  1. This album sucks for the most part. It has its moments but its not worth paying more than $5 for it. If you see it in the used bin at the record store I would say go for it but, don't expect to like it that much. Honestly, with the exception of 4 songs, this album pretty much blows. Fat Mike's vocals are the worst on this record. Don't believe me, listen to "Hotdog in a Hallway" (Worst NOFX song of all time in my opinion). He can scream punk anthems all day long but as soon as he starts softly singing (which he does A LOT on this album) thats when I just have to shut it off.

All ranting aside, there are some good songs on this album. Freedom like a shopping cart, Bleeding Heart Disease, The Black and White and Drop the World are the only songs I actually enjoy listening to. The only other 2 songs I can tolerate are Whats a Matter with Kids Today and Release the Hostages. Everything else on the album is pure, and totally uncut FILLER.

So the bottom line is if you are starting to get into NOFX I recommend starting with White Trash, 2 Heebs and a Bean, then moving on to Punk and Drublic. Then if you really want to, LISTEN to this record first all the way through then decide if its for you. Trust me, no one will critisize you for not having it because everyone knows it sucks.

And for the people who desperatly try to defend this album, give it up. Even NOFX knows this record sucks. I have personally seen this band live 3 times and have only heard 1 song played from this record ONCE. And the song was the 45 second opener Hobophobic so that right there should tell you all you need to know about this record.

  2. The music basically is like any other album by this band, skillfully performed but not skillfully written. The music simply has no appeal, the chord progressions don't interest me. They make the Sex Pistols look good if you ask me, though of course thousands of people insist on liking them even though they have NO SKILL
Punk rock musts are listed below
    Early Green Day
    The Offspring
    Sum 41
    Pennywise
    Rancid

  3. this is my favorite nofx record. never mind how 'punk' it is - the songwriting is incredible and shows them at their creative peak. unfortunately this album had a negative reception with the fans, and nofx have never been as ambitious or adventurous with their music since. don't get me wrong, i love all their music, but this is the one.

  4. Compared with the rest of their discography, this is NOFX's slowest, least hardcore, and possibly "catchiest" release. If you're not big on ska, you're probably alot better off checking out "Punk in Drublic" or their earlier material. Lots of slower, catchy drum groove and guitar driven tracks here with less hardcore three chord then any other album by the band.

Liza is a good track to listen to get a feeling for how this album differs from the "standard" NOFX sound. Lyrically it's standard fare, smart humor and politics shot padded with bathroom humor (hear specifically lesbian and fat girl jokes.)

This album rocks, but if you're more interested in being hardcore then picking up a catchy good record you might think it's "weak sauce." just a warning.

"Freedom Like a Shopping Cart" may be the best song ever recorded.

  5. NOFX is one of my favorite bands and i have to admit this was one of my least favorite albums at first. As the years went on i liked it more and more. Now I absolutely love this album. This and "So Long..." and prob my two favs at the moment. I love the mix of punk with some good ska mixed in. Everyone says that this record is slow, but other than a few songs, i think that it has that same lightning fast feel as any other NOFX album. This CD is soooo good, I totally recommend it. Fat Mike is the man.

  1. It's been a long long silence after the 1984's No Sense of Sin, but the Lotus Eaters now break down themselves, and create a reinvention.

It doesn't mean this album has not the Lotus Eaters style of the 80s (in fact the Peter Coyle's voice is as fresh and expresive as 20 years ago), but their sound now is much more mature, they kept the guitars and changed the 80s synths for soft beats of contempory jangle pop, trip hop and some electronic experiments.

All the tracklist worth, but for me, there are some highlights that deserve attention. Bodywave (a very good electronic introduction to the voyage to come), stay free (perfect single, ala 'britpop'), lost in flow (good soft electronic experiment), face of the century (deep dramatic, powerful lyrics), come togheter (remembering that Lotus 80s low songs that we love) and State of Mind (Beautiful exit).

