5 comments about VBA Programming for Microsoft Office Project Versions 98 through 2007 (Emp Learning).
- What I like most about this book is there is something for everyone. The code examples are great for learning the tool. More experienced developers will put their minds to work and morph the examples into all sorts of useful and more robust applications.
I go fishing for hints in the book almost daily when I am trying to get things done in Project via VBA.
Since the approach Rod uses is "modular" it is very easy to expand and combine the knowledge. Beginning users can work at their own pace, more advanced users have a Microsoft Project Specific reference and hint book.
This type of work was long over due and I'm glad I found the book; it will be a treasure. No way a shelf queen, this book is being used and recommended to many of my friends.
- The book is a great reference guide of MS Project VBA Programming. Rod, the author is well known in the MS Project comunity and a Project MVP, which makes him the most qualified person to write this book. If you are a VBA starter or an advanced user, you will get very good usage out of the book.
- Didn't learn much new stuff. Most is out on the Web but it is nice to have it in one place. I like the book format, good for older coders like me who's eyes aren't like they used to be.
The index is limited/sparce. Wish it had an appendix with the full MSP Object Model and other MSP specific references.
Great start, just want more...
- This book did enable me, a excel vba developer, to become able to develop VBA for Microsoft Project.
It explore the integration between excel and vba as well.
- I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book. I'm an experienced amateur at VBA and have learned several useful new techniques.
The book is pretty well written, clear, with nicely worked out examples, and good explanations of why you would do something in the recommended way. Wish i'd bought it a year or two ago.

5 comments about Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Step by Step--Version 2003 (Step By Step (Microsoft)).
- I am a programming virgin and wanted to learn VISUAL BASIC.NET. I first purchased VB.NET programming for the absolute beginner and the SAMs Teach yourself VB.NET in 24h. These two books were good (SAMs Teach yourself VB.NET in 24h was better) but both emphasized typing in code rather than understanding the code. The explanations seemed lacking in comparison with the Microsoft VB.NET Step by Step book. The Step by Step book actually explained the code in better detail. I also found this book easy to follow and understand. This book was great.
- As a casual programmer in VB I thought this book was good as a refresher for VB and a stepping stone into VB.Net. It is not a book for experienced VB programmers wanting to learn VB.Net. A lot of the examples are strictly VB while telling you some of the differences in VB.Net. Bottom line: If you are experienced in VB do not buy this book. If you are Mr. Joe Blow, "I program once in a while in VB, and need a refresher course, and I want to delve into VB.Net", by all means buy this book.
- How many times do you have to read that, in order to create a menu item you have to
Press down the arrow key
......
and then
Press down the arrow key
....
and then
Press down the arrow key
??!! the author can fill pages and pages with this kind of "step by step" instruction. It's not a matter of being new or not to VB .NET, it's a matter of expecting the author to assume that the reader has some common sense. Avoid this book!
- This book is great to get your feet wet in VB.NET because it has great tutorials on how to do the basic things in VB. The teaching style is pretty good keeping a good pace through-out the book and almost every single explanation is very well written. Also, all code examples worked for me.
The problem that I have with this book is that it fails to introduce the reader to the big picture. This book will show you how to do all this handy-dandy stuff and after reading it, you will easily be able to build your own applications but you wont have a true understanding of VB.NET. You won't have a clue how all of it works together wich will put a demper in your coding abilities. I would only recomend this book if you buy it along with another book such as; [...]
- I have used several books to learn Visual Basic and have used it in writing programs. This book was a real treat. It filled in many gaps that were left by other books and even by college course work. The book is very clear and easy to use. The author goes step-by-step, teaching concepts and working through examples. There are sample programs included on CD or to download to make the process hands-on and understandable. I highly recommend it.

