4 comments about Practical Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Administration on 21 CD-ROMs.
- On these 21 CD's you can learn all you would ever possibly need to know to adminster this latest version of SQL Server. The instuctor explains difficult concepts in a way that's easy to understand. Best SQL Server guide available!
- If you are looking for SQL 2005 training these CD's are not worth it. I give you the following problems:
-Many of the concepts are covered by him reading from books-on-line word by word with no additional explanation.
-In the permissions tape he actually had an error, tried to figure it out, then moved on without an explanation or fixing the problem.
-The instructor speaks very, very slow and there is no way to accelerate the recording. Sometimes there is at least a minute of nothing happening. Drives me crazy.
-He shows you things, but gives no explanation of what they are or how to use it. He simply points it out, for instance, a scrollable list, he scrolls through the list so that you can read what's on the list and then moves on to the next topic.
I could go on and on and on, but I think you get the idea. The author may be very knowledgeable in SQL, but he is not a trainer. Don't waste your money.
- Till today (01/07) one of the best traning CDS for learning for SQL Server 2005 Administration
- It has been for my tech staff. After two promotions and salary raises, you'd say this too. They performed our system upgrades flawlessly and give credit where its due: To this Practical SQL Server 2005 Administration multimedia training course on CDs.
We switched over our three SQL server systems to v.2005 last year. We installed a copy of the Practical SQL Server 2005 Administration online, 3 months before the actual upgrade. While the staff used it first as a training tool, now they use it as an instant reference and troubleshooting guide.
I must say, this investment paid for itself at least 10 times over.
I'm no die-hard techie, but did (had to) learn and use a few functions on my own:
- How to resolve performance bottlenecks
- How to maintain databases in a 24/7 web environment for our intranet
- How to configure ODBC datasource access
- How to configure and manage linked servers.
These and other "How to" items and excercises are on CD #21 (there is a total of 23 CDs).
The course comes, out of the box, with 2 books:
1. Pro SQL Server 2005 by Thomas Rizzo at al., of the SQL Server Group at Microsoft.
2. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Administrator's Pocket Consultant from Microsoft Press. This one also gets a lot of use by the staff.
You also get, on CD #23, SQL Server 2005 Express, a free, easy-to-use, lightweight version of SQL Server 2005. Using the development tool of your choice, you can start building applications with it right away. We haven't had the time so far - that's news to most of you, isn't it?
Overall, my and my staff's verdict is: Highly recommended!

5 comments about NuSphere MySQL.
- I'd read reviews of NuSphere MySQL on other websites, which said it was great for newbies: easy installation and great tools.
I'm a veteran internet programmer, but finally bought it for two reasons: I needed an easy way to get my customers up and running quickly, on a common webserver platform, and I wanted versions of the tools running under Windows as well as Linux. This package turned out to be a lifesaver. It comes with lots of features, including out-of-the-box, easy to install and use, Apache, Perl, PHP and MySQL, all configured correctly, and working on multiple platforms. I found the integrated phpmyadmin utility a great way to manage my MySQL databases. Best feature: remote install, so I can install it on a headless machine at my ISP.
- Lots of good stuff in this box. Good documentation. THe headliner is the NuSphere database: it is just like MySQL except it has real row-locking so it isn't SLO when multiple users are beating on it, and it has auto-crash recovery, so my beeper doesn't go off.
Install is sweet, and works remotely for headless installs. Full webserver middleware stack (Apache, nusphere MySQL, Perl and PHP) installs on Linux and windoze, even on virgen systems. If you've ever tried to get bugzilla up under windoze, you'll like this: it comes with a multi-platform bugzilla for free. Some dba tools in the bundle, some apache stuff, but I haven't tried it. For me, its the database stupid. Nice support but telephone is extra, you have to use email.
- I purchased NuSphere MySQL directly from NuSphere after reading reviews on the internet. I first used it on Windows and was very happy. It installs very quickly with just one or two clicks, and I had a web server, database, and development environment all running. Much better than Microsoft PWS with FrontPage, and much faster.