Silentspace really worths, i'd recommend it without a doubt for any fan of the contempory rock/alternative.

  2. Peter Coyle's voice is as wonderful as ever. Unfortunately, the accompnaying music to this CD is nothing compared to "No Sense of Sin" and is quite boring. Believe me I wanted to like this CD as I have been a fan of Jermey and Peter for a long time. I have given it a few tries, but have to conclude that the music is disappointingly bland. I would have given the CD 1 star except Peter's voice brings it up to 3 stars. Basically, I'll listen to anything in the world if he sings with it.

  3. After 17 years since the release of their debut album " No Sense of Sin " back in 1984, Peter Coyle and Jem Kelly finally came up with Silentspace. This album is a collection of Peter and Jem old The Lotus Eaters new wave sound. The unique and enchanting sound of Lotus Eaters is captured in every songs. Although you will miss the melodic sound of synthesizer and piano of classic songs like German Girl, Love Still Flows, The First Picture of You and Alone of all her sex. The guitar rhythms of Set me Apart, Out on your Own. Two Virgins Tender and Soul in Sparks is evident in most of the songs. My personal favorites are Feel It, Stay Free and Can you Kisses Fly among the eleven songs included. This album is worth the wait for all Lotus Eaters and New Wave music fans as well.

  5. The follow-up to the fabulous 1984 record "No Sense of Sin" is finally here! (If you don't count the bbc sessions CD) Has it really been 17 years? The new CD has some shining moments that sound like they could have appeared on the bands debut. The signature guitar sounds and synth washes are present along with the classic vocal presentation that identifies the band as the Lotus Eaters. The songs on the CD with that formula are melodic and as good as anything on "No Sense of Sin". The Lotus Eater formula is sadly missing on about 30% of the tracks. The other 70% of the CD is superb. For fans of the band, this is alot of fun and shouldn't be missed. For beginners to the band: Look for "No sense of Sin" instead.

  1. This debut album from Bauhaus .is seminal in terms of launching what was then a form of punk unclassified and yet undetermined, but never the less important and beyond all other influences at the time. From art student and what?, a tin can, half realized punk band, what formed between the four members, specifically Murphy and Ash was pure magic. Japan came close to this style, butr not really. They just didin't get how wonderful the dark edges could be as a creative tool. I miss the band but am glad about all my experiences regarding my childhood and Bauhaus.

5 comments about Seeing Sounds.

  1. SOONER OR LATER EVERYONE REALIZES THE GENIOUS OF N*E*R*D ITS A FACT. WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT I DIDNT GIVE THEM A CHANCE BECAUSE OF THE ROCK ASPECT BUT I WENT TO THE GLOW IN THE DARK TOUR WITH THEM KANYE LUPE AND RIHANNA AND THEY BLEW MY MIND. AS SOON AS I GOT HOME I ORDERED THE FIRST 2 ALBUMS THEN WHEN SEEING SOUNDS DROPPED I BOUGHT A COUPLE COPIES OF IT. SEEING SOUNDS IS EPIC LIKE A MOVIE WITH EACH SONG BEING A DIFFERENT SCENE. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE ALBUMS THAT WHEN YOU FIRST BUY IT YOU NEED TO TURN THE VOLUME ALL THE WAY UP CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LISTEN TO IT. I SWEAR I WAS SEEING SOUNDS YO NO LIE.

  2. N.E.R.D. always takes me out of my element. I hear Pharrell on R&B and hip hop tracks, so I have to erase that from my mind when I hear a N.E.R.D. album. Make no mistake about it. I really enjoy the Neptunes, but it's N.E.R.D. that makes me say "What happened?" It always takes a wavy boatride through rock, soul, hip hop, and a little bit of blues. The lyrics are thoughtless (ex. "you punk b**ch*" on "Anti-Matter", "Everyone Nose" rhyming about women by the bathroom, "Do you have some black inside you? Would you like some?", "her a** is a spaceship I want to ride"). What? If people listened to most of the words on this album, it'd be stupid. But it's the creativity of the BEATS that attracts me to the music (ex. "She Wants to Move" is great for a model runway). Unfortunately, I can't buy an album off of beats alone. I need the lyrics to challenge me or at least be interesting. A lot of it sounds like a fun basement freestyling session, so if that's your cup of tea, this is the album for you. If not, you might want to listen to a preview of this one first to make sure it's something you'd want to relisten to.

