  1. If you listen to this album and don't like it you may just be retarded. Sorry but it is true. Sue Me.

  2. Not being pleased with any other reviews for this album, I take it upon myself to change that.
This is the first offering we Americans got from these drunken Scots. This is possibly their most accessable record because it is their most simple. Like the rest of their work to come, it is sloppy, lo-fi, and anti-PC. Their style (on this album)is part country, part garage, and part the Fall, all served with all the drunken punk attitude you could ask for. The cover of "Stand by your man" is brilliant (especially following the lyrical content of the previous songs).
So throw back many beers crank this up and invite your PC friends over to watch them squirm.

  3. This is a great cd: 1 Part Hank Williams 1 Part Sebadoh III 1 Part Guitar Wolf Mix it all up and it rocks like nobodys business

  1. Trampoline is filled with meaningful lyrics and a mix of unusual and common instruments that tickle the senses! A welcome different sound for any music collection.

  1. One of the best albums of the 90's, Sixteen Deluxe picks up where the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev left of before the became "soft". Fans of blistering psychedelic guitars will not be disapointed. For a band that formed to open up for Ed Hall, they have become a great force. Starting with a unique take of Brian Eno's "Here come the Warm Jets" they take us on a trip that is worth taking. The stand out songs are "Shane's Song", the bouncy "Idea" (which there was a great video showing off all Chris Smith's vintage peddles!) "Baby Headrush" the brilliant "Apron Strings" and a stunning 15+ version of Big Star's "Kangaroo". The two singers (and Guitarists) Carrie Clar and Chris Smith trade off lead vocals on pretty mcuh each song. Unlike many bands at the time, even though they use truckloads of effects, they do not reley on them and each song could stand alone with out them. Much in the tradition of the Lip's "Hit to Death" this is an overload on the senses that might give one the feeling of being on mindbending substances. You must own this album! Then track down their Pilot Knob e.p.

5 comments about 13 Evil Tales.

  1. If the Beach Boys essence was ever transferred over to a modern surf band, it was hand-delivered to this fine band of Northwest kids (apparently they are grown up now and play killer rock 'n' roll...try THEIR "The Set-Up" CD).

This CD has great sounds not heard since the heyday of surf and drag music (1963...before the Beatles killed it) with very good songwriting. Great singing and guitar playing, too.

I recommend this CD for fans of surf, 60's sounds and rock 'n' roll in general.

  2. For a while, the appropriate response to a record as relatively meaningless as this one seemed to be to just ignore it. After all, they're probably nice guys, and almost certainly into good music. The recent rash of hype of them as a "great band," however, seems to dictate otherwise. In the dull, samey-sounding surf music revival genre, these guys are one of the dullest, incapable of even a mildly memorable riff or hook. This record offers absolutely nothing in terms of worthwhile music, only bland, repetitive songs that aren't even remotely entertaining.

  3. These guys need to pack it in. Nothing new here at all. I even punished myself and picked up their new album "The Set Up" Perfect title because I was set up.

  4. This disco rawks and if ya lookin for the SURFING STUFF then GET IT! I'm one hardta pleeze man but I LOVES dem Boss Martians! It ain't my favorite BM's stuff tho - the best stuff is on vinyl only so get a rekkurd player if ya ain't got one and get their other stuff on wax - its da best.

  5. this was hit at a friends bachelorette party - popular tracks were "the Hot Foot" and "Havin' Fun Tonight" - also bought the Bomboros, Laika & the Cosmonauts, and Man or Astroman - good buy for anyone looking for good retro party surfin music!

5 comments about Oi To The World! Christmas With The Vandals.

