  1. This book has the great advantage of presenting such a difficult subject just like a personal teacher would do. It's written in a clear way and explains some important concepts about the 8086 processor. My advice is:if you want to learn assembler here's a good book to start with (even if it seems a little dated!)

  2. Norton and Socha's authority makes this book a must to every "beginner" assembly programmer. This book presents basic items such as binary numbers, registers & basic arithmetic inside the 8086 family processors into part 1. The contents of the book becomes closely related with DSKPATCH - a real program written in assembly - so the reader has a UNIQUE opportunity to see how real programmers (and here Norton is a PC guru) use step-wise refinements techniques and modular projects in a real world. The 2nd edition is based in MASM 5/5.1, Borland TASM and OPTASM features. Maybe we must wait for MASM 6.1 update... then it'll become a rating 10...

  3. I've read this book, and I really liked it. It is great. It teaches assembly language in a simple a versatile way. If you want lo learn Assembly language, this is a MUST-READ.

  4. By far the best book to learn assembly bar none!
Before reading this book I thought the Jeff Duntemann assembly book was pretty good but this book makes it look bad!
First half of book has you working in debug which comes with every version of windows and easier to get going than masm.
2nd half covers masm but code still works with latest version of microsoft assembler 8.0 which I'm currently using!

  1. - Covers assembly language programming.
    - Attempts to cover Fuzzy Logic Controler.
    - Has descriptions of hardware.

Might be good for entry level.
Certainly NOT worth the money. Nothing here you can't get from the spec sheets. Examples in asm harder to follow than C. While every student should learn asm, the focus should be on C.
Authors show lack of software development skills, and a sketchy knowlege of computer science.

  1. This book contains lots of examples and source code so students/readers can get a firm grasp on the programming constructs of the HC11 language. Yet,it lacks in it's examples with interfacing. There are no examples that would show one how to actually wire completly an external device to the EVBU board.

  1. most definately not a book for the beginning assembly language programmer. that said, this is one of the most detailed and informative books on the subject i have every had the pleasure of finding, purchasing, and reading.

the book travels deep into the electronic architecture of the humble pc and teaches you how to do things you never even knew could be done. it covers parallel port and serial port interfacing, memory architecture, graphics programming, and just about every other facet of the pc that there is in a very comprehensive and satisfying manner.

i have purchased 9 books so far published by prentice hall, and all were superb. i whole heartedly recommend to EVERYONE that if you ever need to know about something and want a book, see what prentice hall has on the subject FIRST. the quality and quantity of information and the layout and design in their publications are second to none.

if assembly language programming were a religion then this is my bible, and the authors and publishers are my gods.

  1. Peter Norton's introductory assembly language book was one of the first books I picked up that let me see under the hood of my system, going light-years beyond the C:\ prompt. This book still has its uses, for anyone wanted to start a little lower than C/C++/Java, yet not completely getting off the programming track. Interesting challenges are throughout, with mini-Norton Utilities constructed with the provided examples.

While most new Assembly programmers would rather skip the having to build your own utilities, this book gives you the opportunity... and the chance to make it better. Buy it if assembly programming has gotten into your blood.

  1. I just want to clarify for anybody considering this book that the book's examples are compatible 'as is' with the Hi-Tech PICC18 compiler. The supplemental website (www.reesemicro.com) contains a ZIP archive of modified book examples that are compatible with both the Microchip MCC18 and Hi-Tech PICC18 compilers. The compiler differences are hidden in an include file, so the modified book examples that are compatible with both compilers are practically identical to the examples in the book. The reviewer below (Mr. Estrade) contacted me, and he had attempted to compile the book's original examples with the MCC18 compiler. (I am the author of this book, and unfortunately to post this I had to assign a number value for the review - so I chose a '3' since it was in the middle of the range).

  2. Unlike other PIC books which covers on assembly language only, the assembly language + C language approach in this book is pretty good. It helps to enhance the understanding of programming PIC from low to high level.

I think this book is focusing on programming, rather than building the hardware circuitry such as button debounce, voltage regulator etc. Therefore, I would recommend this book to reader who already has knowledge in building PIC or other microcontroller circuitry. Indeed, the author covers almost all the essential functions in PIC, such as I2C, UART, timer, which I think it helps beginner who used to write in assembly language, to move on to programming in higher system level. For advanced programmer who has practiced the functions mentioned above and integrate all of them into a system, perhaps you won't find this book to help a lot.

Dissapointedly, almost all the topic covers are more toward PIC16 than PIC18 which is more powerful. I expected to learn some powerful features such as USB, TCP/IP to be run on PIC18.

One more opinion, isn't Microcontrollers a more suitable term to be used in the book title instead of Microprocessors?

  3. they sent this book within two or three days, I really admire their shipment service

  4. This is a good book for a collage student who does not know much about the pic. This is not a good book for experimenters, it is not an easy read, but it is very detailed on it's subject matter.
If you are a beginner this book is not for you, it does not go into any detail of the code, either in assemble or C code, it does have lots of theory on machine code which I haven't used in 15 years.
This book is good for the engineering student, but there are friendlier books on the pic out there.

  5. This is a good hard-back book. The text is very understandable and very interesting for a great price!