  3. N.E.R.D.'s Seeing Sounds is my first time listening to anything released from them. I've heard of the band but never had a chance to ever sit down and experience what they are bringing. Plus all I knew really was that Pharrell was the lead member of the group and knowing how good of a producer he is next to Timbaland, it was very interesting to find out about them.

So I'm surfing on YouTube and it seems some song called Everyone Nose was one of the Most Active Videos and I just listened to 30 seconds of the song, skipped around the clip and exit out-I did not even give it a chance but then I remembered Kanye West singing the chorus on TMZ and I went back t the video and actually liked it. I actually knew what Everyone Nose meant which mostly others didn't and called it garbage-its explaining cocaine addiction obviously and the chorus is just catchy which you can't go wrong with anyway because we all want to repeat a line without it being too complicated or rubbish. Then I heard Spaz on a Microsoft Zune commercial but that was the instrumental but that had me hooked alone after seeing the album cover of their upcoming album I did more research on them and listened to the Spaz single while I dis.

I finally ordered the Seeing Sounds album after thanking YouTubers who uploaded the album because if you are like me-we all deserve a free taste before we spend money on someones work. So I play the CD and the tracks get better from the beginning to end.

Every song on the album seems to always has this 'Pharrell Conclusion' before the end and it always takes you in deep. While songs like Time For Some Action, Everyone Nose, Windows and Anti Matter are ones having to get used to-they have the exact mark I just explained.

Seeing Sounds does a good job in providing Alternative Rock, Funk, Experimental and Hip-Hop and I think this is a good move for any artist because when you go Alternative, your saying you know pleasing everyone is impossible but your doing your best to reach out to all people of different taste in music. Here is my Top 5 from the album and why-

    1. Happy (This song can be played all day if you want to because the title says it all and you can't go wrong with an all around 'Feel Good' track)

    2. Laugh About It (Even though its the last song of the album, you'll love the guitar in the background playing and the way the song and lyrics revolves around it is amazing)

    3. You Know What (Pharrell uses a unique lyric flow on this one and has a nice sense of Funk in it)

    4. Love Bomb (Lets be honest-'Love' is the only thing that can save us and as you listen closely, you would look at the crisis in the world an repeat the exact same words)

    5. Spaz (You just can't ignore the the the production that went into this-definitely a party and club choice.

The whole album is enjoyable but you'll mostly skip to Spaz and continue from there. Congratulations, N.E.R.D.-you released a classic.

    -Christopher Winters :)

  4. Only slip up was adding track 11(A American Boy like record. Other than that this is a very solid album.

    Top Songs:
    Anti Matter
    Spaz
Sooner or Later (Tour-De-Force, killer guitar, the song starts off slow and then builds up to this mind blowing finale)
    Happy
    Kill Joy
    Love Bomb
    Laugh About It

  5. As with many of my "Pop" music purchases, this one was made because it was Amazon's MP3 Daily Deal. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to this particular genre (it all sounds like "rap" to me), so I read other opinions in order to gain some knowledge as to what I was listening for.

The basis is a looped (minimalistic, John Cage influenced) track very common in hip-hop, rap, techno, dance & other pop music styles. There are original lyrics, although the tendency is to repeat phrases over & over (also part of the minimalistic influence?).

The first track is probably the most original of the entire recording. You can see that the artists made a real effort to leave the listener with an unanswered question in their mind, and that's what good music does... asks questions... sometimes resolving/answering, and sometimes not.