5 comments about VB and VBA in a Nutshell: The Languages.
- I have only just started to learn about VB and VBA and as an absolute beginner, I found so far at any rate, this book very easy to absorb and understand. It also gioves a good depth of what VB and VBA is all about. My work has taken me away from home (and frm my computer) for many weeks but the book always goes with me and I am very pleased to have purchased it. I would suggest it is very good for anyone else wishing to consider buying it for the knowledge and style of how the author imparts that knowledge.
- Well, although there are still many zealous VB 6.0 coders out there, we all know the former language has been superseded by VB.NET, which is basically completely unrelated whatsoever to VB 6.0.
With that being said, I don't plan on becoming a VB coder anyhow, and don't do a lot of programming Web applications anyway. However, there is A LOT that can be accomplished in the Visual Basic language and I find learning VB as a really nice leisure time in between classes, learning hardcore material, or just wanting to enter new territory.
For anyone else who reviews this, please recognize what this book is (and perhaps what it is not): this is a "NUTSHELL" title -- It is not meant to be a defintive tutorial. In fact, the author blatantly states in the preface that the people who will get the most out of this book are those who already have knowledge of VB and are looking for something to refresh their memories or use as a desktop reference.
Now the latter phrase, desktop reference, is exactly what this book is. While the book can be divided into an 'explanation' section and a 'reference' section, the explanations are NOT complete, and are really just broad overviews of the particular subjects a section covers.
I know: I mentioned that I wasn't a VB coder (although I'm not a novice either), and yes, I purchased this book knowing this. I don't recommend this approach for everyone, but this works for me. I've learned a lot from this reference, and I'm able to implement a lot of what I've read. The reference section is excellent. So yes, I've used this as a "bootleg textbook".
Other than the fact that good books on VB 6.0 are a little hard to come by nowadays (everything's VB.NET), this is a good start for someone who doesn't want their hands held the whole way and are okay with starting off "in the middle of nowhere" and trekking through unknown territory. One of O'Reilly's best.
- It's hard to believe that this book was originally published in 1998. I can't think of any VB programmer I've met that did not have one of these on their desk. This book is meant to be used like a dictionary for VB and VBA. The format is brilliant and the concepts in it are as valid today as they were in 1998.
- this comes in very handy if you are developing with vb/vba on a daily basis. much quicker than using the mostly confusing and badly organized MSDN online references...
- If you have an understanding of VB and need a good reference book, this is it. It will save a lot of the time & frustration experienced when searching with MSDN.

5 comments about Pro VB 2005 and the .NET 2.0 Platform, Second Edition (Pro).
- This book covers what programmers need to know. The pillars of OOP are presented and clear examples are shown.
I refer to this book often because it gets to the "meat" of things rather quickly and is not for beginners.
My only criticism is that this book's examples are 90% console applications. Nobody uses this in the real world. But I understand the focus is on the code, but I still like the Deitel approach better. Use Windows applications NOT console, take the time to get the screen shots. (Just my opinion).
Don't get me wrong, I can easily translate over what he is trying to convey, but still I see great authors such as Francesco Balena showing most examples with the console window. I don't like this trend. But hey that's me.
Very good book though..
- This is best VB.NET I ever had. This book explains OO concept very clearly with easy to understand examples. I am still in middle of the book. So eager to finish till end. Waiting to read more books from this writer. Thanks for Excellant Work.
- If you are looking for a Visual Basic book that covers a lot more than books like Wei-Meng Lee's Visual Basic 2005 Jumpstart than this book should be at the top of your list. As well as the basics this book is very good at explaining advanced concepts like Interfaces, IEnumerable Types, Generics, Asynchronous Delegates, and Multithreaded Applications. The author has an excellent writing style. He stays on track, does an excellent job at expaining complex concepts, and provides a lot of hints about how the topic he is writing about now is related to the big picture. Apress should also be commended for the graphical layout of the book. It is very easy to find information on a particular topic in this book as all of the book is divided into clearly labeled short sections.
- This book covers just about everything: The .NET platform; VB language fundamentals; OOP; Assemblies and classes. In each chapter the author gives a simplified example and then progresses thru to a complete module. He explains each step in detail and give many of the most-likely errors.
This is not novices. The author expects some level of programming experience with VB, C, C++ being the best. It is also best for a Visual Studio 2005 environment, though it is not required. If this is you and you are looking to move to VB.NET, this book is absolutely for you.
- I have read several books on this topic, but this book was very structured wich made it easy to follow. It gave a very clear explaination on both base- and advanced OOP programming concepts. Many things I'v not read anywhere else and many times I yelled 'AHA!' and 'WOW!'. Yes, it was great fun to work trough all the 'Fun with...' examples.
I really can recommend this book, however NOT if you are a beginner!
I also learned that I'm a Generic Type, because I drink a lot Of T. :)

