2 comments about Object-Oriented Assembly Language.
- The printed source code in this book is riddled with
typographical errors and there is no disk included with the
book. The concepts in the book are presented in an
unorganized manner. The final program (ICONEDIT.COM) does
not assemble correctly under the Microsoft Assembler, even
though the author claims that it does. The overall concept
of the book was a good idea but unfortunately the author
lacked good organization and presentation skills.

1 comments about Autodesk Inventor 11 Accelerated Productivity: Assemblies and Advanced Concepts, An Interactive Course for Autodesk Inventor 11.
- This is a MASTERPIECE OF TEACHING something this complex in the easiest way possible!!! I had about 3 weeks to find a way to learn Inventor. I researched the author and found he was a certified Autodesk Inventor instructor for over 10 years and his course is certified by Autodesk, as confirmed on the Autodesk website. I also found these courses for Inventor 8, so I could see he had lots of experience creating the courses. After viewing the demo on the TEDCF website, I knew the technique would work, and I liked his presentation style. I purchased Autodesk Inventor 11 Accelerated Productivity: Solid Modeling, An Interactive Course for Autodesk Inventor 11, Autodesk Inventor 11 Accelerated Productivity: Assemblies and Advanced Concepts, An Interactive Course for Autodesk Inventor 11, Autodesk Inventor 11 Accelerated Productivity: 2D Drafting and Customization, An Interactive Course for Autodesk Inventor 11, and Accelerated Productivity 11: Sheet Metal Design--An Interactive Course for Autodesk Inventor 11. As recommended, I listened to all of the lessons, and took notes to keep track of the big picture. There were a number of areas I would not need, so I just listened enough to know whether or not I needed it for my project. Then I organized my project and started creating my models and saw my invention come to life. It was an exciting moment made entirely possible by David Melvin's masterpiece of teaching. I go back and refresh my learning all the time. The memory jogger will search for the concept in the lessons and take you right to it. I believe the proof in his teaching style, borne of hard work and experience, is that he taught someone outside the profession to create models in Inventor 11 is so short a time!!! If you don't know how Inventor works, the program will not let you do anything. The only error messages I received were simple and easy to fix, because David Melvin taught me the big picture, and I designed my models using his experience to guide me. My only formal training is an engineering drafting course at University of Florida in 1965. Later, I changed my major from engineering to accounting, and am an auditor/CPA. David's straight talk on concept after concept makes it possible to focus all your energy on learning Inventor in a very short time. I will always be grateful to David Melvin for producing these courses and teaching me something I'll enjoy using the rest of my life.

3 comments about Visual C++ Optimization with Assembly Code.
- The book delivers what the title promises: how to combine Visual C++ with assembler. Each possible combination of calls (C++ -> assembler, assembler -> C++) will be explained in great detail. Examples are kept simple which helps the reader to not loose survey what's the point to be explained in that example.
You should not expect to get much instructions how to write the fastest assembly code possible. The book gives only a couple of hints in chapter 1 ("The existing loop commands ... slow down the overall performance of the program and are indeed an anachronism to the modern processor models."). It doesn't prevent the author to use that loop command in later examples anyway.
Sometimes I also missed explanations about assembly commands and MASM directives used in the examples. If you completely want to understand what's going on you have to have additional reference material (Intel, MASM) at hand.
Conclusion: It's a great book about all aspects of interaction between Visual C++ and assembly language. If you want to know how to get out most of your assembly code you should use a different book (e.g. "Inner Loops" by Rick Booth)
- Do yourself a favour and read the introduction, or really any part of it, before plonking down your hard-earned money. Thank God I could return it.
- This book is so bad, I don't know where to start:
1. Riddled with typos
2. Keeps using _beginthread (instead of _beginthreadex)
3. Better information available in online docs.

4 comments about Introduction to Assembly Language Programming: From 8086 to Pentium Processors (Undergraduate Texts in Computer Science).
- Good introductory books on assembly language are hard to come by, especially for the Intel platform. This is an attempt to fill the gap, and looking through the topics covered, it looks promising. Unfortunately, the language is so poor that the book is virtually unreadable. Almost every piece of information is repeated 2 or 3 times, sometimes resulting in an almost comical effect.
So, better luck with another book...
- This book can be a good choice for Computer Architecture introductory courses using IA32 as ISA reference. It can be useful for students as a general reference. However, complementary classic texts are also needed to cover a course, because the text of Dandamudi refers only to IA32, lacks a desiderable formal approach, and covers poorly (or does not cover) some typical issues (floating-point, DMA).
- I am the author of the book. The book's home page has detailed instructions to download free Microsoft assembler (MASM). You can also download the source code of all the programs used in the book. For instructors and students, viewgraph slides are available for all the chapters.
- I found this book easy to read and learned a great deal from it. My background is a C/C++ programmer, who needs to do a little assembly programming at times. This is the best book I have found. My search was not exhaustive, but I did read chapters from a half-dozen other books and found them unacceptable. On the downside, there are more grammatical errors than the average programming book has, but this did not detract from its ability to teach the subject. There is also some repetition, but I found this helpful because it presented the more complex topics from a different angle and reinforced what I was trying to learn. Overall, I was very impressed with the clear and thorough explanations.