The second portion of the album gives almost some old-time Marvin Gaye or Isley Brother influenced vocals, with gentle crooning, nice harmonies, and easy, driving beats. But there is definitely a modern jive to the thing with more of the electronic mastering throughout the album.

I read the sentiment that listeners would prefer that the two styles were combined, but I am unsure how that would be done without creating an unpleasant chaos. I actually like the different styles. It helps to keep my attention on the music.

Good job. Don't know that I'd buy from these guys again, but it was worth the $3.99.

5 comments about Blue Lines.

  1. I am 18 and I just discovered Massive Attack last year. I really liked Portishead and Tricky and thought Trip-Hop was a very interesting musical genre. But it was not until I heard Blue Lines I understood what Trip-hop was all about. It's amazing this is from 1991 because it sounds more modern and (dare I say) fresher than anything today. The rap anthems, Five man army and Blue lines are amazing in their arrangements and slow motion rapping. This is what trip hop is all about; it's not suppose to be depressing, it's suppose to be relaxing. Sounds much better on vinyl, too. Highly recommended.

  2. I have written a review complaining about the Free Shipping in the US (broken cd cases, torn covers), but actually there seems to be a problem with PAID INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING too.
I bought Madonna's Give it 2 me single, Massive Attack - Blue Lines and Depeche Mode's Speak and Spell and all of them arrived with broken cases, I had to replace the cases for new ones.
Just to mention what I said in the other review: bought a box set and 3 CDs from HMV Japan and they arrived in more than perfect condition in Brazil, faster than Amazon!
I tried to buy from Amazon Japan, but guess what? The Fedex shipment is pretty bad as the parcel ALWAYS gets stuck in Customs and you have this long list of taxes that almost exceed the price of the product!
The Amazon shipment service (national and international) is a joke!!
5 stars for the CD tho. A very nice kick start effort by Massive Attack.

  3. If you are looking for a great cd to listen to than look no further than Massive Attack's "Blue Lines". My personal favorites on the album have to be Daydreaming and One Love. This CD is a must have for any true fan.

  4. Trip-Hop is basically hip-hop with a bit more substance than your average gangster record (those actually do have substance as well), and way more musical merit than any _________ rap artist out there today. Being released in 1991 makes it even cooler, but aside from the ahead of it's time bull_______ (influence had no impact on me whatsoever when deciding to get this), it's an awesome record on it's own. THe music is just so sublime. Trippy beats, deep basslines, samples of pianos, strings, effects, paired with dark urban raps, with soulful vocals that soar through the air. Can't argue with that.

The songs on here have the urban vibe that I alwayas mention, but it is very _________ difficult to explain in words. No worries, the music is great anywhere, Blue Line really comes out in the downtown rain. IT's also great music that serves as great chilling music. Don't even treat this as backround music, this may be one of the most enganging albums to actually LISTEN to I have come across this year. I've listened to quite the many perfect classic albums this year.

This album is always changing, always keeping your interest. From Safe From Harm, Five Man Army, the masterful Unfinished Symphony, and the coolest of them all, Daydreaming, every song on here rocks. Definitly a perfect album. Not a minute wasted. I prefer it over Entroducing... by DJ Shadow. That album also is another great album from beggining to end. Electronic music really does have soul. Way more emotion than Nirvana ever will have.

    10/10

  5. massive attack's 'blue lines' is a classic example of melding deep bass lines, great percussion tracks, fabulous vocals by tricky and shara nelson and inventive samples into the music phenom known as trip hop.

many have tried and failed at creating music this good. this is the kind of sound that can sit in the background or take center stage at any event. and its inventiveness is matched only by its timelessness. this cd sounds as good now as it did 15+ years ago.

  1. Unlike a lot of others, I'm really happy Sioux is not stuck in the 80's! After all people, they are over! This album is her most personal and since I downloaded it into my mp3 months ago I have not stopped listening to it. She is in great voice, the songs are strong and the beats are addictive! If you get a chance to see her - GO! I saw her a few months back and she brought the house down! And I have seen Sioux live at least 10 times and I think it was my favorite show - well, second - nothing beats the first time...

