  1. I'm forced to listen to this at work and actually feel physical pain. It's often described as mellow (maybe in a drug-induced comma), but all I can think of is banal, trite, insipid, an American Idol early reject maybe. Anthems for beer-belching yahoos? Most of the surfers I know listen to punk. Anyway, expand your consciousness if possible and pick up Richard Thompson, Edwynn Collins and Nick Drake for starters, money better spent.

  2. Been a Jack Johnson fan for a few years now, his stuff is great. Makes you want to kick back on the beach with a chair, an umbrella, and possibly an adult beverage and let the worries of the world slip away!

  3. I own all of Jack's cd's and I have to say this one is my favorite out of all of them including "Sleep Through The Static". I don't know what it is but I keep coming back to this record. I can't get these collection of songs out of my head. What do you think? I know there are some others that feel the same.

  4. This CD is really, really good! I just found out about Jack Johnson and he is so laid back and upbeat at the same time! It's great music for any time, party, relaxing, cleaning house, exercising, cooking, any time! I consider myself to be a very good judge when it comes to music and J.J. is a 10 in my opinion! Good for all ages!

  5. Jack has done a great job creating an album with a lot of continuity in the songs..it makes for an hour of really easy listening, especially if you just need to "get away."

  2. This album was way good, in fact ALL Jack Johnson music is way good. He makes some great mellow/lazy surf rockin' music. Although, this album wasn't as good as his other three. But it still was rockin' and that's the point. Anybody who plays the guitar will like Jack Johnson's music.
Taylor had the coolest into i have ever heard!
I also enjoyed Holes to Heaven because it had the same tune as Jack Johnson's previous soundtrack hit, Moonshine.
And one last thing, Jack Johnson is NOT a knock off of the Dave Matthews Band!!

  3. I absolutely love this album, in my opinion, it's jack's best album. and i own all of them. It's one that you can listen to over and over and it doesn't get old. Every single song is great, but my favorites are: Traffic in the Sky, Gone, Rodeo Clowns, Cocoon, Cookie Jar, and Mediocre Bad Guys. I love the mellow, chilled out, beachy vibe that's present in all of his music. I can't wait to buy his next album.

  4. Recently discovered JJ in the last year or so...now I have all his CD's with this one being the latest purchase. His music and talent is great. I was not disappointed at all.

  5. This guy is way overhyped, songwriting is whiny and lacks any facts or knowledge. Guitar playing is really childish skittishes that do not really portray any talent past knowing 3 chords. Tries to act like he is some voice that represents youth but fails miserably. I added this CD to my list of things I wipe with. If you really want to hear an acoustical session that proves this guy sux, there are some others out there. Marketing is the key in todays music world instead of talent and that is why this guy sells records. The lyrics suk, he is just crying and whining from visuals he gets from NPR or something, and that alone is enough to put someone to sleep. Boring, bad and will not be heard of in twenty years. I wish the next Hendrix or Neil Young would please stand up because the posers in here right now annoy me.

  1. nothing compared to his father... listen to starsailor and lorca if you are really into music...

  2. This is a great cd to drive to or listen to in your home. Jeff Buckley's beautiful voice and guitar playing sweep you up and make you feel good all over.

  3. To my ear, this is one of the most overrated albums I have heard. Not that it's bad. It's just all right. There is simply nothing here that merits the gushing accolades many of Buckley's fans heap upon it. Or maybe I just don't connect with it. After repeated listenings. If you can get your hands on a copy, you'd do well to listen to it before buying your own based on its hype. You may becomes as enamored as many others have. You find find it so-so as I do. Or you may even fall into the category with several people I know who find it to be unbearably boring.

  4. I bought this CD for ONE song....Halleluah...however you spell it. :) I LOVE that song. My husband, on the other hand, cannot stand the cd. I think it is well done and really enjoy it. :)

  5. In love -- it's the only way I can describe how I feel about this album.
It has been in my top 5 favorite albums of all time for a while now.
Jeff has the most amazing voice....with such an unbelievable range.
The reason I felt compelled to write a review here (after owning the album for so so long) is because I was shocked at the amount of people who said that besides "Hallelujah", the album is no good. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??! Were these people listening to the same album that the rest of us have come to know as pure magic? I'm beginning to wonder if people even know what REAL music is anymore.

