2 comments about Conducting the Webmaster Job Interview: IT Manager Guide with Javascript, Java Applets, Front Page, Flash, Perl, PHP+, and DreamWeaver Interview Questions (IT Job Interview series).
  1. First off, let me state that I'm sleeping with the author. We have been married for many years, and I feel obligated to toss-in my opinion of her book! (guys, you know where I'm coming from).

I don't much at-all about specific programmer languages like Flash and Perl, but I was able to ask the sample questions to job candidates, and they worked very well.

Janet put a great-deal of effort into gathering salient job questions for this book, and I think that she has done an excellent job in condensing the main qualifications that employer's desire in a successful programmer.

  2. This book is riddled with typographical, grammatical, and factual errors. It also manages to contradict itself in several places.

    Don't buy this book.

3 comments about Opengl Programming Guide: The Official Guide to Learning Opengl, Release 1.
  1. I am an experienced graphics programmer an I have found this book to be the absolute bible for OpenGL programming. To all the readers I would suggest to pay an special attention to chapter 3. The camera analogy made by the authors conatins perhaps the most clarifying paragraphs along the book. This book covers all aspects about 3D application programming and OpenGL. It is so easy to go through it in a progressive fashion that no one should find any difficutlties in becoming a real expert 3D programmer. The chapters devoted to avanced rendering techniques make things to appear so simple... So lots of ins for the whole book. The only out I have found along it, is that it looks pretty much like the OpenGL specification, and for those readers without a good background of programming and windowing might be a little difficult to understand how opengl relates to X windows or Windows NT. Anyway, thanks to the authors for this text. I guess that Mr Kempf isn't going to have the things easy with his 'Official Guide to learning OpenGL release 1.1'. I wish him the best luck in the world. Javier Velasco (SPAIN)

  2. Regardless of what other OpenGL books you get, the Red Book is the place to start. Get the latest version for OpenGL 1.1. Comprehensive review of entire API, and how to do all the basics.

  3. This book is a fantastic reference to OpenGL, Glut and Glu APIs. Even if you didn't want to do Computer Graphics with OpenGL - the Glut and Glu APIs are fantastic in their own right. This book rocks - what you can't figure out directly is given in clear and meaningful examples.

What says it best: At the end of the semester I didn't try to sell it to the college bookstore!

5 comments about Tcl/Tk Pocket Reference.
  1. The Tcl/Tk Pocket Reference is a good basic guide to the Tcl syntax. The text is a simple straight-forward listing of the different Tcl terms, their functions and their signatures, alphabetized by category.

  2. If it's important to you to have a quick reference in paper form, then by all means this is the book for you. It's technically accurate. It is getting a bit out of date, but Tcl has an excellent track record for maintaining upward compatibility. You may miss out on new features, but you won't be led too far astray.

If, on the other hand, you're comfortable with browsing the manual on-line, then save your money. There's little in this book that isn't also in the on-line manuals that come with Tcl/Tk, and you can be certain that the on-line manual matches the Tcl/Tk release that you're using.

  3. Tcl (Tool command language) scripting language.
TK (took Kit) graphic tool to help build graphic interface.
You will be surprised to know that you know a lot of the commands and concepts already.
The reason for different languages is to be more efficient in the purpose of the program. In my case this is used for writing code for phone switching systems. No one can remember all the commands; so it is wise to carry your pocket reference with you. For those that do not have the occasion to use Tcl/Tk the reference helps you stay culturally literate. And who know one day you may have the need and say "now where did I put that Pocket reference?"

  4. These pocket reference guides pack an amazing amount of information. In my opinion, this book (along with other pocket references) are better than some full sized books. One thing I like about this book is that it goes straight to the point. For example, I wanted to look up the after command. So, in a few seconds I find the description, and I immediately learn the syntax for this command. There is no long description or theory to read through, the bulk of what you need to know is right there. Anybody who is in to TCL/TK should get this book!

  5. This reference is good if you are only looking for syntax or available options to a command you understand.

If you have questions about the way the commands work, or the concepts behind them (what is a list?) then you'll find that you keep going back to the larger books.

So I am currently in Ousterhout for most of my questions and then opening this infrequently to check syntax.

I think it could have had a more extensive index and I cannot see any order in the table of contents.

1 comments about Essential Computer Animation fast: How to Understand the Techniques and Potential of Computer Animation (Essential Series).
  1. Computer Animation is now worlds away from its early beginnings when programs merely mimicked the hand drawn cartoon process. It's now regurlary used for creating wonderful special effects in major movies like Titanic, Toy Story, Antz and Bugs Life. The book tells you about basic principles used in the powerful sotware products on the market and the terms and processes involved, in a easy-to-understand way with no complicated math. So if you want to learn more about 3D computer animation without being swamped by complex mathematics, then read this book and have fun creating your own animated programs.
