2 comments about Developing Tablet PC Applications (Programming Series).
- I guess I was expecting something dedicated to the Tablet PC like Jarrett & Su's "Building Tablet PC Appl." -- just more in-depth, since this book was so much delayed. What I seem to have is an intermediate level book on Programming for XP, with some chapters on programming for the Tablet PC. It does cover a number of interesting topics specific to more recent Windows platforms. And the writing style seems to be easy to read through.
- Developing Tablet PC Applications by computer expert and professional Clayton E. Crooks is a self-teaching tool for specifically for programmers seeking to create their own applications for the exciting new Tablet PC. This is a new development which blends the usefulness of notebook computing technologies with the raw power of Windows XP. Sample code and source projects (both in the text and on an included CD-ROM), illustrate this instructive text which is replete with examples that anyone can use to build upon. Developing Tablet PC Applications is a very worthwhile addition to any Tablet PC programmer's personal or professional reference library.

5 comments about Beginning Visual Basic 5.
- This is one of the best Beginner's Teach Yourself type books on a programming language that I've ever read. It's pitched at just the right level for an absolute beginner but at the same time the author manages not to be patronizing. I like the chatty style, and the way only one new concept at a time is introduced so that I wasn't overwhelmed by too much new information at once. I found I could just about read straight through the book without having to flip back and forth looking up things I'd forgotten or didn't understand.
Although this is not supposed to be a complete reference to the language, it could do with a fuller index. It's a great way to get to grips with the basics (pardon the pun) of the language. I'd recommend it as a means of understanding this sort of event-driven language, particularly for programmers who are familiar with only 'non-visual' languages such as Pascal, C, etc. You'll also need a more comprehensive guide and/or reference manual to become fully conversant in the language.
- Many errors were not on the publisher's site. If you are going to write a book, please make sure the code works. Try using it! Am I being unreasonable?
- I'm in a class which uses this book as it's primary text. We have problems in some of the code exercises. Some of the code in the book just doesn't work and it gets really aggrivating dealing with it. Additionally, features and functions are incorporated without first explaining them to the reader. Overall this is not a very good book to learn from. I personally had to purchase additional materials to better learn the material.
- This is a great book for beginners. I found Peter Wright's easy going style of writing to be refreshing. This book covers a bit more ground than most "beginner books" therefore you will gain a solid understanding of the language.
- This is the perfect book for self-study and for anyone interested in learning vb with little or no programming experience. The author introduces us to the fundamental concepts of vb and hand guide us to implementing useful vb applications without overwhelming readers with too much information at one time. each concept, each section is written with extreme clarity and gently eases readers to the world of vb. by the end of the book, readers are ready to creating powerful vb applications with a solid understanding of the vb language.Beginning Visual Basic 5 is without a doubt, *the* best introductory book to learning vb. you might want to get Core Visual Basic 5 as your second book for more advanced coverage. good luck!

5 comments about Database Programming with Visual Basic .NET.
- Been through a great number of ADO.NET books, but this is the only one so far that really covers everything I need. Not only does this book cover ADO.NET very well, including the exceptional tables in the appendixes but it also gives me msmq and sqlxml and thats good value. The authors writing style is conscise and accurate and not too dry nor does he fill the book with stupid remarks like some other authors.
- Although this is a somewhat old book, ie. it covers 1.0 of the framework its still an excellent book about many types of data access with .net, especially ado.net. I can recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn ado.net
- Very detailed book and extremely neat and tidy writing. Not so much more to add other than this is a great way of getting to know ADO.net and otehr database technologies and techniques.
- This is one of the better books I've read on the subject of database programming and in particular using the .Net framework. It starts off in a slow pace explaining the details of disconnected database programming and then chapter by chapter it explains how to work with ADO.net and it then rounds off with some 'extras' in teh form of SQLXML and Exchange Server connectivity. Really good book.
- A simple yet detailed book written by a very talented writer. I read the first edition and the second edition is by far a much better book, in particular in the way the material is presented. It does look as if the author needed some experience with the first book to really write some good stuff and he certainly delivers with the second book. I hope he'll do third with the new whidbey stuff coming out.
My favorite chapter is 19 and if you need a book that teaches you about database programming with VB .net and ADO.netb then this book is for you.