5 comments about MCAD/MCSD Self-Paced Training Kit: Developing Windows®-Based Applications with Microsoft® Visual Basic® .NET and Microsoft Visual C#® .NET, Second Ed (Pro-Certification).
- I think that there are more interesting books about C# and MCP Certification.
The negative points of this books are:
- Are missing a lot of details of the .NET technology
- The sample codes are not complete, only show portions
- It is not enough to take an MCP test
Positive points are:
- It is a great book for introducing the .NET technology
- Contains a lot a sample questions oriented to take the MCP test
As a summary of the .NET technology, it is great!
- I'd just like to say something. I finished reading this book from the very beginning a week ago to the very end this morning, and passed the exam with a score of 940 this afternoon. I don't know any other exam prep book for the same exam.
- Admittedly, the book is pretty shallow: it even teaches you what class/construstor/destructor/inheritance/etc are. To an old day VB'er unfamiliar with .NET/OOP stuff, or to any .NET beginner, this might be nice. But to most, especially to those specilized in C# (very likely also in C++), or to whoever is about to take an exam towards a certified developer, this is not necessary at all. I wish the book had covered some really advanced topics and/or gone deeper on existing topics.
- As for the exam, my personal opinion is that this book should be enough, as long as you also get some hands-on experience by actually messing around with .NET desktop apps for a while. Deskop apps are not my strong area and I rarely develop apps using .NET Windows Forms. But the book helped me with all the questions on the actual exam about desktop apps so I could pass the exam with ease. Without the book I doubt I could get the passing score of 700. A similar book might also help me that much, but I only needed one and this one was what I used.
- I'm not giving the book 5-star because this is going to be a useless book once read or once you passed the exam. I'm also not giving the book 3-star or lower because this is a well-written book after all, and with some hands-on experience, you should have little trouble passing the exam if you fully understand what the book tries to tell you.
- This book has some highlights, but it is tightly authored to the VS.NET version it comes bundled with. Some folks will find this a bonanza, but that's only if you're willing to rubber-stamp your exam. There's abundance of Wizard code specific to VS.NET 2003 version. I am working with VC# Express 2005 and many of the things are N/A in this environment. ... anyway, I could sort my way out by looking at the samples and learn that what used to be a Control is nothing more than a Class that derives from Controls and some additional boilerplate.
To make things worst, this book assumes you will be using Wizards and dispenses any explanation on why / how things work.
In addition to all the above, by 11/2005 standards the book itself is dated as C# does include now support for generics, which is not present in this book.
I still do give it a 3 just because I like some of the stuff, and it simplifies a couple of learning points.
BTW: A good POV on using Wizards is here -->

5 comments about Microsoft Office Project 2003 Bible.
- Most of the material is straight from the online help. Download for free and read the Online books associated with installing and administering Project Server 2003 before you spend any $ on a book.
- I'm an engineer who uses Project in my work and this book has been a great help. Every time I've had a problem getting the software to do what I wanted this book has provided a clear and consise explanation that helped me get through the problem. I'd recommend it to anyone who uses Project for major projects and doesn't have time to waste finding an answer on how to get the software to do what you want it to.
- Beware, the book may be good, I just start reading it, but I can't look at the examples from the "accompanying cd" because Amazon hasn't made it available to me. I've written them 3 times and still no answer. Buy this book from the bookstore. Also, this ebook is very restrictive. I don't know if I can view it from other computers and it only allows me to copy 10 selections in 7 days, after that no more cutting and pasting.....beware of the limitations. I give this 1 star, not for content but for delivery and restrictions. spearsjunk@hotmail.com
- Got the book in just of few days and in great condition. Only gotten through about a third of the book so far. Lots of information and very useful to increase my job skills. Just find it somewhat diffucult to relate to if you don't have the software to work with while reading. Reading at home and have the software at work.
- I have the Excel Bibble, Access Bible, and now the Project Bible. The books are very thorough and easy to understand. These books are much more detailed than the "Books for Dummies". I have had these books for some time now and still use the books for reference.

5 comments about Programming Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Version 2003 (Pro Developer).
- This was the first .NET book I purchased, and in many ways if I hadn't bought any others it would have been sufficient. It has thorough coverage of the .NET environment, with lucid code examples in VB.NET. I found the chapters on ADO.NET and the framework internals to be most useful to my job as an ASP.NET developer, but the coverage is deep enough that a person with very little programming experience could read this book and come away as a well-rounded .NET programmer. Even if you're writing in C#, as I am, the book is worth the money. I would also recommend Dino Esposito's Programming Microsoft ASP.NET for more depth if you're a web developer.
- I bought this book few years. It is an excelent source of information and writers style is very clear. I just came back to see if Balena has book for C# 2005. Looks like I found something. I am going get that one. However, present book is quite good, check if there is a newer release you may want to get that one.
- Fast service, great quality... What more can you ask for. I recommend this seller.
- There is a lot of information in this book, covering a broad range of subjects. It is well laid out and easy to reference. The CD comes with the current version of the book as well as the author's previous book on VB6. Not really a beginner's book as there are more intermediate and advanced topics. I had not used .NET and hadn't touched VB6 in a couple of years. I needed a resource to help jump from rusty VB6 skills to .NET - this book did it perfectly. It is also filled with advanced topics that I am not currently using but now know where to go when the need arrives.
- I am an experienced developer but fairly new to VB.NET. This book is not for beginners but it is great for someone like myself who knows what they want to do and just wants some good examples and tips. It's a great reference book and a good alterative to Google. The English is clear and to the point. The book is a sturdy hardback and the pages are well laid out. It's easy to read afters hous of staring at a screen. To sum up, I'm glad that I brought it. It has saved me time and money and you can't ask for much more than that :-)

