  1. For whatever reason, there are a lot of demos, etc. that are not included that ARE available on a variety of bootleg products that I don't think Becker and Fagen are overly happy about.

Becker and Fagen, even though they are perfectionists, should allow the demos, etc. to be released. I would think they would be happy to (like Frank Zappa did) "BEAT THE BOOTS" by releasing these rarities (if they still exist in some dark, dank MCA vault) and let them be paid for their efforts as well as reward the "loyal fandom".

In particular, I'd like to see the release of the two first (pre-Can't Buy a Thrill) single tracks ("Dallas"/"Sail The Waterway") that have only been released on the original PROBE single (1972) and a British "Plus 4" series LP in the late '70's.

Are we going to hear something special? Something we've never heard before elsewhere? Is that a 2" inch tape in their pocket or are they just happy to see us? Ahem......

    C'mon guys.... ANTE UP!

  2. Outstanding collection of SD Hits that all will be singing at times that you do not realize. I catch myself waking up hearing this CD as well as singing in the showers. Enough Said!!

  3. A classic for Steely Dan band fans!!!! One of a kind. Collectors- enjoy!!

  4. In the days that I was young en pretty I used to listen to Deep Purple, Rainbow, Queen. The more heavy kind of music so to speak.
Today I still feel young but have passed the 40 a few years ago. "New" music came into my life, such as Pink Martini, the bluesy side of Chris Rea and this more then splendid box of Steely Dan.
Unfortunately I have missed the guys at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. But a friend of mine did not and he was blown away by their music. A colleague of mine has recommended me this box. My last words for this review are: BUY THIS BOX PEOPLE, IT'S "TOPPIE!"

  5. I've come to love Steely Dan's music because it reminds me of when I was just a kid and my uncles would have it cranked at family get togethers chilling out while me and my cousins ran around, now that I'm 33 I remember it and from listening to local "Classic Rock" radio stations, though these stations limit SD airplay to the more popular tracks i.e. Peg, Rikki, Hey 19, etc. I became very intrigued by the unique sound, lyrics, and complexity of these cuts - I had to have more!

I purchased Citizen Steely Dan and was very pleased and more astonished by how great this band is; asking myself why on earth cant these radio stations play a wider variety of SD tracks, but I guess they do that with all great bands. This is one of the greatest box sets I have ever gotten my hands on, every Steely Dan fan should not be with out and anyone who enjoys the more popular songs that get frequent airplay would definetly enjoy and not be disapointed with the 66 tracks designated on this release. I am totally pleased with this collection!!!

5 comments about The Capitol Albums Vol. 1.

  1. I grew up in the US in the 60's and this is how i remember the BEATLES lp's.If you are a true lover of the GREATEST band in the history of music. Well, you should be ordering this as you read this review!!!! I'll be ordering vol. 2 soon.

  2. In 1987 The English version of the Beatles catalog was released in America on CD for the first time. Having been American and being used to the American versions of the Beatles catalog, I was a little disappointed.
I used to wonder if we would ever see the American version on the market again.
The British versions have nothing wrong with them, and I enjoy them alot. They are simply not the same.
To me the whole point is, many American and English versions differ. So if they were the same, there would be no point in collecting the American versions.
I enjoying hearing the sitar that is missing in Norweigen Wood or some of the differences the collections have.
I am a Beatles collector and will buy an entire CD for just a small instrumental difference or a small difference in lyrics.
To me this is what makes the entire collection worth while.
I like to hear the reverb in I Feel Fine or She's A Woman. I also enjoy the sound of the American discs. Over the years I heard the American albums and got used to hearing the songs in a certain order. When the English versions came out in 1987 I had to look a little harder to find my favorite songs, because the album song orders had changed. Rubber Soul and Revolver just were not the same anymore. I also have to wonder if the album that was released about 1982 called "Rarities" will be released. It will also be interesting to see if the Live album at the Hollywood Bowl in 1964 and 1965 will be released again.
I hope and pray that Capitol releses another volume with Revolver and possibly Yesterday and Today, as well as the few others that were passed over. This collection, as the heading says is for the collector who has to have it all.
The positive side of this is, it feels like an old friend has come back to be with you.........................Now I can remonisce about the 60's the way I remember them.