I have listened to the entire album hundreds of times by now, and it still blows me away. What an absolutely gifted talent he was. It's truly a shame that he left the world so soon.

  1. Who doesn't like Jack Johnson!?! I listen to this one every morning, because of the relaxed (yet upbeat) music. Good buy!

  2. Jack Johnson is great! It is a good mellow sound, not too hard rock. If you like good mellow music, go for this cd!

  3. This stuff could potentially groove if they had a singer with more vocal presence (doesn't whisper his way through the tunes). Either way, IMO, it's good stuff that has yet to be realized by a better singer. I'm just not feeling it. Almost Damien Rice, but not as eclectic/quirky....just one person's opinion, try to be objective.

  4. Although this is his first or one of his first cds, it is one of his best. It's typical Jack Johnson!

  5. I like this music. Perfect for what I need it for. Teaching college students a fitness class. In great condition

5 comments about Pieces of You.

  1. First of all, I'm a really big fan of Jewel, I think she's one of the best singer/songwriters of all time.

On "Pieces Of You" I think the title track, "Near You Always," "Adrian," "I'm Sensitive," "You Were Meant For Me" and "Emily" are all great songs, both vocally and lyrically. I find that with the rest of the songs, the songwriting is still great but the vocals are what really lets the songs down. Jewel has always managed to write good lyrics that are interesting, she's written great stories like "Adrian," "Fat Boy," "Till We Run Out Of Road," "Stand," "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland," "Good Day," "Stephenville, TX" or "Rosey And Mick" - the love songs she writes are never cheesey, she just always keeps the writing really good.

Her vocals on this album (other than the six songs I mentioned, which I don't just think are alright songs, they're great songs) are very awkward, they're not easy on the ears at all, and Jewel has clearly learnt from this as she hasn't sang in this style since, she has said she doesn't know why this album sold over 11 million copies worldwide and I agree, when I think that her other albums combined haven't sold as many as this album, I find it sad, I just can't understand how "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland" is her only album not to sell over a million copies, the vocals on all her albums other than this one are on a high level, I guess the positive thing though is that Jewel is sticking to singing in the best way she can and isn't going back to singing in the way she does here.

  2. Has anyone ever really listened to some of the lyrics by Jewel? She's really twisted in the head. Her mellow tone covers a lot of the dysfunctional lyrics though. But the songs Daddy, Adrian, and a few of the others just make me wonder what kind of childhood she had. Other than that, this Cd is pretty good. i like a few of the songs on there and like I said, she has a mellow tone. It's comforting when you don't pay any attention to the lyrics.

  3. Many fans of Jewel's music today may be surprised if they ever take the time to listen to her debut album `Pieces of You'. Stripped of the polish and shine that her newer music embodies and presented in a raw and delicate manner; the tracks on `Pieces of You' are some of her most emotional and touching work to date. This album is collectively perfect, truly inspiring and resonant from start to finish; a beautiful collection of heart reaching songs that embellish this beauty's magnificent voice; literally and figuratively.

I'm sure just about everyone has heard Jewel's singles off this album; `Who Will Save Your Soul', `Foolish Games' and `You Were Meant for Me'; but what they most likely haven't heard is the album versions of these songs. Yes, all three of these tracks were polished and cleaned up for the radio and thus were presented to the public in commercial form. Listen to the rawness of the brilliant `Foolish Games' (in my humble opinion one of the greatest songs ever written and or performed) then you will see first hand the talent this singer/songwriter possesses. `Who Will Save Your Soul' opens the album with some spunk, a track that gives us a taste of Jewel's marvelous baritone as well as her sarcastic lyrical message. `You Were Meant for Me' is probably her most popular track to date, the song that immediately is identified to her. It's a beautiful track that serves as a great example of the depth of her talent.

