- ... Some exercises assume math abilities and are hard to follow. New terms are introduced without definitions. Syntax is usually shown but without examples. Solution to exercises require knowledge of C++ not yet covered in the text. Better texts are available.
- The problems after every chapter are really good, you have to be smart to solve them, and it is a great pleasure. And the book is very clear.

1 comments about The C Standard: Incorporating Technical Corrigendum 1.
- I want to own a paper copy of this book; I have been programming in C for over fifteen years, and also reading and correcting other programmers' code. While I've got some good references on hand, sometimes when I come across some bizarre abuse of the language, there is just no substitute for the ANSI standard to help me understand why something is wrong.
Unfortunately, this is the content I want, but, like the C++ Standard book which also recently became available, the binding is one of the poorest I've ever seen in a hardback book. The cover is thin, there is no cloth in the binding, and the gluing is very flimsly. Just flipping through some pages in the bookstore, I was afraid they were going to start falling out. A sturdy well-bound paperback edition would be much more welcome than this flimsy hardcover.
This is inexcusable for a book that lists at $65 and for one that is designed as a reference. The standard is available for download for $18, although you won't get the extra introductions. You'd be better off downloading it, then taking it to a Kinko's or other print shop to have it printed on sturdy paper and bound with a coil. It won't be as pretty, and it might cost you just about as much, but it will certainly last longer.
I just can't bear paying so much for such a poorly made book. The C standard should be in the hands of every serious C programmer, and this is the only authorized edition, but I'm sure no one involved with the standardization effort "authorized" Wiley to rip off buyers with this flimsy, overpriced effort.

- Sory my bad English becose my ferst languige C++ and Spanish :).
Any book have errors but this book wonderful. I like Hackish C++ and recommend to read all C++ programmers.
I do not have any other review on Amizon. I'm lie? No. I'm just do not review every book.
- Full of ancient little code nuggets - like how to make a non-rectangular window in Windows. The author even calls MFC "cutting edge." Give me a break. MFC is barely being maintained any more - it might have been cutting edge 10 years ago. I'd suggest passing on this one - unless you want to feel like you're in a time-machine back to the C++ of the last century.
- The book offers an alternative viewpoint on programming C++ under Microsoft's operating systems. It deliberately eshews a sober tone, in presenting programming challenges. Like making a window of an arbitrary shape, like the profile of a person. We are so used to rectangular windows that this hack can be hilarious to try and show to others.
Flenov gives a chapter on networking hacks. Imagine writing a server that, with simple extensions, could reboot its machine upon prompt by an external signal that comes in over the net. Or the server might send out passwords, based on that signal. Such a program is malware; a Trojan. Now Flenov does not actually take you that far. But he shows enough that a capable reader could extrapolate the short steps to the Trojan.
- This is the definitive book on the early hackers, true hackers, and should be required reading for all those people. My regards and recomendations.
- Another useless book from the ill-famous Russian copy-paster.
1) Author is not an expert in anything he writes about. His level of knowledge is close to one of a sophomore.
2) Book was unprofessionally translated from Russian, it's hard to read.
3) Morale and legal aspects of many pranks and tricks are questionable for an educated and law-obeying reader.

2 comments about Beginners Guide to C.
- Out of every book on programing I've ever tried
including .Asm & .c this is the best. It will
teach you well and help you build great habits as
well. It also gave me a generally much greater
love of programing. How many books do that?
- The only thing that kept this book from rating five stars was it's lack of a function list\description section. An appendix to this end would've been nice. This book made learning 'C' quite easy.

3 comments about Understanding C++ for MFC (With CD-ROM).
- I am a CS student looking to do some GUI programing. The first 1/4 of the book is just basic brush up on simple c++ classes, strings, declaring variables, pointers, etc. Nice little refresher. Then it gets into pop up windows which was informative but very limited . Then the remander of the book is focused around one program that he wrote as an example but his descriptions are so vague it is dificult to apply it to your own program. The things done in the book can just as easily be done by following the MFC app wizard in visualc++ and then reading the MSDN library, save your money, or buy my copy used =)
- The one thing that you're not going to do at the end of this book is actually understanding MFC. It will give you a crash course in how to write an MFC program, and that's where it stops. Deeper understanding of how and why things work the way they work is not explained.
Most of the book is based on one example, so if you skip a chapter you're doomed because your sample project isn't up to date. I wouldn't recommend buying this book.
- It does a good job of introducing MFC with good but not many examples. If you know C++ programming and have experience with another GUI framework, this book will serve you very well to understand MFC quickly.

1 comments about ANSI C: A Lexical Guide.
- This book is really more of a reference for developers already familiar with C than an introduction to C. Even experienced C programmers will learn more about the language and the runtime library. It is very well written, easy to read, and provides excellent examples.

1 comments about Modern Compiler Implementation in C: Basic Techniques.
- This book provides a great overview of compiler-writing in general, with excellent discussions of issues like parsing, code generation, register allocation, and optimizations. This particular version (the C version) of the book, however, seems to contain a lot of typos in the code samples -- even without a compiler, I could see that most of them will not compile. If you can figure out what he meant, however, the algorithms are very sound.
