5 comments about MCSD Architectures Exam Cram (Exam: 70-100).
- Have the Transcender test exams at hand, because this book is *not* enough. Other than that, this book is quite good, organized, lists lots of topics and has good examples.
- I used a number of materials in preparing for the 70-100 exam, and found this to be the single most important book. The only thing this really lacked was practice on the "scenario-based" questions in the test, specifically the data-flow diagrams. But there was no other single book that came as close as this one to a complete working knowlege necessary for the test. Rather than buying multiple study guides, I would recommend purchasing this book and a practice test from either transcender or measureup.
Either way, if you don't have experience at defining requirements, nothing will help you.
- I passed the real exam on January 8, 2001 with an hour to spare and a comfortable passing margin. I used this and the Ezzel book, combined with the Transcender practice exam (which is your best friend here), as my study aids.
Although it doesn't have scenario-type questions in the form of those found on the real exam, this book still has plenty of condensed, easy-to-read, very pertinent material that will be of assistance in passing the real exam.
- Hey...if you're stuck on finding a great book as a major StudyGuide, then pick this one for help on MS 70-100!
Worked like a charm for me...AND...I keep the book close-at-hand when I plan a new app for a client! Great work and writing by Donald Brandt! Congrats! And if I tell you what exam I'm sitting for next, will you write me one for that one too! Jim
- I used this book and Transcenders, studied a total of 5 days and took the exam and passed on my first try! I took it on July 22, 2003. Other reviews for this book led me away from using any other book. I found it to be easy to read, especially if you've passed at least one other MCSD exam. The book presents important information and insight as to the testing methods of Microsoft for this test. Although this information is helpful to read, you'll still want to run through some exam simulation software in addition to this reading. Reading alone cannot prepare you for the types of interaction you'll face in the exam environment... so get Transcenders too.

2 comments about Absolute C++ CodeMate Enhanced Edition.
- I have been using Absolute C++ in my college Data Structures and Algorithms course for a couple of years now.
I searched long and hard for a good book on C++. This book has the clearest writing and has the best examples of any I reviewed. The author takes a C++ novice from no experience to advanced concepts in C++ without skipping steps. He also does the steps in the correct order. This is not true of all texts. I thought I had found a minor mistake in this book but when I wrote to Walter Savitch, I found that it was my error not his. The new Code Mate edition includes the .net IDE. This 6 CD set is expensive to purchase. If you want your students to use .net or if you want .net yourself, this book is a way to go. My students constantly compliment me on my choice of texts. I use it as the basis of a distance learning course. Those students never come to class and must rely primarily on the text. They do well with this text. Kenneth L Moore Associate Professor
- I have used the Absolute C++ text successfully for teaching OO/C++ as a second language at the undergraduate level and also for teaching introductory OO/C++ programming at the Masters level for several years. I consistently receive feedback from students that the textbook is a very high quality and is "a keeper".

2 comments about Unix C Shell Desk Reference.
- This book contains a lot of good information. I learned a great deal. However, it contains quite a few typographical errors which could have fooled me if I hadn't already had a basic knowledge of the C shell. It also uses typefaces which make it difficult to understand. For instance, the reader cannot distinguish the forward single quote (') from the backward single quote (`) in the typeface used throughout the book. This difference is critical given the context! It needs another printing after a lot of proofreading and reformatting.
- I've been using UNIX on and off for a couple of years, but didn't systematically learn the powerful C shell tricks. This little book just fits in for this task: truely a "learn it in 24 hours" type (if you have some experience) --- don't call it that name in the 2nd edition though! --- It also solved some of my mysteries about why certain commands are used in that way.
Overall this is a good book. It can save you a lot of time, both from learning C Shell AND from work in using C shell. One thing could be added: a summery of all the commands.

5 comments about C++ for You++, Standard Edition.
- The problem with the book is not with how much material it covers, but with how well it covers the material. Most good computer books that I have read have covered a topic and then gone to explain something step by step using examples and multiple scenarios, but I feel this book just gives a "it works because it does" attitude.
- I find the book does not explain the concepts in a straightforward manner. Further, it lacks enough examples to show how the concepts work. Without these, it is very difficult for me to learn. I plan to buy another text to teach myself as this book is totally inadequate.
I use the AP version of this textbook in AP Computer Science. The only way this version is different from the standard is that it includes explanations for a special set of AP classes.
- I recently purchased this book for a class at school and when i started to read it the first thing it does is launch you into hexidecimal to binary conversions. Then in chapter 2 the first example they give you is a program that takes up THREE pages at a small font. The program is a dictionary that reads from a file on the hardisk (a relitevely hard task in any langauge). And then makes what you type in translate to italian. They don't even consider that someone new to the langauge has no idea what COUT or CIN means.
- Just like this book is a complete waste of time to those who can't read a C++ book. My high school computer science class seemed able to comprehend this book and half of them (myself included) got a 5 on the AB Advanced Placement Computer Science Exam. Those who can't do a binary to hex conversion shouldn't be allowed to program a computer and should stick to their orange iMacs and pretty screen savers. Go learn some ZBASIC and get a coat hanger. SUCKERS!
- This book poorly explains the concepts needed to understand C++. It is advertised as an introductory book, however, this book will only be useful with one or more semesters of exerpience with C or C++. The books only saving grace is that if you are studying for the AP, this book uses the STL dirived AP classes that you will need to be familar with. If you arn't taking the comp sci AP there is no reason to even consider using this book.
