  1. Claris has done an outstanding job in upgrading Filemaker Pro to version 3.0 but the accompanying manual is incredibly incomplete. Thanks to Mr.Moyer's well written and organized manual, new Filemaker Pro users can quickly get up to speed on this excellent relational database. I found the book easy to follow and the examples helpfull and clearly explained. Moving slowly from the basic to complex topics, Mr. Moyer makes building complex databases understandable, even to the beginner. My only wish is that a disc be enclosed in the book with a few examples of the more complex abilities of this software. It is a book well worth the price and I thank Mr. Moyer for publishing it as quickly as he was able

  2. This is the title to get if you are already familiar with flat database structure and look-ups and now want to understand and harness the power of relational databases in Filemaker. Moyer makes relational database concepts easy to understand with concise, real-world examples; he does not waste your time with a rehash of the Claris Filemaker manual. (I'm using Filemaker 4.0 but did not find Moyer's book lacking in any way). Especially welcomed were his tips on avoiding the classic database design pitfalls. This is the first computer book I have ever bought (and I have stacks of them) where I felt the money was totally worth it. For once, someone has made my job easier.

  3. After working with the likes of Paradox, dBase and InfoManager it was a relief to find a database system that was "user friendly". The next trick was finding an after market reference to help me make the most of it. This book does it all! Appropriate for the beginner but not bellow the advanced. Chris Moyer has a top ten hit with this one in the computer reference division.

  1. In FileMaker Pro Advanced For Windows & Macintosh, Cynthia Baron and Daniel Peck successfully collaborate to present a visual, task-based approach to learning FileMaker, as they use pictures to guide the reader through the software, clearly illustrating what to do and how to do it. The layout is ideal for use as a reference book and offers concise, "user friendly" steps and explanations. FileMaker Pro Advanced For Windows & Macintosh is an ideal, very highly recommended how-to guide for intermediate and advanced level FileMaker Pro users.

  2. It's well written and easy to follow but the "advanced" claim is misleading. There are some useful tips, pointers and ideas but if you want to learn some advanced techniques you are better to get out on the web and start searching. The CDML section is particularly lightweight.

  1. This book is compiled from postings and writings on the Desktop Publishing Forum on Compuserve back in the late 1980s. While it's out of date and out of print now, the solid information in it on typography, composition, and design make it worth trying to find a used copy from one of ...out-of-print sources. Don Arnoldy, Brad Walrod, and Thom Hartmann did a brilliant job with this book!

  1. I had a hard time finding the specific answers I was looking for. For example, I spent hours trying to figure out why "View as List" wasn't working using Instant Web Publishing. All I needed was someplace that said "You can't do the following under IWP" followed by a specific list. Nowhere to be found. And the enhancements to web publishing in version 5.5 were tacked onto the end of the book, rather than being integrated into the chapter on web publishing. In fairness, I did find many of it's step-by-step instructions useful, but I expected more.

  2. After year's of frustration with MS-Access, culminating with OfficeXP, I switched to FileMaker Pro. The software user manual and tutorial are first class (MicroSoft ought to try it) but, seeing prior experience with Access, I hoped to get additional insights from this book. Frankly, I didn't. It seems cookbook, poorly organized, dully written and of little use without a practice CD-rom. Worse, the latest FileMaker Pro 5.5 updates were tacked onto the end -- making this a poorly organized reference text. Disappointing!

  3. Not too bad for those with about 1 year FMPro experience. This book is not a natural follow-on to the basic FMPro quickstart book, and the examples seem to be wrong in several places.
However, I did pick up several useful bits of info, and would recommend it as a rainy day read.
