1 comments about Programming Internet Applications With Delphi 32.
- I have been using this book for 9 months. I don't use the winsock code because there are higher level OCX controls to do the job. The real value of this book is in the theory. Don't go searching for those long RFCs. Appendix A and B has become my bible for the SMTP and NNTP protocols. The scenarios presented in the examples throughout the book, helped me understand the stages of a session between the server and client. You won't get too much Delphi-specific info but as long as the various TCP/IP protocols are in use, this book is a classic.

- Mr Cogswell seems to know his topic, but the editors/testers did a terrible job checking out the step-by-step instructions and examples: the diskette install didn't work (I was able to figure out how to install it manually on W95, though). Another example was on page 425: steps 3-5 were a copy of steps 3-5 from page 420 - that was fine on page 420, but made no sense on page 425. There were several other examples of this type of poor proofing throughout the book
- Concur with previous review. Example CRT programs don't work. The discussion of how to create console applications must be from Delphi 1, because it doesn't apply to Delphi 2. Fairly well written, but progresses very slowly. A better editing job would make this a good book. I think it's a cheap marketing ploy to put a great programming author's name (Tom Swan) on the book as "series editor". If Tom Swan had really participated in writing this book, the example programs would actually work.

2 comments about Delphi 2 Multimedia Adventure Set: The Best Way to Develop Multimedia with Animation, Sound, Video, Music, and More with Delphi 2.
- This is an outdated book on Windows multimedia. it does touch delphi multimedia just barely. does not have any power multimedia techniques and focuses too much in the creation of an hypertext engine.
Finally the book seems to be a too quick hack of the same book for Visual Basic programmers, it even uses "Visual Basic" instead of "delphi" in various parts of the book. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
- This book is pretty much useless unless you just want to build their hypermedia engine. (What good is that? Don't you have enough of your own programs to work on without having to launch into the construction of someone else's project just to demonstrate the application of some particular sample of code?). This book has been gathering dust since I bought it. I couldn't find anything dealing with general multimedia programming, just working with their hypermedia engine. If I have to use the phrase 'hypermedia engine' one more time I'm going to explode!!! I only wish that before I had bought this book, someone had already written a review on it so that I could have saved my money. Not recommended for purchase by anyone!

1 comments about Using Delphi (Using ... (Que)).
- If your looking for a good informative read without the arcane language of the manuels. This book reviews the interface and components with accurate examples and provides a checklist for delivering database applications. They also include references for those who would persue the technical aspects of the underlying ObjectPascal language.

3 comments about How to Program Delphi 3.
- Frank Engo's book is excellently written for beginners. Delphi 3 for Dummies is *NOT* a good beginner book. D3fD is still a good book, just not a good one for beginners. How to Program Delphi 3 features a large typeface, screenshots, commented code, and it's not a huge book (a 800 page book might be daunting for newbies). Not really a Pascal reference, but because Pascal isn't difficult to read, his comments would immensely explain what is going on at each line. I own at least 8 Delphi books I can name off the top of my head, and if I've ever seen a good one for beginners, this is it.
- I am a Clipper programmer moving to Delphi and I found this book to be an excellent introduction to programming in Borland Pascal.
I have read several Delphi books and really hate the style that shows you how to browse through the DBDEMOS animals in a simplistic--almost childish--window. Then they move on to programming the Windows API or other esoteric topics. Mr. Engo move steadily from the very simple to the more complex. This is not a book for the advanced user--probably not even for the intermediate--but it is possibly the best for the novice. He covers topics such as How to dress up your interface, How to create Multiform applications, Common Programming mistakes, Working with Procedures and Functions and How to build database applications -- with and without SQL. The biggest disappointment--and I particularly wanted help on this--was the section on reports. It refers to ReportSmith (D3 comes with QuickReports!) An added bonus is a library of functions--including the source code. They are fairly elementary, but an excellent learning tool, especially for those of us who wrote our own libraries in Clipper, and suddenly feal naked when we come to a new language without years of accumulate functions. If you are looking for a good introduction to Delphi 3 -- I'm pretty sure everything will work in Delphi 4 -- then this is the book for you.
- VERY EASY TO UNDERSTANSD