  2. I hope she's paying you guys in Euro's or in Sterling! Seriously, though - I love Siouxsie's 80's stuff, it was brilliant, and she and her band really could not put out anything that wasn't a home run. Simple as that. Since then her clothes have gotten more expensive, her voice better trained and richer, but face it, the music is boring and indistinguishable from a hundred other bands. She should take up baking. And she still makes fun of Goths, legions of whom have paid for her villas in France - Remember, oh she of the flat chest - that without the minions in black you would be working in a laundromat.

  3. To keep it short; this is an amazing album.
If you liked the Banshees I see no reason why you wouldn't adore this release, she has not lost a step.
Truly an icon, and still on top of the game even if alot of people don't know or don't care anymore, this stuff is as viable as anything on the radio today.

It is amazing how she can still put out something in this day and age, and it is almost as obscure to the average listener as it would have been had it come out 20 years ago.

  4. Ok....I purchased this cd back in Octobre 2007 & I have been stuck on it since. I am just now getting around to a sending out a review.
First off, Siouxsie never left, she was just amusing Budgie for a little while longer.
This cd is totally 100% worth buying. Every track bursts with newness each time you listen to them. I could go down the list of tracks but that still would not justify them enough.
Just buy the damn cd & grow from it.
    You won't regret it.

  5. Oh Siouxsie Sioux.... a staple of my listening enjoyment since the Banshees released "Kaleidoscope". Here is my bias (I believe in full disclosure): I think "Kaleidoscope" and "Juju" are masterpieces, and I cannot imagine she will ever reach those artistic heights again. I hope I'm wrong, but I just doubt it will happen. Everything the Banshees did back then--even their way-outside-the-box recording and production techniques--was totally cutting-edge. In these days when everything is done to sterile click track precision, check out "Happy House" on Kaleidoscope. Listen through it. Then, to confirm your suspicion that the tempo increased to bat-out-of-hell speed by the end, play the last ten seconds of the song, then skip back to the beginning. Holy acceleration, Batman! But hey, musicians get excited and speed up sometimes. What's the crime, right? Personally, I love it.

Later came her "Creatures" recordings with husband/drummer Budgie, my favorite being "Hai", incorporating a guest Japanese percussionist. The Creatures were fun for awhile, but I think they took the vocal/percussion duet idea further than it really needed to go.

After all that duet material, this new solo record by Siouxsie is a very welcome addition to her discography. While neither as quirky nor as inspired as those early Banshees records (not a typo: they actually were 12-inch, vinyl records), it is a very solid release by a wonderfully talented artist. So, while nothing on this CD pushes the boundaries like those beloved Banshees LPs did, for longtime fans like myself or the uninitiated (could there BE any uninitiated at this stage of the game?), this is a good, solid recording from which I expect to get many hours of enjoyment.

5 comments about NEW MAPS OF HELL.

  1. Im not sure why a Bad Religion fan could be dissapointed with this, I have come to the conclusion that is at least in there top 5 albums. The first half of the album barely leaves you the chance to catch your breath. Just straight up musical brutality. The 2nd half is a little smoothed out, but not weak by any stretch. I think of all the things I love about BR, what i love most is that they dont sell out, but mangage to give you something fresh on each release. IF you wanted Empire 2 you wont get it here. IF you want Bad Religions Most aggressive work to date this is it. I cant go a day without listening to it, Very Loud!!

  2. If you like Bad Religion, you'll like this. If you like punk rock, you'll like this. It's not Bad Religions best, however, it DOES sound like Suffer era Bad Religion with newer production and a ton of impressive backing vocals. The reason I love this album so much is that it is consistent. There really is no really standout tracks, but instead many really good tracks. It won't fail to impress.

