1. If you already know how to compile and link in a UNIX environment, this book will be an excellent place to start to learn Motif and CDE. If not, you may find some things a little confusing. The author assumes you already know some of the basics and so doesn't waste your time with review, but instead plunges right into the topic. I found this book helpful, but only after learning how to compile and link in UNIX.



2. The print is large, the pages of soft, and it's a great way to quickly learn about the most commonly used aspects of the Motif widget set. It's quick reading and the book lays out the information very systematically. However, before reading this book I thoroughly went through the first hundred pages of The Definitive Guides to the X Window System: Volume Four - X Toolkit Intrinsics Programming Manual Motif Edition. This book goes through each concept thoroughly (and agonisingly). However, it did give me a very solid foundation to build on. You should already have a basic understanding of GUI development and X before reading this book.

3 comments about Proceedings of the 1999 Congress on Evolutionary Computation: Cec99 : July 6-9, 1999 Mayflower Hotel Washington, D.C. USA.

1. I was very disappointed of this large collection of papers. Although there are a few gems, most of the papers are of very marginal quality. There are many papers with little "improvements" that are not well tested (heard of statistical tests?), and many papers are not well written. People should proofread their work carefully to make sure that others will get the message.

   Spend your money elsewhere: There are many good conferences in this area (search for the previous proceedings of evolutionary programming (EP) and the international conference on genetic algorithms).




2. This 3-volume set of proceedings from the first Congress on Evolutionary Computation is a superb contribution and a must for anyone interested in evolutionary computation. Particularly nice was the focus on topics rather than techniques! The quality of papers was above average and many papers point to new research directions. Good stuff.



3. 3 years after this conference, I'm still using it for reference. I especially like the particle swarm papers, and the evolutionary computation theory papers (many of them). This 3-vol. set is very good.