I recently switched to Linux for my website development, and was happy to see that it worked just as well. All the same tools, fast one-click install, although the user interface was easier under Windows. Very good organization of the files, too, making for easy backups. Last month I purchased NuSphere PHPed, and it works very well with the NuSphere MySQL, but is more for professional developers.
- I tried this software and couldn't create a simple database with out reading a lot and wasn't easy to configure.
- Save your money. Not even as good as freeware.

2 comments about Borland Delphi 2005 Professional - upgrade package ( HDB0005WWCS180 ).
- I was excited at the prospect of getting this product. I own Delphi5, and the idea of an upgrade that I could use to support my existing code as well as upgrade to .net in future or even (horror of horrors leave Delphi and Switch to C#) seemed great, talk about covering all your bases. The new features sounded sensible too. Synch editing (where changing a single identifier in a selection changes all the others) seemed a great idea.
Having always stuck with Borland in the past I was expecting something professional and polished, sadly I think Borland have lost the plot.
D2005 tries to be a Jack of all Trades and ends up being a master of none.
The user interface is cluttered (it took me about ten minutes just to hide all the options for .net, interweb etc when i was trying to build a win23 application. I think it would have made far more sense to present the user with a wizard at startup that would have determined which components appear in the IDE.
Performance is awfull, I have a fast(ish) machine, AMD Athlon XP 3200+ with 1 GB Ram, and the IDE would frequently freeze for three or four seconds at a time whilst I was navigating through my code. The minimum specs of a PII/450 are a joke as are the recommended specs of a PIII/850. Even after turning off code completion and virtually all the other editor options it was still barely usable (in fact if only the options that were available in Delphi 5 are switched on, peformance is still terible).
And reliability! I had to do a double take on this, I was sure I must have installed something incorrectly or done something else wrong. It is unbelievably bad. I got constant Access Violations (I think Borland knew full well how unreliable it was going to be because 'helpfull' dialogs pop up explaining that a AV has occurred and asking you if you still want to save your work! don't remember that in previous versions!) and after these AV's any other action would result in further AV's. I think a lot of the reliability is down to memory leaks in the IDE. It would work OK for the first few minutes and then gradualy get worse and worse the more time I spent using it. I was so shocked at the reliability that I went onto Borlands Quality Central Site and, sigh, it wasn't an instalation issue, lots of people were having the same problems. I uninstalled the application, then reinstalled clean and added the patches available from the QC site but it made little if any difference. Eventually I gave up and reinstalled Delphi5, ah bliss, fast IDE, fast builds (its actually a lot faster to constantly rebuild to check your code for errors in Delphi5 then it is to use highlighting in Delphi 2005) no AV's!
Overall then: nice idea if they can get the bugs out and maybe sort out the screen clutter a bit, but nowhere near stable enough at present for real world development.
- I am extremely impressed and satified by the capability, simplicity, power, magic and genius of the Borland Delphi products. I have used Visual dBASE, Visual Foxpro, Visual Basic, Access and Visual Objects, and none of these products have the simplicity and power of this amazing product from Borland.
Moreover, this product dramatically reduced my programming time. Maintenance of a Delphi program is also a snap. For example, I wrote a DOS business invoicing and inventory program using Clipper in 3 weeks time, but the same program rewritten using Delphi was accomplished in only 3 hours. This was made possible because of the power of the Delphi database components and user interface components. The finished product is neat and incredibly fast. In the Clipper old days, I spent most of my time writing codes, now I have much more time to share with my family and friends, and enjoying other things life has to offer, thanks to Delphi.
This is the programming environment I always dreamed of. The beauty and elegance of Delphi surpasses anything I have seen and tried.
Naturally, there is no free lunch for anything in life, there is a steep learning curve. Delphi is the Clipper for the 2000's and more!