  3. Bad Religion-New Maps Of Hell ****

One of the most memorable things I have ever been apart of was seeing bad religion touring with the Warped tour in support of this album which was to come out the next day. They were second main on the bill, and this was in Denver, Colorado and it had rained all day till Bad Religion came out, they played amazing and the entire crowed was throughing water bottles over from one side to the next and this went on for the entire set....fantastic.

The next day I bought the album and put it on and was not disappointed in the slight. While it isn't the greatest Bad Religion I have ever heard it is certainly the best since Stranger Than Fiction. Graffins lyrics are as always very intelligent and informative. Bret Gurewitz and crew lay down solid guitar lines and Brooks Wackerman is still beating the crap out of his drums like it's 1985.

'Heroes & Martyrs' along with 'Germs Of Perfection' point to subject matter often not tackled. As "un-punk" as this statement is 'New Dark Ages' should have been a hit single. 'Requiem For Dissent' sounds and feels like Stranger Than Fiction would have been a better home for it but is still good. 'Honest Goodbye' became a hit despite it's shocking imagery of In Cold Blood, which is refreshing, and 'Grains Of Wrath' is one of the very best songs Bad Religion ever did. Many are pointing to '52 Seconds' as the albums opus, and I must say it sounds all too familiar for them.

Is this worth owning for more than just the hit singles yes, and in fact it was one of the better albums to emerge from 2007.

  4. This CD is a must for any Bad REligion or Classic punk fan. I'm listening to it right now. The best tracks are. Grains of Wrath, Dearly Beloved, Honest Goodbye, Murder, and Before You Die.

  5. I'm not gonna say a whole lot of stuff that I haven't already seen in the reviews I've read, but since I bought the CD I am all but obligated to leave a review of some sort.

The Bad Religion era has been marked by many ups and downs, some great CDs, some good CDs, and some not so good CDs. All the CDs are listenable but only about half of them actually get a fair share of playing time in my CD player.

I am happy to say that this is one of them. I will admit that yes, a lot of the songs have a similar feel to them, but they are good songs and they have certain things that distinguish them from one another (Greg's vocals come to mind most immediatly). The song "Honest Goodbye" kind of divides the CD in half, the first half being the fast paced metally-punk sounding music and the second half is the more experimental stuff that ultimately ends with keyboards under the guitar solos. Naturally, the first half of the CD is better, I would say that the first 11 songs make up the bulk of the CD and all of them are very good. Catchy guitar riffs that get heavier at times (no real bass sadly) and commanding vocals from Greg, who has proved to be probably the best voice in punk rock today. After "Scrutiny" however, the CD falls off and becomes pretty boring until the final track, which is okay at best. They experiment with too many different sounds on these tracks and leave you with a "is this still Bad Religion?" feeling. Usually I just play the CD as an 11 track ordeal and then swap it with "Empire Strikes First" or a classic like "No Control"

All in all it's a pretty good CD though. These guys are staying strong, that's for sure, and in the grand scheme of things, if you put all 14 Bad Religion CDs in order from greatest to worst (New America, heh) this one would be somewhere right in the middle. It's worth picking up if you've already got "Empire" "No Control" "Against the Grain" "Suffer" "Stranger Than Fiction" and "How Could Hell be Any Worse?" but make sure if you're a new Bad Religion fan that you get those first those are their finest.

  1. Dixie roadrash is the name of the "hidden" track although it is really just track 15 on the cd. Just put the cd in and skip to track 15 the whole album is great but dixie roadrash is the best and features guest vocals from heather from the band teen idols.

  2. I totally loved Operation Ivy but hated that crap called Rancid. So of course I then went to Common Rider, expecting fast Op Iv style punk/ska songs but I was shocked at hearing calm, light ska/reggae sound. About a month later I decided to give Common Rider a second chance and was completely blown away. This album is a masterpiece. Jesse Michael's amazing voice and lyrics truly convey the imagery and ideas that this album presents, and fit in like puzzle pieces with the beautiful music. Listening to this is like taking a trip into Jesse's head and exploring his subconscious, This CD is not hardcore at all, infact its soft and emotional, it sounds amazingly human. At the very least, this album is great if you need to take a break from listening to someone screaming unitelligable lyrics about beating random people up.

