providing working sample code for nuts and bolts. I like the fact that the author did not distract the reader with exercises at the end of chapters. Always makes me feel like in some X101 class I took twenty years ago! Good book, well organized. The explanation about the 'lightweigthness" of Swing compared to AWT is a bit unclear, should have done better.
Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn Java fast, and Java GUI development definitely. I just can't believe that I have covered the basics (enough to be dangerous!) of AWT and Swing in just one week! Thank you Mr. Vartan
- This book is a superficial (at best) review of the Java classes needed to build Java GUI's. It does cover some AWT concepts in the first 100 pages, and very briefly covers a few key Swing concepts.
Most of the book is one (sometimes 2 or so) pages briefly describing each GUI control with a simplistic code example (with errors). You could get just as much information from reading the Javadocs! I'm an experienced Java programmer and originally purchased this book some time ago in hopes that it would cover GUI topics in depth. I was very disappointed in the depth of material. I would not even recommend this book for beginners because you can get just as much information readin the docs or from other sources.

4 comments about Macromedia Dreamweaver MX Fast & Easy Web Development.
- This books provides simple outline to various tools. It lacks the depth and content about the various tools. There are NO examples that you can use or follow. Pictures are hard to read so following the step-by-step instructions are not very easy. It does provide a very gereral overview of using the dynamic features of dreamweaver. I would recommend this book ONLY as a general guide, not as a tool to learn anything in depth.
- This is not a training book, but if you are familiar with Dreamweaver Ultradev 1.0 or 4.0, and you want a quick reference on how to insert, edit, delete & search content on a database, this is a good book (that was exactly what I was looking for). Please, note that it focuses on ASP/VBScript technologies, although there's a starting point on ASP.Net.
If you really want to learn how to work with non-dynamic features of Dreamweaver MX (tables, layers, templates, css, etc.), I don't think this is the book for you.
- If you are looking for a picture book that points and shows you what all the menus do then maybe you will like this book. This book is very basic and does not go into detail on any of the menus and functions in Dreamweaver. This book also is more pictures (blurry, hard to read) then text. I found very little that was helpful and the rest I felt was a waste of time to read. I am the type that needs detailed explanations on how to use the different options in Dreamweaver and this book does NOT offer that.
- I found this to be a quick intro to Dreamweaver MX (I already did the tutorial for an earlier version) and it was helpful... but it is really just an overview. Also, the "companion web site" that is supposed to have code examples is no longer there!!!
I was able to get this at Fry's for $20 with a $20 mail-in rebate... that price probably explains why the on-line info is not available. :(

2 comments about Advanced Linux 3D Graphics Programming (With CD-ROM).
- The "Advanced Linux 3D Graphics Programming" is the second volume in the set of books written by author Norman Lin. The title "advanced" is rather crudely portrayed in the examples the author has written. Many of the examples are based off true cross-platform development which adds hundreds of lines of not needed code considering the book was supposed to be for linux.
The "advanced topics" include texture-mapping, lighting, fog, and several other components which sound impressive at first however the examples given are rather long in code-size, and don't get straight to the point of what the example does. I was rather disapointed that the lighting section had no real details on the math behind it all. From the title of the book, one would assume you would be programming 3d graphics in linux, however the author spends 60% of the book talking about Blender and World Foundry. Those programs should have been in a separate book rather then used as filler so the author could make several extra bucks on a new book. The examples are all using the GLUT SDK for MesaGL (OpenGL for Linux) which doesn't teach you about true linux X11 initialization. I think this was a big disapointment, and would not recommend this book.
- I highly recommend this book. Reading through the introduction,
the author states an 'educational slant' to the design and construction of the code within the book. This is important to keep in mind, as there is a trade off to keep the book more illustrative of the 3D pipeline design process.Recommended for anybody who wants to further their knowledge of not just Linux, but to the entire 3D process on the computer. An excellent addition to his primer on Linux 3D.

1 comments about SolidWorks 2005 Tutorial & MultiMedia CD.
- I am a professor at a large community college in the Midwest. I have been using SW for over 5 years. I adopted this book for my Fall semester freshmen design class. I have been using books by these authors for over three years.
This book does a great job in providing clear and precise procedures on using SW to create parts, assemblies and drawings. The book has you create numerous assemblies: two bar Linkage with various configurations, support bracket, bar and collar, etc.
You then insert the created assemblies into drawings. The drawings contain numerous sheets, views and features. You create Exploded views, Isometric views, bill of materials, parametric notes, linked notes, etc. Get the idea? It is a wonderful book from start to finish. This book is accurate, up to date, and easy to follow for all levels of new users. If you are teaching SW, this is the book for your class.
