5 comments about Advanced Assembler Language and MVS Interfaces for IBM Systems and Application Programmers (Wiley professional computing).
  1. This is probably the best book on MVS Assembler in the market at the moment. If you have not read this book cover to cover yet, you should hang yourself in shame. It's not just an Assembler book, it's a Bible of the MVS internals. A sound training in Assembler is indeed required to grasp the contents of the book, but you don't have to be an Assembler Guru to start reading it.

  2. Assembler reference books are hard-to-find these days, much less good ones. This is a superb, detailed, and very thorough reference. This book presents, in good depth, a vast array of important programming issues that are not even mentioned in most other Assembler books (if you can even find one!). Highly recommended.

  3. This is the standard reference work for assembler programmers. The title implies that it covers the advanced instruction set, such as privileged instructions, that are used primarily by systems programmers and systems software developers. This edition is almost identical to the first edition, but with new chapters on extended addressability, the assembler and the linkage editor. Early chapters include assembler basics such as register usage, building macros and programming style.

  4. I am a system programmer who lives in Japan. I was described in this book and most techniques by which the programming had been done had been described up to now. I want to value this book as a memo which is the textbook and settled to oneself of the junior. I am very satisfied with the content of this book.

  5. This is a great book - I wish I could get one. I have ordered one from Amazon 4 times and each time I've been told they have a number in stock and it will ship in a couple of weeks. Then I get an email saying it's been delayed and then when I check my account, the order has disappeared completely. Even one of the sellers they link you to let me down. Get your act together, Amazon. If you don't have the book, don't advertise it. That's called dishonest advertising where I come from.

  1. I enjoyed this book, I learn how to program Mips platforms with Assembly language, If you want to learn how to program in assembly language for the Mips this is the book to start, Very understandable book, nice teaching, Nice work John Waldron!.

  2. This book is designed to be an introductory primer into Assembly language programing, in particular, on the MIPS processor. Assembly language programming is a subject that can a bit difficult for a reader to wrap his/her head around, even if programming in a higher level language is in his/her background. Not surprisingly, a good book on this subject takes its time to go over the subject in detail, and explain exactly what is happening. By contrast, this book seems to take an overly brusque approach to the whole subject, and the reader is often left guessing about the precise meaning of individual commands. Typos are not uncommon throughout the book, and the organization is not useful. The information, such as it is, appears to be correct for the most part (typos excluded) which keeps this from being a 1 star rating. But when a reader is new to the subject, and still confident that they could write a better book...well, it's a very bad sign.

I would suggest looking at "See MIPS Run", by Dominic Sweetman...I've not read it myself, but there are good reviews on Amazon, and I've heard good things about it from others, as well.

  3. Great to learn about assembly language programming in general and MIPS computer RISC architecture in particular. Very readable with many good, understandable examples and good reference tables for the beginning assembly language programmer.

I recommend althought the book seems somewhat over priced for its size and content.

  4. This book is really not worth the price. It is not that helpful other than finding out what commands are available. You can do that using Google for free.

  1. This is the best book I've read about assembly language. It even has a part on boolean algebra and it describes very thoroughly the language itself
