  1. The authors worked hard - and it shows. While many booky on the subject avoid comparisons to other naming services, this book starts to tell you about directory services in general, then mentions and explains other implementations, teaches you X.500 on top of that

And that was only part I.

Part II tells you almost everything you might want to know about NDS - stuff covered in the manuals and the CNE Study kits, plus lots of additional material. Compact, understandable, consistent.

Finally, part III tells us about NDS extensions for a lot of hot products (BorderManager is already in there, so is RADIUS and Oracle), followed by an introduction to third-party utilities. Finally, we have a good treatment on NDS for Windows NT and the book closes with an outlook : "The Future of NDS", where you'll learn that Novell actually built a 2.000.000 user NDS tree once...

    Why a 9 ?

It claims to be the "Complete Guide to Novell Directory Services" - and it comes VERY close.

  2. Brian, who is sitting right accross me here, is one of the most talented persons when it comes to Novell Security. I have not yet read the book, but knowing Brian, I am sure it is a great book. Way to go Brian!!!!!

  1. I just would like to tell you that I really like your book. Very few books give a high level and high density of information while being very fluently readable. It is a pleasure to read "NT Server for Netware Admins". -- Andreas Roeschies

  2. Dialog-style writing, Paragraph organization is poor, feels like the writer don't have much time for this book.

Reading chapter 3 (Configuring Server Networking), you get all the instructions that the program probably has given you. You are "lead" to finish the installation process, the same way you would see it on screen. And at the end of the day, you still don't know "WHY" you do this or that.

So, what is the reason for the existence and the Price we pay for this book ?

  3. Last time, I gave it a 3 stars.

Now I've gone through more of this pile of papers and I think there is really no computer guys/ladies who can benefit from this book except wasting some time if you've got too much money and time to spend.

But no "computer person" should have too much time to learn new stuff these days.

  4. I bought 2 books from O'reilly partly based on the good reviews for them on this site. I thought the publisher had good-quality books. Now I doubt the trust-worthiness of these reviews.

Book like this one, which is useless for any "computer guys" has 5-stars reviews. This inevitably makes me think that those are from the authors or the publisher.

The software on the site do a greate job in helping buyers to find and select what they want. But for the readers' review, as one of the local slang says : "Believe just 10% of (some of) it could be lethal to you (or your wallet)."

That brings out another issue - can this or other internet book-stores replace the physical retail stores, in which you can have a brief look and feel of the books yourself.

With a limited budget for so many (expensive) books, one should get a personal look at the book before committing.

  5. Two years ago, when I was merely a Novell 3.x administrator supporting Windows 3.x, I found this book to be a GREAT introduction to the power of NT. Now, as a seasoned NT support engineer, I still would recommend this book to any person new to NT support.

The book rambles and repeats itself a good bit, and I'm still looking for a good but concise explanation of TCP/IP and how to design networks properly for 10, 100, 1000, and 10000 users. I'd rather not spend $10,000 for a next-to-useless certification course if I don't have to.

Of course, if you already know everything about everything, you would be God and therefore don't need books, classes, tech support numbers, or anything. You just need to rein in your ego.

2 comments about Windows NT 4 Administrator's Black Book: The Systems Administrator's Essential Guide to Installing, Configuring, Operating, and Troubleshooting a Windows NT 4 Network.
  1. The NT 4.0 Administrator is a great, easy book to use to gain practical understanding of both NT Server and NT Workstation Operating Systems. It includes outstanding hands-on practical exercises in almost every aspect of administering NT 4.0. I taught the subject using this as my Textbook and the ability of the students to work with the software as they read proved invaluable to their gaining the necessary understanding of the subject.

  2. According to the author this book stands to help novice and experienced NT administrators. I don't think even novice admins would find this book useful, nothing new at all even for me. I also tried it preparing for 70-067 exam and can't recommend it as a study guide ( that's for sure ). Interesting style but I didn't like it. For a conclusion, you can try it .