Some have made mention of the fact that some of the tracks here are recorded live. I don't see how this is a bad thing, and if it bothers you then obviously you don't appreciate the brand of music that Jewel is presenting here. This is her passion, her drive and she is recording it in a way that expresses that. So on tracks like `Little Sister' when she sounds out of breath or on `Near You Always' where you can hear her breathing or on `Angel Standing By' when her chords are muted and rough the listener should, instead of balking, be enthralled at the experience these tracks are delivering to us. We can feel her love and devotion to her music with every strum of the guitar.

There are a few tracks that touch deeper than others; tracks like the aforementioned `Foolish Games' (I swear, this song is utter perfection) and `Angel Standing By' (so graceful and elegant) as well as `Adrian' and the title track `Pieces of You'. `Adrian' is a very sad and emotionally stirring song about a young boy and a tragic accident and the love surrounding him. It brings tears to my eyes. `Pieces of You' is a pivotal track here, a song that lyrically takes the album to another level. It says, in simple words, so much here about the world in which we live and the people we've become. `Daddy' is another song that has deep resonance (and no, this is not about Jewel's father, whom she claims to love very much). This is a track I'm sure will bring on the floodgates to quite a few listeners.

Jewel's folk roots can be seen full throttle on tracks like `Painters' and `Don't', two very impressive tracks. `I'm Sensitive' is fun and fresh and is extremely entertaining and `Morning Song' is cheeky and similar to `You Were Meant for Me' in structure and delivery. The closing track `Amen' is utterly flawless, a beautiful way to close out a brilliant album. It's graceful and intriguing and commanding of our attention. As the track comes to a close we are compelled to listen to it again.

`Pieces of You' is Jewel's best album, honestly. It is untouched and real, an album that is entirely her own. She has compiled music that means something to her and in the end that is what matters to the listener. If the artist feels connected to their music that will transcend through the stereo and into the ears and minds of their audience and thus it will mean something to us.

I love Jewel, and I love her newer music as well, but nothing she has done since has compared to the creativity and passion she has brought to this stunning debut. Jewel continues to shine, but this album is where she has shone the brightest.

  4. At twenty-one, Jewel released smash hits, mostly written by herself. She has a beautiful voice and still has one today. Unfortunately there is one problem with this album because "You Were Meant for Me" is the album version and not the radio version most stations play. Anyways, the album still has Jewel's beautiful voice on her original soft song compositions. "Who Will Save Your Soul" is a classic as well. This is a must for any Jewel fan.

  5. Why do I keep getting live albums that don't say "live" anywhere?? It's frustrating. I would like to know what I'm getting and nowhere did the description of this cd or anywhere else on the website say it was live.

5 comments about Tidal.

  1. With her rich alto voice, talents on the piano, and poetic lyrics, Apple's 1996 debut album, Tidal, remains her best album yet, in my opinion. Rich in hit singles ("Shadowboxer," "Slow Like Honey," "Sleep to Dream," "The First Taste," "Criminal," and "Never Is a Promise"), the album also resulted in a Tidal-wave of controversary following Apple's fiery comments at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards and 1998 Grammy Awards ceremonies. "Gotta love that Sullen Girl," I thought to myself at the time, and my opinion hasn't changed. There's not a bad Apple in the bunch of album tracks on Tidal:

    1. Sleep To Dream
    2. Sullen Girl
    3. Shadowboxer
    4. Criminal
    5. Slow Like Honey
    6. The First Taste
    7. Never Is A Promise
    8. The Child Is Gone
    9. Pale September
    10. Carrion

    G. Merritt

  2. Have not heard much from Ms Apple except for radio play. Ordered three compact disks at once. Have been working my way thru them. Neither good or bad. Interesting production.

  3. Two great songs criminal and sleep to dream are great. the rest is somber and a little bit to coffee house for my taste. Great price and worth the money.

  4. The lyrics to this music could easily be some of the best modern poetry of popular music. I really like some of the lines; for example, "he goes along just as a waterlily . . . gentle on the surface of his thoughts his body floats." Most of the lyrics possess this excellent poetic craftsmanship. They contain an inner meaning beyond their surface repose.

