  1. This is nothing more than a reproduction of the MSDN andBorland help. Some of the examples are copied verbatim from MSDN andtranslated to Pascal. Do not waste your money on this book. It does not deserve shelf space in your library.

  2. I bought this after seeing several newbie recommendations for it. What a waste of money! This is nothing but a dead trees version of the Win32 API help with some banal examples thrown in for good measure. It's an embarrassing hack of a book. If you want to actually *master* the core API, get Delphi Unleashed or Delphi Developer's Guide and study MSDN extensively.

  3. The examples shown in this book are of little more value than those found in MSDN. They're simplistic, strawman examples that you don't need a book to figure out. Moreover, the coverage of the API is incomplete. The Shell interface, for example, should be covered in depth -- it isn't. Worse yet, the writing is very bad. I've never read such boring, lackluster prose. The authors show no noteworthy ability for making difficult concepts easy to grasp -- a must for the able technical writer. I recommend that you get Delphi Unleashed instead.

  4. I cannot find out for an expert trick or undocumented windows API. I expected more about this book ! Badluck for me :( But , It may OK for some beginner programmer , who know ?

  5. I believe, it's on every Delphi programmer to concentrate on this book.

3 comments about Delphi Nuts & Bolts for Experienced Programmers: For Experienced Programmers.
  1. This book definitely is *not* for experienced programmers. For example the authors spend a paragraph explaining what an integer is! Furthermore, it doesn't get into the "nuts and bolts" at all. It is written on a very elementary level. Another annoying feature is the very frequent suggestion that the reader refer to the online reference for information on a topic. I would think that someone buys a book because he can't get the answers from the online reference. The authors also often refer you to another chapter in their book. It is as though they didn't care enough to organize their book properly. Spend your time and money elsewhere

  2. I read this book as a transition from VB to Delphi about a year ago while still in school. I thought it was excellent at the time, but in retrospect with the experience I have gotten as a Delphi Developer since leaving school, it is NOT for very experienced programmers. If you are a student or someone with light experience in VB, this may be a good transition.

  3. This book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. And all because it says: "for Experienced Programmers"... To clear it up: It's really a beginners guide! The first chapters explain what Delphi is. Then it tells what every menu-item in the IDE does. It explains some things about the Delphi types.

If you're a beginner with Delphi and you've lost the original manual, then consider purchasing this book. Otherwise, it's just a waste of your money.

2 comments about KickAss Delphi Programming: Cutting-edge Delphi Programming with an Attitude.
  1. Much of the code was ommitted on the CD. The code that is there does not work. There are no updates on the publisher's site as specified in the book. One of the authors who replied to my emails was sympathetic, but was also dissatisfied with the publisher. The chapter on hierarchical databases was the worst offender - and the main reason I bought the book. So much promise, so little gain. However, it was written well and I like the explanations. Raymond Kennington

  2. Most code samples don't even compile. A third of the book is wasted on some fictional account of an idiotic detective (what does that have to do with Delphi programming??). The technical info is scarce, and there isn't any depth whatsoever. Not worth the effort of opening the package.

1 comments about Programming Internet Applications With Delphi 32.
  1. I have been using this book for 9 months. I don't use the winsock code because there are higher level OCX controls to do the job. The real value of this book is in the theory. Don't go searching for those long RFCs. Appendix A and B has become my bible for the SMTP and NNTP protocols. The scenarios presented in the examples throughout the book, helped me understand the stages of a session between the server and client. You won't get too much Delphi-specific info but as long as the various TCP/IP protocols are in use, this book is a classic.