1 comments about Programming and Problem Solving with Visual Basic .NET.
- This one of the best books I 've read on VB.NET among many.
It has a lot of merits but the one that sets this apart is that it views VB.NET in the general context of programming and programming practices. It does not stay only to the particulars of the language but also uncovers the theoretical foundations upon which these particulars lay. And it does this in a very gentle way that not only won't intimidate you but will help you get a deeper sense of what you do very smoothly. And although I had already read a dozen of books on VB.NET there were a lot of things I learned from this book. For example, how variables are stored in memory and what that means to programming. This book is for beginner-intermediate programmers.

3 comments about Crash Course in Qbasic.
- This being my first programming book after learning GWBASIC,
I found this book to be very well written considering the
size of the book. If you just don't have much time to spend
learning QBasic, this book takes you on a Crash Course(surprise)
through the fundamentals of the language with plenty of
examples demonstrating the topic effectively.
I STRONGLY recommend this book if you want to learn QBASIC.
- Even if you've never programmed before "Crash Course in Q Basic" offers a no-frills quick introduction into this easy programming language. Take it one step at a time and soon you'll be writing simple programs. By the end of the book you'll have a good knowledge of the language and be able to write moderately complex programs. I teach basic programming to beginners and recommend this book as an excellent reference.
- I bought a 486 IBM laptop in the mid-early 90s. And, since it came with QBasic installed, I decide I ought to learn how to use QBasic. Because I had good luck with Greg Perry's other books, I purchased this book as well. Greg in a concise and pleasant style went through the basic syntax of the QBasic programming language.
Too bad QBasic doesn't compile like C or C++. That probably killed QBasic's popularity. The book marched me right on through and made the topic easy to understand. I feel it will do the same for you, that is if you still have a use for QBasic.

2 comments about Visual Basic for Network Applications.
- This book just touches a little bit on different network area. Typically, it just tells you to use 3rd party controls for TCP/IP, NetBIOS, etc. Cover some windows API on network side which you can find better material elsewhere(like on the web) I browsed it once and I don't know when I will open that book again.
- I bought this book some time ago, along with Dan Appleman's API book for VB (the 16-bit book, I believe no longer available). This book is rather thin, but decent content.
This book touches on the common APIs for network connections, such as WNetAddConnection. Great beginning for network apps where you want to connect network shares (\\server\service) to drive letters. (I even suggested this book on SourceVault). The only thing I didn't like was that most of the functions were 16-bit, not the Win32 calls. HOWEVER, not many other books cover networking APIs (aside from buying an MSDN subscription from Microsoft)! FYI - I know that the prior verison of Dan Appleman's VB Win32 API guide (white cover) also does not contain any "WNET" functions.

5 comments about Visual Basic Graphics Programming.
- This book covers everything u ever wanted to know about Graphics Programming (especially in VB) for Windows. Don't spend time learning DirectX. If u want to be a pro windows programmer - get this book! I been looking for something like this for years, and I really feel this is the best book about Windows Graphics Programming ever written!
- I'm a developer in development company and one of the languages I using it is the : VBx language. I searched for all VB source code in the internet, that teaching the graphics techniques, but no way, then I found this book it's very good, covering all subject that you want to know, specially the mathematical formula, which is unavailable for programmers in one book, C programmers will not have peace now in multimedia field.
But I have two comments about this book : 1- All examples in the book are not designed to support the JPEG,GIF image format, when the book work in VB5 . 2- Some examples not working and giving this message "This monitor does not support palettes.". But again I can say thank you and I'm happy to have this book in my computer library.
- This is a very good programming book, especially in teaching graphics techniques. It starts out a little over simplified, but eventually it evolves. The first few chapters you build a simple graphical applications. Then luckily you start over with a more organize application.
Rod Stephens has a great style of teaching and this is only the first book I bought by him three years ago. All his other books are very useful. However as another critic here said the code it not in ready to run form for other applications. If you are an apt student and programmer the conversion is not difficult. This is a teaching book, building complex class function libraries was not it's goal. You will have tons of fun with this book and all his others.
- This is a good book for anyone with some knowledge about Visual Basic who wants to know how to make better graphics in the language. It starts off with the basics--lines, API functions, etc. Later, it has sections on more complex topics, such as ray tracing and higher-dimensional graphics.
- This book includes a lot of ideas and concepts that extremely serve graphics programmers. I really found this book very useful, and it gave me new ideas that enhanced my way in programming. Besides it gives the reader full illustration for some problems in descriptive geometry and numerical analysis. REALLY Well-done Rod! Adel
