5 comments about Teach Yourself - CGI Programming in a Week.
- Although I do not have any Perl experience, I found this book just great to get understanding about CGI concepts and environment. I did not expect such a good book from SAMS. Must have!
- This was the second book I purchased in my quest to master Perl. The first being Perl and CGI For The World Wide Web, by Elizabeth Castro. I recommend that if you are a beginner start with something other than Teach Yourself - CGI Programming in a Week. Though not a total waste of money ( I have found it to be useful as a desktop reference. ) It will not be the last book you will ever need to purchase on your way to mastering Perl and the CGI protocol. On the bright side it does spend a fair amount of time discussing Server Side Includes, which come in handy when developing dynamic web applications. Finally, be prepared to purchase Programming Perl- by Larry Wall to truly master the language. GOOD LUCK
- This has begginer level content, although is too complex for any begginer. Only purchase this book if you already know C and Perl, and have no knowledge of CGI.
There are much better simple free tutorials online that could describe the basis of CGI.
- I went out and bought this book becuase I saw it and glansed at it and I liked what I saw. This book will take you threw all the basics in CGI. By the end of the seven days, I was programming all these awsome things in perl. Right now, just from the knowledge I aquired from this book I was able to create my own internet advertising company using over 10,000 lines of pure Perl code.
I feel this book will get you on your feet and get you doing the majority of the things you want to get done. I was a bit skeptacle about the whole "Sams" books and how everybody says they are crap and they have very bad editing and stuff. Well I went through this book, and there are a few misprints, but the book is still a very good and you will not be disappointed if you get this one, although if you want to get truly serious in CGI you will need to get a reference book in Perl or whatever language, but this will get you on your way making amazing and great usefull CGI programs. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 stars was because I felt this book would have been better if they made it a "Sams teach yourself CGI Programming in 21 days" instead of a shorter 7 day course. That way they could have taken many subjects into more depth, but besides that, it covers a lot (even SQL). I have read reviews on other sams books and many people say that sams is very bad. Well some were true, but this book from Sams is a great book and a must have.
- Although there are a lot of books about CGI, few seem to be any good. In my opinion, this one fits neatly in the lower end of the spectrum. This book is basically is a simplistic introduction, provided that you already know Perl. Almost all of the examples are written in Perl.
1/3rd of the book's content are appendices (MIME types, response codes, environment variables, and a CGI Perl Quick Reference). Still, it is a usable introduction to CGI with examples.

5 comments about Cgi Primer Plus for Windows: Learn to Create Interactive Web Pages.
- I borrowed the book from a friend and found it to be quite useful. As a beginning CGI programmer, I found the coverage of CGI basics to be be quite appropriate. Since the book was published in 1996, it does not cover fastCGI programming. Perhaps in a second edition?
- I liked the book when I first started cgi but once I learned cgi (from other sources and books) I never opened the book again. Its got examples and an attempt to teach you but it doesn't go into detail what each line of code does so you can have code there but no clue what you are doing with it. Now, I wouldn't even recommend it for starters. If you want some SIMPLE samples spend the money here or get it free of the internet. your choice.
- I like the concepts in the CGI Primer Plus for windows: I learned how to create an link generator, address book, email, and a survey interface using the book. The best feature about the 'CGI Primer Plus' is the number of applications in the book. The down side is the assumption the user knows Perl. I purchased the 'Perl 5 by Example Book'; read the first eight chapters, and dove into the 'CGI Primer Plus' book. The author's applications inspired to create numerous of my own applications. I'm very excited by the books value in terms of ideas and methods to apply perl. My wish list is to have a CGI book design for sybperl, Oracle, or Informix. Creating Database applications would be very valueable.
- CGI Primer Plus for Windows gives the reader an excellent overview of CGI, Perl and developing interactive web content. I was able to develop interactive CGIs after reading only a few chapters of this book. I would recommend this book and other books written by this author to everyone.
- The introductory chapters to the various CGI elements are very good even though written 3 - 1/2 years ago (thus previous to PerlEx). Some of the DOS screens needed a little introductory and conclusion text added to make them meaningful in context so I just penned it onto the particular book page. However, when dealing with the CGI complexities, e. g. , stateful programming, even though these are the most complex examples in the book, I kept looking for a different pedagogical approach that would make the examples in the book meaningful and relevant in context. I found that I had to re-write some of the example .pl scripts in that particular chapter to have them match the expected output printed in the text. Perhaps a second edition is overdue . . .

