3. There are some important additions, such as clustering and failover support, and a few niceties like user-defined functions and indexed views. Upgrading the data format from 7 to 8 was seamless, but replication was painful. Gone are the Enterprise Manager HTML-based pages at the machine level, replaced by a small maze of things to do to make replication happen. We finally had to reinstall the server to make replication happy. The help file on this topic is a joke. It reads something like "Step 1, configure replication. Step 2, start it up." with absolutely no detail.

   My bottom line: take your time in upgrading.

   "SQL Server Developer Edition is a version of SQL Server with some restrictions on functionality, and is designed for development and testing purposes."
   
   That is partly correct: In fact, Developer Edition is designed for development and testing purposes. That's why there's NO restriction on functionality. Only restriction is on LICENSE.
   
   "Developer Edition is designed to let you build any type of application on top of SQL Server. While you'll enjoy Enterprise Edition functionality, there is a special development and test end-user license agreement prohibiting production deployment." .. (...)



2. I agree with others on this "There is NO restriction on functionality. Only restriction is on LICENSE." Great product.



3. This Devloper edition is running great on my Windows XP machine with SP2. I have no problems at all with it. It is feature rich and is restircted to a testing enviroment as opposed to a produciton enviroment. Well worth the money! If you need free, Microsoft has other SQL alternatives such as MSDE SQL desktop engine and a downloadble fully functional SQL Express 2005 verison of CTP (community Technology Preview) So many reasons to convert from Sybase there is not room here to list them.



4. I have been fighting with "FREE" tools, and this is the best $44 dollar investment I could have made. It makes working with the (MSDE) Microsoft Desktop SQL Engine very quick.



5. Price was excellent and product was in stock. Used expedited shipping and received my boxed product very quickly. All instruction manuals, codes, etc. in tact.

1. This is the most significant upgrade to Visual FoxPro since version 3.0. The Report Writer enhancements alone are worth the price of the upgrade, but there are also significant improvements in speed, expanded SQL syntax (very, very expanded!), better .NET interoperability, much easier use of GDI+ graphics, and more. VFP is still Microsoft's "stealth" app, but that's OK. It can be your "secret weapon" too--laugh while you get projects done in half the time it takes the poor souls stuck with .NET, and make them wonder how you do it.



2. Had a client that needed to upgrade and needed it fast. Amazon was right to the rescue.



3. I've finally upgraded to VFP 9 and it's just tough that Microsoft has announced this will be the final version... just really tough! Installation is quick along with product updates from Microsoft.



4. I've just upgraded from Visual FoxPro 6.0. I could stay developing using this old version, but I want a more easily approach to Internet applications with VFP, so I'm still exploring the new features in this 9.0 version. There is a lot to use in this new version, but the little I have explored till now seems to be outstanding. Express version of InstallShield software included makes VFP a complete tool for the developer.
   A printed summary guide about new features is missed in this upgrade package.

1. If you're anyone who needs to back up a remote 2000/2005 sql svr database, this is the cheapest way to do it. While the free express edition management studio express is great, it doesn't have a built-in import/export feature that you get with the management tool in this dev edition. If you don't need the Tasks->Import/Export functionality, or features not found in the free sql svr express/managment studio express, then this product really won't help you.
   
   The tool let's you import 2000 databases into sqlsvr2005 or express, but you can't export to 2000. The Sql Svr management tool is the perfect way to administer your sql svr express databases too.
   
   Basically, the import->export feature is the reason to buy this.



2. Cost of MS SQLServer 2k5 Software: $50
   Cost of tech support to install MS SQLServer 2k5 on my new MS Vista laptop: $99.
   
   Success after 1 month: None.



3. SQL Server 2005 is pretty much the Microsoft standard for server based relational databases. I bought this product in conjunction with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 standard edition, and they are a good pair. If you are planning on doing any Windows Forms based programming, or web programming that requires relational databases then I recommend this product for testing on your own servers during development work.
   
   MySQL and similar are often used for third party web hosts; if you can do SQL with this server software, then you can probably do it with MySQL. This software, however, is for more enterprise level software and web design, and if you are a beginner, then sticking to MySQL is probably your best option.
   
   If you are new completely to relational databases, using Microsoft Access or similar can help you get familiar with the table, key, and relationship structure. Server side databases often times aren't as visual and can hamper learning for beginners.
