  1. This being my first programming book after learning GWBASIC, I found this book to be very well written considering the size of the book. If you just don't have much time to spend learning QBasic, this book takes you on a Crash Course(surprise) through the fundamentals of the language with plenty of examples demonstrating the topic effectively. I STRONGLY recommend this book if you want to learn QBASIC.

  2. Even if you've never programmed before "Crash Course in Q Basic" offers a no-frills quick introduction into this easy programming language. Take it one step at a time and soon you'll be writing simple programs. By the end of the book you'll have a good knowledge of the language and be able to write moderately complex programs. I teach basic programming to beginners and recommend this book as an excellent reference.

  3. I bought a 486 IBM laptop in the mid-early 90s. And, since it came with QBasic installed, I decide I ought to learn how to use QBasic. Because I had good luck with Greg Perry's other books, I purchased this book as well. Greg in a concise and pleasant style went through the basic syntax of the QBasic programming language.

Too bad QBasic doesn't compile like C or C++. That probably killed QBasic's popularity. The book marched me right on through and made the topic easy to understand. I feel it will do the same for you, that is if you still have a use for QBasic.

  1. The author of this book speaks from his worldwide experience with the .NET framework and E-commerce. He takes lectures and conducts seminars throughout the world and disperses his knowledge freely to those he teaches. I was fortunate to be present for one of his courses in Auckland, New Zealand and the information I have received at that 6-day seminar, as backed up in his book is currently enabling me to better my career in IT by providing me with an extra edge to my technical skill set. Great book! I highly recommend you read it.

  2. This is a well structured text with a blend of tutorial, informational, quiz and project material.
It suffers, however, from a large number of errors (the companion web site lists 7 A4 pages of errors for the 2nd printing - Errata) and the use of 'old style' constructs MsgBox and not MessageBox.Show; Instr and not .Substring; UCase() and not .ToUpper etc.
Unfortunately, the comprehensive style and content of the text is affected by the above.
It looks like a book, based on a VB6 offering, that was rushed out to meet the .Net market.
An update to the existing content with newer style constructs and some effective proof reading would make it an excellent text.

  3. This was the textbook for a beginning VB class I'm enrolled in. I have never seen a worse textbook in my life. It jumps all over, changes topics frequently and gives terrible examples. Most computer textbooks have a "case" that you follow throughout the book, adding to the project as you learn. Although there is a case followed throughout the book, in each chapter he invents a new case to show examples and then only uses part of the chapter material in the main case. The result is very disjointed information. In the beginning, he displays all new code used in that chapter together in one spot but he stops doing this halfway through the book. I spent more time thumbing back and forth in the book trying to find information I needed than I spent writing code. Looking in the glossary tells it all; look at validation and you'll be referred to 4 different chapters. Not to mention all the typos. Do not buy this book to use in a classroom, it's a mess.

  1. This book was helpful when I took a semester-long course on Visual Basic. I used it while doing the homework assignments. Used it mostly for specific examples and to clarify details in the primary course workbook (particularly when my 25+ years of COBOL thinking kept me from comprehending the VB way to do things). The index and table of contents were adequate for searching for examples and explanations.

  1. I suspect that those who are whining about this training kit are missing the main point of the Microsoft Certification program - DEMONSTRATE YOUR EXPERTISE. You can't become an expert by studying a book and working through a few exercises. This book is essentially a very good guide book that points you in the right direction. I used this book and then followed up on each topic by digging into the on Programmer's reference for VB6 that comes with the product. I passed the test yesterday on the first attempt after 2 weeks of evening study. You want to pass this exam? Use the book, follow up in the online manuals, and work through a small VB6 client server project, including deployment. You will pass.

You do not need a bunch of fancy, expensive sample testing products. I did not take a single practice test other than the one that came with the book.

  2. I want to recommend that this book provide not enough information you need to read 70-175 by the same publisher (this will help you ) and still get 60%. A lots of questions in the real exam not in this book and please prepare to select 2 answers at the same time i.e. in some case this book provide you only 1 answers for solutions but in the real exam they need 2 answers : In some quetions you need to answer as Create Symbolic debug info but they will ask you to check 2 answers. What you will answer? All the books just tell you about 1 answers, please be prepared.

  3. The book covers about 70% of the exam. Its coverage of VSS, VCM and Package and Deployment Wizard are very superficial. These topics are very important in the exams (PDW has 10 to 15 questions) and can make the difference between pass the exam or not. The coverage of COM is good but incompleted. If you use only this book you need good experience in Client/Server applications. I used this book for some basic material and, the best of all, MCSD in a Nutshell by James Foxall (good coverage of PDW, VSS, VCM and COM). This last was my main guide to pass the exam. I agree with other reviewers: this exam isn't for beginners, you need at least two intensive years of experience building real applications to catch some questions. Without it, this book -any book- can help.

  4. I am a software programer for this reason it is necessary to reads some book at v.b.6.I also want to pass mcsd tract. So I want to reads some book v.b.6

  5. This book had great labs to help you get some hands-on experience, but is lacking GREATLY in test sensitive material. I got MCSD In A Nutshell from Oreilly Press. I passed the test with an 857. This book did very little to help me achieve that goal. MCSD In A Nutshell + Transender Exams = You Pass

  1. I consider this book to be a lucky find for me. It is one of those uncommon books that explains things very well, starts from basics, and works its way up through more advanced and very practical and useful subjects. I originally got this book just because it was the only one I could find that covered serial-port communications for Visual Basic. Since then (having done a lot of programming in Visual Basic and having looked through many, many other books of various sorts), I find that it's one of the best books I could have chosen for learning about Visual Basic in general. It got me up to speed on several topics (pictureboxes, file I/O, writing database front ends, the basics of ActiveX, just to name a few things). I heartily recommend this book for beginners through advanced intermediates -- and for folks who already have programmed a lot in other languages and are looking to broaden out into Visual Basic.

  2. I bought this book by accident thinking it was something else and I've never put it down since. It covers all the major points I wanted to learn and more. I read this before taking the MSCE training course. After reading the first 6 chapters I found I had covered the first 4 days of the 5 day VB course.

I recommend this book for all begining VB programmers even if you want to start using VB6, read this book first for all your ground work.

  3. I would just like to say , that this book has been a real asset , in learning and developing my VB skills. - Couldn't put it down !!

  4. I like this book because this book takes the user from begining to expertise.

  5. This is an excellent VB Book. I constantly turn to it for code samples and commands when in need. It contains almost all the common VB Commands. Aside from that, each chapter is a lesson in itself.
