  1. This book, "T/S 2068 Basic and Beyond" by Sharon Zardetto Aker, covers BASIC only. Although with a title like "and beyond" you might expect some machine language coding, you will not find any within these pages at all. Also, there are no long programs in this book. If you are looking for some then you will have to look elsewhere. This book DOES have plenty of example code, but there is no last chapter with a program to help you pull it all together.

The Table of Contents is broken down very well (and covers seven pages!). Here is a list of the chapters (without all of the extra details that are covered the book):

    Chapter 1 - Basics Plus
    Chapter 2 - Numbers
    Chapter 3 - Strings
    Chapter 4 - Techniques
    Chapter 5 - Graphics
    Chapter 6 - Functions
    Chapter 7 - More Graphics
Chapter 8 - Truth and Logic
    Chapter 9 - Sound
Chapter 10 - Peek and Poke
    Chapter 11 - More Techniques
    Chapter 12 - Annotated Programs
    Appendix A - Character Codes
Appendix B - Defined Graphics Data
    Appendix C - Sound
    Index

If you have the T/S 2068 User Manual, then much of this material is already covered. This book does go more in-depth (as the "beyond" title suggests), but it never seems to pull everything together into a cohesive whole. On the plus side, the program listings are easy to read and the text is easy to follow.

If you don't understand the two SAM guides, then this book is probably for you, as it starts off easy and builds up, one BASIC keyword at a time.

  1. Ignoring the editing errors, I learned a great deal. I was really nervous with picking a programming language book, and the VBA book made learning programming easy. I hope that they can get past the major typo's in the next edition.

  2. I want to personally apologize for the errors in the text. My publisher (Kendall-Hunt) rushed the text while placing a higher priority on quantity of sales rather than the quality of the product. I will have a second edition available March 2004.

    God Bless!

    Jamie

  3. I have failed the last programming class I took ot the local college. So I took it upon myself to learn the VB programming concepts using the book by Bates. I finally understand!!!!! There are a lot of spelling errors in the book, but the content is what is important. I feel I can go take that class now and pass with flying colors. If only other textbooks made this topic as easy to understand.