I also like the uneasy, moodiness of the music. It's lulling at times, but has a discordant air to it, mostly precipitated by minor keys -- which creates an off-balance accompaniment to the double-edged lyrics.

I am not sure why I decided to review this cd now -- but I have been listening to this music again recently, and was impressed by the fact that I still like it.

Last but not least, this cd wouldn't have been as impressive without the fine arrangements and musicians who helped Apple create this wonderful cd. The solo pianist on "Criminal" for example, doing that little cadenza-like arrangement at the end of the song, and the musicians on "First Taste" (which sort of reminds me of a Goblinesque work from a Dario Argento film for some reason), really bring Apple's ideas to life here.

  5. Fiona Apple is by far one of the most amazing artists of our time. Her 3 CD discography is needed in every music collection.

  1. I am a fan of Ben Harpers. Have been since the '90's. I love his vision of music. His soulful vocals. The lyrics of this cd and the energy that went into it, make it my favorite all time of his albums. I even own his newer ones, they still do not compare. This is where it all started....

  2. This terrific project's songs are nimble, soulful, catchy, and meaningful. I've heard Harper's entire (sometimes uneven) catalog, and this is his most inspired work.

  3. This is a solid record glad I picked it up. Probably the best all around of Ben Harpers.

  4. Ben can say so much in just one word. The tracks are mostly deep acoustic that you can jam along to.

  5. For an artist such as Ben Harper, who's reflective blend of acoustic soul & organic stripped down blues and R&B, coupled with his emotional singer/songwriter approach gave his debut album "Welcome to the Cruel World" a great starting point, for those tired of music lacking any intellectual content. But it was this, his fiery politicised second album "Fight for your mind", that he was to truly make his mark on the musical landscape.

This is a intimate and deeply introspective record, that not only looks inwards, but frequently looks at the world from the perspective of a enraged musical poet (Harper's influences such as: Dylan, Hendrix, Bob Marley, are clear to see). Because for a track like "Another Lonely Day" which is largely minimal in its instrumentation, and relies mostly on Ben's soul-folk singing to carry the emotional impact of this song, (think stripped back folk, with some lovely slide guitar), it went some way to prove that Ben wanted people to hear what he had to say, rather than just purely focus on the music.

"Burn one Down" which is actually a Pro-weed song, with Harper brazenly declaring ""if you don't like my fire, then don't come around, yes I'm gonna burn one down.", shows that Ben like the protest songs of someone like Dylan, many years before him for instance, hasn't shy-ed away from controversial subject matters.

"Ground on Down" is unquestionably my favourite track, Ben hooks up the electric guitar for a occasionally feedback drenched throwdown, that has more place on a rock album, such is its explosive energy, with Harper assuming the lyrical stance of a righteous commentator over the energetic guitar that is probably the nearest he's come to sounding like an infuriated Jimi Hendrix, in this insistent, almost slightly aggressive rock-out.

There is an undeniable sense of Harper wanting to get a lot of his chest, as quite of few of the songs deal with social/racial injustice to some degree, as "Fight For your Mind" & "Oppression" immediately spring to mind, with unsettling guitar tones which range from poignant one minute, to curiously uplifting the next. Although none of this would mean anything without some inspired writing by Harper, that easily surpasses his debut in structure and musical dynamics. In fact Ben would never truly match (much less surpass what was achieved here), this level of articulation and poetic lyrical content, although with impressively strong musical arrangements.

If your looking for a Ben Harper Cd, and your not interested in collecting his albums, then without doubt Its widely known that this was his most significant effort on the album market, and although his other albums are certainly worth a look if you like his music. The combination of righteous finger pointing, consice lyrics and, cerebral blues-folk would never quite have the same bite, as this, his finest album.

  1. This is my first purchase of a Catpower CD. I choose this one given its good reviews. In general, I like the CD. It is extremely mellow and, overall, the songs sound nothing like the origials. I recommend listening to the song samples if you are unsure about purchasing the CD.

  2. There are one or two really good cuts, notably, Satisaction. The rest of the CD seems dreary and repetitive. She does have an amazing voice, however. I'd say, just buy the cuts you like.