5 comments about Build Your Own ASP.NET 2.0 Web Site Using C# & VB.
- Examples, insights, and even code samples pack a reference for programmers working in C# and VB in an updated second edition to a popular step-by-step guide. Here's all the information you need to get up and running with ASP.NET, from how to build a first web site to applying the free code samples within to more advanced projects. It's a top pick programmers - especially newcomers to ASP.NET - won't want to be without.
- The Book overall is good, but there are some mis-types in the code that, if you follow along, will screw you up. Its also vague about some things, but if you have some basic knowledge of visual studio and/or asp, it is a good reinforcement.
- I am an asp programmer. And I would like to transform myself into asp.net. after trying one title after another by reading the PDF files that I found on the net, I thought I found the right book ASP.NET 2.0 Unleashed from Stephen Walther. I bought the book and learned from it. But I got stuck somewhere after the basic controls. The author assumes that the reader is either intermediate or advanced level with the .NET programming skill. I am not at that level yet. Again I went back to find other PDF files and I found this one and I knew this was the perfect fit for me. I bought the book and I am very happy with this book. it teaches asp.net 2.0 from beginning level. It explains in details all the basic knowleges that an asp.net programmer needs to know. Then it moves on to ado.net. But all these are just basics only. not going too far into advanced level. One thing that I like is that I build the project while learning. There are minor wording error. If you don't know programming, then this is the problem. If you already know programming (VB,C#), then you can see the wording error and correct yourself.
If you are looking for a book that set you up from start with .NET, this one is the right one. If you already have the basic of asp.net and would like to get to the advanced level, then you may be disappointed.
- i got into dot net when it first came out, when sample codes on how do things you take for granted were scarce or non existent. I was converting an ASP app to dot net. was ahead of my time, ran into too many mundane issues, cancelled my project after 5 months. Now I want to try ASP.NET for real.
I've found this book to be very helpful in connecting the dots. The samples are good enough . Highly recommend it.
- I have read many technical books and this is so far the best. I know my way around computers and the basics of programming and wanted to learn some more of ASP.NET. This book has been an excellent tutorial. Even the basics of object oriented programming and SQL are explained. Loved it.
There is one caveat. The book was written for Windows XP and IIS 6. If you are using Windows Vista and IIS 7 like me, be prepared to search for some stuff yourself. Do not worry though, some Googling will help you along the way.

5 comments about Mastering VBA (Mastering).
- Thank you for finally publishing a book that all of us can use to learn VBA!!!
- I bought this book because I was going to develop some tools to make things a little easier around the office. It has helped me tremendously, the sections on Excel and Word I found especially helpful. However, the access portion has much to be desired. For instance, First paragraph in chapter 29 on Manipulating the Data in an Access Database via VBA: (paraphrased) Data can be modified from either Access or another VBA-enabled application. This chapter shows you how to work from another VBA-enabled application.
Well what if I wanted to learn how to modify an Access db from Access! Ok maybe Access deserves a whole book to itself, but still it would have been nice if the book elaborated a little on Access VB objects.
- I only had to scan the table of contents to realize that this product is not the "end-all" for VBA programming needs. The few dozen or so pages dedicated the MS Access are clearly nowhere near what is needed to leverage VBA capability for the program where it is most valuable: Access!
Database programmers - look elsewhere.
- This book is an absolute page turner! Hemingway, Dumas? These witers are hacks compared to the prose of these accomplished writers. A must read!
- Mastering VBA (Mastering)
I have only just started to use this book to learn VBA.
It is clear and concise and structured to lead a novice from basic macros through to more complex VBA scripting.
The examples and lessons cover Word, Excel and Powerpoint at the same time showing any differences between the programs.
It is well worth a look for people who use these packages but have not yet dabbled in VBA.
