1. This book goes past the theory and straight to the heart of the matter. What we really bought this book for.

   The layout is user friendly and easy to search for your specific (as well as general) needs.

   Many of the books in this catagory are written to 'talk over your head' and 'try to impress you with the authors knowledge', this is not one of them. I could easly 'work with' this author. Though he is quite knowledgable in this publication, it is well written and quite helpfull.

5 comments about Mastering NetWare 5.

1. I've read this book from cover to cover. I find it very helpful with it's step-by-step descriptions of various tasks dealing with NetWare 5. It is much better than the Clarke NetWare 4 and 5 books. There are some details lacking, but fundamentally, this book will be usefull long after you've read it (unlike the Clarke books). I enjoyed the style of writing and the pace was very good. Mr Gaskin managed to break the chapters into very logical parts and even broke down the subchapters very well also. This makes finding the information you need much easier.



2. This book is a super-duper one-volume covering about everything in Netware 5. With guidance from this book and a small knowhow of Netware-working, you can easily setup a brand new Netware 5 network with all needed software. The book is easy to read, which make it fast to look through and detailed enough to dig deep into special matters. The book also contains a very useful glossary and the "In-a-hurry" guidances are well planned. I bought this book to upgrade a NW 3.x network, and it covers it all!



3. I boughth this book because it was (Jan99) the only admin book about NW5. I'm disappointed. If you are new to Netware that's a good first book for you but if you are a CNE, experienced ...etc. than look somewhere else (e.g. Netware5 Administrator's Handbook) This book lacks details about everything in NW5, it is not the HOW-TO book that I need.



4. Thanks to the author. I'd much rather READ five or six hundred pages than trudge through fewer pages of just detail. And I've successfully relied on this book to take my business from Netware 3.2 to version 5 - I know I'll need more info, but this has been a fine start.



5. James has done an excellent job of covering the new features of Netware 5. Unfortunately if you are looking for down and dirty "how to" information you will be vastly sorry. I don't recommend this book for the experienced Netware admin or engineer.