  3. Everyone needs to stop giving bad reviews to Common Rider just because they aren't Op Ivy. I agree that Op Ivy is one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time, but Common Rider is just as good, if not better. If you have an open mind to music, and would like to hear something different, check out Common Rider. Everyone has to grow up sometime, and Common Rider is what Op Ivy grew up to be. Check out Carry On and Classics of Love, they'll brighten your day, even if your dog just died. Also check out they're new CD "This is Unity Music". Peace and Love.

  4. i love operation ivy i think all the songs on energy are pure gold, but i will be honest this cd is not worth buying at all, if you listen to the preview tracks some of the songs sound like op ivy style but the chorus's are terrible, do your self a favor and buy energy by opiv or 40oz by sublime or lets go by rancid but leave this cd out of your collection

sorry jesse but this band should not exist, you should have quit a punk rocklegend not a hasben ,

  1. So when my wife picked up the new Breeders album I thought to myself, "Title TK was good but I really don't think they can do it again." Having recently watched "Loud Quiet Loud", the documentary about the Pixies reunion, I wasn't really sure if they should do Breeders again yet. I'd have preferred a new Pixies album first, but that wasn't going to happen. Once the disc entered the CD player I was hooked... The Breeders are back and better than ever! "We're gonna rise" is probably the high point of the album... if there is one as all the songs, being very different from one another, mesh together so well. "Regalame esta noche" is fantastic! I haven't heard Deal sister pipes like that in a long time!
"Bang on" is... well... bang on! Suprisingly, there isn't one song on here that I would say was "ehh..." or "so so". Pod has two "ehh..." songs, Last splash has one "so so" and Title TK has one "ehh..." and two "So So"s Just so you know I'm not biased!

  2. I have to say, I agree with some previous reviews that liked this right from the start. I'm a long time fan, and while this collection maybe isn't quite as blatantly catchy, or "hooky", it is low fi, has a great gritty feel to it, and I identify with it. My only critique is that it winds up feeling a little similar after while, but the ultimate tes is whether you go back and keep playing an album or cd, and this passes the test. I'm looking forward to seeing them live this month, and I think this release will bring fans close to them in that type of setting.

  3. Mountain Battles is a great follow up album by the Breeders. It has been 14 years since we've heard their most popular album, Last Splash (93-94). I didn't buy their last album, so cannot comment on it, but I do recognize the old Last Splash Breeders is now a different group, with new members along with old. This album has some good tunes that ignite interest right away, and a couple that need more listening. I'm glad I bought this record, overall, and would recommend it to other Breeders lovers.

  4. As one of indie-rock's shiners, Kim Deal has made a name for herself, not only with the Breeders, but also because before that she was the bassist for The Pixies. The Pixies were an excellent band, but Kim Deal didn't get to showcase herself as much as she wanted, so that's when she started The Breeders.

In the early '90's they became known due to their single "Cannonball", which most rock fans have heard. So now over a decade later and after a Pixies reunion The Breeders have had a reunion as well, bringing us "Mountain Battles". It's the first album reuniting her with her talented sister Kelley in six years.

The album features the title track "We're Gonna Rise" that takes the Breeders sound into a slightly different style, more psychedelic, with her vocals sounding a bit tranquilized as well with the song "Spark". The band rocks out slightly harder with numbers like "It's The Love" and "German Studies", with their pulsating bass lines and interesting melodies. The album finishes out with "Here No More" with it's country harmonies. It's good to see these sisters reunite on this album.

  5. I'll keep it short and sweet - I truly think this is easily their second best CD ever. I don't think they'll ever top "Last Splash", but I enjoy this one better than all of the rest. It did take me 2-3 or three listens to get into it too for some reason, but I'm glad I did get into it finally.