3 comments about 60 Minute Guide to Cgi Programming With Perl 5.
- This book was a quick tour of Perl. Well-written but has typos (and I had to figure these out with no prior knowledge of Perl!) and only a few of the examples I tried actually worked. I use it as a general Perl reference now but it is totally geared towards UNIX and we have a Novell webserver. Minimal help there. This book is primarily useful in that it's not overly intimidating like some other Perl primers. Just a so-so text for me but probably very useful if you plan to only work in UNIX.
- This book is good for individuals who have experience with HTML, UNIX, and some programming experience. It caters to people who have played a little with Perl programming, and want to learn more. It should be noted, however, that if you have no Perl experience, it will take much longer than 60 minutes to bring you up to speed.
- This 260 page book does what it needs... teaches you Perl from scratch and covers all the basic topics you need to write the scripts explained: write a web based clock, a basic page template parser (something that all programmers need to use more), processing forms (without using some large and slow 3rd party library), create a form based emailer webpage, a search engine, an app to grab other webpages to store them in a database and to search them, and finally a catalog/e-commerce script. This is a good starter book to go from nothing to intermediate programmer without feeling overwelmed with the material read.

2 comments about Cgi Bible (100% Series).
- If this is the bible, than I'm definitely a protestant. My major complaint about IDG Books' "CGI Bible" is that it tries to be all things to all people, covering far too many topics. From a beginner's point of view, that may not be a bad thing, but from someone somewhat fluent in Web page creation who just wants to get to the CGI "meat," there is just no need for such tangential coverage of HTML 3.2, SGML, DTDs, et cetera.
With a book on CGI, I want CGI, not whole sections on HTML validation tools. Thus, by the time the authors roll around to a discussion on CGI (and it comes across as a muddled discussion indeed), I discouragedly chucked the thing onto my (growing) pile of bad book investments. In addition, the bundled CD-ROM disc totally blows! It is about as poorly formatted and badly laid out as I've ever seen. Files are wholly unidentifiable--until you open them and try to find out what the program is. In overview, change the title to "Web Bible." If you're starting from the ground up, this book definitely touches base on everything one needs to know. But if you're looking solely for a CGI informatorium--take a pass. Either way, as a Web rookie or veteran, if you buy this book, be prepared to use the CD as a drink coaster. --W. Campbell, Encino, Calif., USA
This book is so poorly written, named, and editted, I actually lost faith in IDG Books as well as its authors. The book appears to be "Stuff I found on the web that I thought was cool". Any CGI information is hidden in between endless entries on HTML, SGML, how the web first came about, or whatever; punctuaited by countless URLs to "interesting" sites with CGI content. Unfortunately, I found many of these URLs to be outdated. Worse, much of the meagar information actually on CGI turned out to be factually incorrect. (see use of "+" and space in input encoding) All examples used in the book are in Perl. If you do not know Perl cold, and you intend to use this book as a learning tool, expect to spend a significant amount of time to studying that language. You will need to pick up a Perl primer as well since this book is not usefull as one. The CD was highly disappointing The information on it is limited, and the packages are difficult to unpack and use. My UNIX (Solaris 2.5.1) workstation could read the CD directories but could not actually access the files in them. I had to open the CD on my PC, FTP the files across the LAN to my UNIX workstation and then un-tar them there. Possibly the worst experience I had came when I sent a list of errors and issues to IDG Books and the authors. The response that I received from them unilaterally dismissed my concerns and was followed by a vague attempt to justify the original text. This book almost seems to be beefed up to pass the dreaded "weight test". If you are looking for a book to explain CGI in an organized and succint manner, run away from this book. This is the only book that has ever moved me to write to a publisher to ask for a refund. The only redeeming value of the book is that the CD is very shiny. 8-)