  3. I arrived at Cat Power from her two tracks on the WKW soundtrack for 'My Blueberry Nights'. Inspired by what I heard I ordered her catalogue from Amazon. It is arriving in instalments and so this is my first 'full' experience of what Cat Power is all about. Having played the CD ten times since it arrived yesterday I can say with absolute clarity that this is a CD of great worth and utmost originality; a rare CD that actually contributes and shapes the greater musical consciousness - that is the antithesis to the majority of 'music' that either stalls progress or reverses it. And all this from an album of covers; singing the words of others. Amazing. The strength of this CD lies in three areas, firstly in the choice of her song selection, secondly obviously in her voice and thirdly in the desire the singer has to say something, to make a statement, to add her wash of colour over some pretty well-painted tunes. To follow up on the last point, what she succeeds in doing is essentially erasing that which went before and starting anew. Take for example track #1, the Rolling Stones' 'Satisfaction'. The idea of covering that is a pretty daunting one, how does one make it original, yet pay homage to one of the worlds' most listened to songs? an enigma of immense difficulties. Yet, what she has done is to take that song, and to make it her own, and dare I say it (as with other tracks), she has actually BETTERED the original. Bettered the original of 'Satisfaction'? - I would argue so. She has achieved the impossible. And she has achieved all this with a very sultry, down-tempo offering which would be easy to mistake for elevator music or filler if you weren't properly paying attention.

I would suggest that if you have arrived at this page, they you should not hesitate to buy this CD, I can't see how anyone with a genuine interest in either music - real music, or self-expressive musical artists, could not find this CD anything other than enthralling and enigmatically wondrous.

    Personal favourites:
    Track #1 (I can't get no) Satisfaction
    Track #2 Kingsport Town

N.B. People often draw the mis-conclusions between Cat Power and Natalie Merchant or Feist. Whilst I love all three I think there are no real similarities, save the quirky female and the penchant for good ballads. Each one has their own style and should not be 'boxed' or compared.

  4. The goal of this CD is to distill the beauty from others' songs, and expose it, unhidden and unobscured to the world. From these songs, you can tell that this woman has identified and captured the heart of the songs, the little nuggets of truth nestled within layers of confusion, and it is beautiful. The album is trying to be transparent where everyone else is trying to hide the musical ball. If you have ever listened to songs looking for these nuggets, for the real purpose and source of a song, you will hold this album deep in your heart and can ease the loneliness of feeling like you are the only one who can see.

  5. Since falling in love with The Greatest, I've found it difficult to really enjoy her earlier albums. It seemed to me that they were more avenues for her own catharsis than adequate representations of her talent. The focus-being completely independent the first two albums, and on a rather small label up until her newest release-did not seem to be primarily on the music: her lyricism was good-at times astounding-but her musicianship was only moderately interesting and her voice did not sound like it does today. Although there are a few gems in her back catalogue that truly shine, most of the songs are too raw, hard, or unpolished to create a pleasant listening experience (they seem to work on some level in the background, or if you're really down, but they're difficult to love). The nature of her (past) music makes sense, considering her battles with alcoholism and depression.

After taking a couple years off from music after her 1996 album What Would the Community Think, she released a collection of covers she'd played on the road between 1998 and 1999. It's very interesting how much different the sound of this record is from her prior releases, and even You Are Free, which came out three years later. Perhaps the main difference is that there is no evidence of any other musicians: it's only Chan. She mostly plays her guitar, sometimes the piano, which allows her gentle, smokey voice to be heard as it should without detracting from its almost unnverving intimacy. She covers The Rolling Stones (I don't know if I've ever heard a more radically satisfying cover of a song than her version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"), Lou Reed, her (ex?) boyfriend Bill Callahan of Smog, and even herself, transforming each song into something nobody else ever could. The most similar song on The Greatest would have to be "Where is My Love," but somehow the songs on this album each have a weighty significance, like she inspected each of them with her heart and expects us to (i.e. knows we will) do the same. Chan's "Wild is the Wind" is perhaps the most hauntingly poignant, soul-piercing song I've ever heard. I absolutely love this album. It is a supremely satisfying listen straight through, and is best suited for listening at night, with quiet stillness, disturbed only by Chan's hauntingly beautiful voice.