  1. Add this to your collection of music. Christmas can not be the same without it. My holiday tradition is to play "Oi to the World" and "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation" every year. The cd is a creative, hilarious work of art...I can see why it is so expensive. I never knew I was harboring a punk collectors item...I just got it in 2001 when it came out! Don't hate me :)

  2. This is a good example of a great 90's punk album. It's Christmas music fused with different styles of punk. Every song is different. It's kind of like the white album of Xmas punk. A Gun For X-mas and Thanks For Nothing are hardcore songs. Oi to the World! is Oi punk. Here I am Lord is a catchy, vocally tedious cover done Ska and I Don't Believe in Santa Claus could've come from an 80's Anarcho band. It's not a serious album by any means. I mean, there's a song called Christmas time for my penis. Still, Oi to the World! has some genius in it.

  3. Let's be honest for a change. I know that this is Amazon.com and not a music publication, and people only review albums they are totally in love with, but can we dispense with piling on of praise for one of many generally mediocre potential purchases out there? Can writing a review really help if all we do is go ape for any trivial POS out there? 5 stars?!!? That sort of review is for LANDMARK music releases, things like Double Nickels on the Dime, Sgt. Pepper's, Thriller, whatever genre. But The Vandals' Christmas getting 5 stars? Be honest. No way. And this from someone who genuinely enjoys the Vandals. The album is goofy/fun with the occasionally mordant social criticism, but it's nothing to loose sleep over. "Oi! To the World" is my favorite track here, and even it is more than a little dopey, in terms of lyrics. I could make some of my preceding statements about almost anything reviewed out there, but somewhere someone has to say something. A 5 star review would imply that the album is a must-buy. A 5 star review for an album like this makes me wanna go down and start running off copies of the deed to the Brooklyn Bridge.

  4. I think every genre of music with the possible exception of death metal has its christmas albums. The Vandals's Oi to the World! is hardly original, there have been punk Christmas compilations since the late 70s, but this one is one of the better punk takes on Christmas. Each song rings with juvenille humour and sardonic holiday cheer.

Not every song is a Christmas classic, but some that really shine are "Gun for Christmas" and "My First Christmas as a Woman." Those two songs have concepts that carry them through whatever troubles they might have had. Hell, just saying the words "gun for christmas" will get a chuckle out of many people. "Christmastime for My Penis" is an ode to the organ that has kept our specie alive for the past few million years (even the femenists need to thank it a little).

Some of the songs are medioce, "C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S" comes to mind right off the bat, but overall, this album is one of the more memborable Christmas albums ever made. OI to the world and everybody wins.

  5. This may not be the ideal album for the entire family sitting around the fireplace on Christmas Eve, but it's still a Christmas classic. "My Frst X-mas (as a Woman)" and "Christmas Time for My [...]" are sweetly melodic and and the lyrics are hilarious. "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies" is a little more hardcore but the theme from The Nutcracker is cleverly woven into the electric guitar insanity. There is something here for people of all sorts of musical tastes, and it makes an excellent offbeat gift for people other than your grandparents.

  1. I'm so old, I had this cassette when I was in high school. I was one of the white suburban punks who discovered this band on the Repo Man soundtrack. I haven't dragged the CD out in 10 years and now at the tender age of 40, I can't believe how FANTASTIC this thing is! It sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday.

You kids today should thank the rock gods for this band. They were doing what you are now hearing in 1983!

  2. this is something noone else could do and will ever try.original offbeat punk that is legendary.I wish is could be recorded better but they redid most of it with still cyco.like it or not it's stil in print and is a classic cd.

  3. This is still my favorite Suicidal CD. If you're only going to get one Suicidal Tendencies CD, get this one.

  4. I just recenty heard of this band from a friend of mine. I am now hooked on Suicidal Tendencies. Even tho I was like 1 year old when this album came out. Do yourself a favor and buy it, you want regret it.

  5. I bought this record (LP) in 1986 after hearing Institutionalized. I recorded that song onto cassette tape, listened to the record, and was so shocked (imagine--at age 16? What a p**sy) with some of the content I smashed the record outside on the sidewalk. Cut to some 19 years later, I see a re-issue colored-vinyl LP at Newbury Comics and decide I must have this, I must re-claim and face that which drove me to violently destroy a violent album full of rage. The result?

This record is sick, and it's the best sick I've ever heard. Classic, classic, classic. A must-own as a record of pure insanity.
