2 comments about WAP Integration: Professional Developer's Guide.
  1. This book has great working examples of WAP. They talk about each line of code, show exactly what is what and have excellent template examples. Great work!!

  2. I am a retired executive and have started my own consulting business recently. The new world of Wireless Internet has intrigued me for some time but knowing nothing about it I was reluctant to get too far on my own until just last week I got a copy of the book "WAP Integration" by Srdjan Vujosevic and Robert Laberge.
The book is very imressive in that the subject matters are well organized, the writting style is easy to read and understand and at times fun , yet contains a wealth of information covering topics for those who are amatures (like me)all the way to the more professional and knowledgeble people whose daily life is programming or creating new application protocols.
I am able to recommend the book as a "five star" product based on my limited know how of this exciting and upcoming new technology.
I am now "technically" competent enough to send e-mails through my wireless (but Internet capable) phone, and understand some of the technical concepts which were very hazy at best when I started into the book.
I especially like the info provided in "Related Sites" enabling the reader to further enhance their knowledge in any particular focused area.

    Tom Krieser

2 comments about Fundamentals of Operating Systems.
  1. This book isn't publish at the moment. It's better on the fundamentals of OS, than Tanenbaum or Stallings.

  2. This is one of the best books on OS issues I have ever seen. Entertaing and problem oriented. If you can buy this one - do not hesitate! it is not outdated, because the most fundamental problems of OS design do not change so fast as version numbers ;-).

1 comments about Mike Meyers' A+ Guide to Operating Systems Lab Manual.
  1. I was required to buy this book for a class in college. My instructor worked up a hype for Mr. Meyers' A+ books. To my utter disappointment, this book did not teach me a thing. In fact, I sold this book early in the semester and finished the semester with a different book. If Mr. Meyers really is an A+ guru, then this book is weak to his standards. This book will not pass you on the A+ exam.

2 comments about Expanding Choice: Moving to Linux and Open Source with Novell Open Enterprise Server (Novell Press).
  1. You probably know that the major unix vendors, IBM, Sun and HP, are migrating their unixes to linux. But the smaller players are also doing so. Notably Novell, as described in this book.

The first 3 chapters are a good, vendor-neutral explanation of open source and why you might want to go with it. The advice is commendably objective. For these chapters alone, you may want to seriously consider getting the book.

The remainder of the book explains Novell's proprietary offerings. It suggests possible advantages in adopting their Open Enterprise Server. The level of discussion is moderately technical. Seems mostly directed as an overview for management.

En passant, I have to remark on a list of 10 reasons, given in chapter 4, claiming that Novell "is the best choice as a partner". One reason is "Novell has more resources and talent focused on delivering enterprise class linux and open source technologies than any other vendor". I am very dubious about this. IBM is much larger and has been offering this type of linux support for several years.

  2. Expanding Choice: Moving To Linux And Open Source With Novell Open Enterprise Server by the team of Jason Williams, Peter Clegg, and Emmett Dulaney provides a detailed, hands-on guide to all of the technical and business benefits of implementing open source software in an enterprise environment, particularly when combined with select proprietary technologies. A review of the benefits and costs of both open source and closed source software systems is provided, as well as an analysis of the benefits of an approach that blends the choice and flexibility of open source with the reliability of Novell's proven networking software. This is an essential core addition to the Linux reference user's reference shelf.

2 comments about UNIX(R) System V Network Programming (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series).
  1. I have the 9th edition of this book. The author definitely knows how to teach UNIX programming. If you are busy at work for Java, ActiveX, C++ like me, you will appreciate its concise while accurate content to get you started.

  2. This book and "Practical UNIX Programming" by Kay A. Robbins are a better place to start for UNIX programming than the Stevens' books. Once you complete this book, you can move on to Stevens.