5 comments about XO.

  1. Emerging from the shadow of Kurt Cobain in the late 90's, Elliott Smith was perhaps the greatest singer songwriter of his generation. Smith's genius was his unabashedly honest, naked, poetic lyricism that was so beautifully complemented by his unpretentiousness acoustic guitar. Like none that came before him, Smith delivers note after note of haunted, sparkling melancholy. Far from gloomy, his songs radiate with incredible emotional intensity. Combining an unbridled punk rage within the guise of an acoustic folk song, his songs speak for themselves. Reflective and introspective, each song unfolds like a delicately wrapped package, revealing itself slowly. Smith's songs present themselves like late night thoughts that just won't go away. Concerning themselves with drug abuse, depression, and troubled relationships, Smith exorcises his inner demons and releases them in a beautiful, blinding, luminosity, albeit born from dark, painful emotional despair.

Almost immediately following the release of Good Will Hunting, Smith's popularity exploded overnight. With that popularity followed an offer from a bigger studio with more opportunity. What inevitably followed was a stylistic change in the sound that Smith had become known for. Who knows what XO would have sounded like had he not been nominated for an Academy Award. But XO afforded Smith the chance to embellish his sound with lush production and a rich, full bodied and arguably better sound. A few songs (Tommorrow, Tommorrow, Pitseleh) retain the simplicity of his earlier work). XO is undeniably Smith, the songwriting, the trademark guitar, the voice. Smith's album benefited from increased publicity, and XO would go on to become his best selling album. It is also arguably his most easily accessible album, which has drawn comparisons to The Beach Boys masterpiece Pet Sounds. You will catch yourself singing along to the melody before you realize what he is singing about. Lyrically, XO is just as dark as any of his previous efforts, this time there are just more lights. Perhaps best described as punk rage and despair with a sensitivity. XO is catchy and full bodied, reminiscent of The Beatles and 60's pop. The work on XO is just as complex lyrically as anything he has ever done, yet gorgeous ballads that are layered with pianos, guitars and drums. The result is a fully realized body of work of incredible impact. Smith takes full advantage to show off his proficiency on the piano on several tracks. From the driving guitars of "Amity", to "A Question Mark" XO is no doubt a rock album. Waltz #1 is a gorgeous, soaring, ballad that stands out among as one of the best. No longer a quiet hushed whisper, Smith's incredible singing voice is given the chance to soar, and soar it truly does. His voice truly resonates on songs like Waltz #1 and I Didn't Understand. It is just as easy to imagine the songs without the production, just as acoustic songs. Elliott Smith was a huge Beatles fan and it shows here. The melodies are stronger and catchier than ever. Each new layer fleshes his sound out almost adding another emotional layer. The result is a poppier, catchier sound. Each song flows into the next, and there isn't a dull song on the album. Soaring melodies and gorgeous harmony, supplemented by lush instrumentation allow Smith's songs to truly soar. XO explodes in a kaleidoscopic display of fireworks reaching for the heavens. XO may lose many of the purists who prefer the simple acoustic, although it is undeniable his music is still emotionally resonating.

  2. I had heard a few mp3s from friends and so I got into him. would recommend

  3. Elliott Smith rarely recorded anything less than great, but XO is one of his strongest albums. In a discography of great work this album is outstanding and deserves praise.

  4. This has always been my favorite album by Elliott Smith. The more I listen to Either/Or the more I find it hard to decide between the two, but I still think that in the "desert island" situation I'd go with XO. I thought about reviewing each song but I just don't think it's necessary, everyone should own this album. I have bought it as gifts for several of my family members that don't know who Elliott Smith was. Give the gift of music, give XO! Somehow he makes the f word sound pretty. That's gotta count for something.

  5. I am gonna keep it simple. If you like good music and you havent listened to any of Smith's work do not hesitate to buy this album. I started with his first album and worked my way onward to the last one released. I recomend all of his work.