  3. As an ageing fan who fondly remembers Beatlemania and occasionally feels a certain nostalgia for it all, I myself am not particularly interested in resurrecting all the hatchet-job releases we got on this side of the pond, although I completely understand long-time fans' desire to re-obtain the mixes they prefer. Too many of these albums make little stylistic sense and are, strictly speaking, jumbled and misleading versions of the real thing, although being The Fab Four, they're still good listening.

Please, Capitol/EMI, this is what I'd like instead:

    1. A complete overhaul of the entire catalogue - all of the Parlophone LPs. Please supplement each album with contemporaneously recorded (or most appropriately so) 45 RPM releases and EPs and dump those hideous PAST MASTERS discs. So, for instance, RUBBER SOUL gets "Day Tripper"/"We Can Work It Out", REVOLVER gets "Paperback Writer"/"Rain", PEPPER gets "Penny Lane"/"Strawberry Fields" and MMT still gets "All You Need Is Love" and "Hello Goodbye". Just tack them onto the beginning or end of the disc. So simple. The early LPs would benefit greatly from this approach, too.

    2. A proper remastering. Bring the volume of the guys' instruments back up where it's supposed to be. Correct the anachronistic imbalance in the voices which, in the present British discs, uncomfortably emphasizes the "lead" vocalist. (Their chorus was never intended to sound like that; it was the 1960s - not the 1980s.) Lose the bizarre fetish for "previously unheard details" like giggles and snapping fingers. (Who cares about that?) Please get rid of the fake stereo; mono is plenty exciting when it's properly mixed. George Martin knew that. The Beatles knew that. And the fans who purchased millions of 45s knew it, too.

    3. And finally, please issue, as an adjunct to the complete British set, A HARD DAY'S NIGHT (Go get George Martin's instrumentals from UA) and thanks for having done HELP! and RUBBER SOUL.

    This is what we need.

PS. Oh yeah, remember the reverb in "I Feel Fine" and "She's a Woman", too!

  4. Love the CDs and there's plenty to read about them elsewhere, but the packaging is really as crappy as you've read--you either have to pry the outer box open with your fingers and yank or whack the back of it to get the inner package out. Once you do that, it's just the opposite. On one of my first two handlings, all the replica albums fell to the floor and two of the CDs fell out since there is no internal sleeve to hold them in place. If you want to store the long box away and just use the inner, it can be folded in two and placed in your CD rack, but as a flimsy piece of cardboard with no information printed on the end. For the money, we deserved more.

  5. I bought this set (along with Vol.2) for the stereo mixes of all the Beatles' early songs, and was not disappointed. In fact, on many of the songs I was very pleasantly surprised! As you might expect, the sound gets progressively better from the first "album" to the last.

On "Meet the Beatles", for the most part, you hear the voice(s) on one side and the instruments on the other, which is probably the most that could be done with the original masters. Still, it's better than mono, with more audible detail and "presence". One caution: The transfer level is "hot", just a hair short of clipping, so better to turn down the volume control before pressing the Play button! That goes for all the CDs in this set.

The "Second Album" has the least satisfying sound. The "hot" transfer and lack of dynamics (did they use compression?) make for a feeling of relentless pounding that's a little hard to take after a while. However, many of the songs are in true stereo, with vocals in the center and different instruments on left and right, so they are still preferable to the mono mixes.

The sound on "Something New" and "Beatles 65" varies from one song to the next, but on several of the songs, the sound is quite remarkable, with a true stereo image, pinpoint clarity and fine detail. For example, listen to the nicely captured guitar stylings on "I'll Be Back" (from "Beatles 65"). Unfortunately, on one of my favorite songs, "I Feel Fine", I would have to describe the sound as "smeared"; for an excellent stereo transfer of this song, you will have to buy the 2-CD set "The Beatles / 1962-1966".

I got a new, sealed copy of this set from an Amazon "third-party" seller, at a deep discount, probably because it is one of the early releases with the "wrong" mono transfers. But who needs the mono mixes, anyway?

As for the packaging, which everyone seems to hate, I liked the mini original album covers, but would have preferred jewel cases - Volumes 1 & 2 could have been released on 4 CDs, at half the price, by leaving out the mono mixes and putting two albums on each CD, with the album covers pictured on the insert. So one star off for that. Anyway, for those of us who mainly listen to copies of CDs on HD or portable media, the packaging isn't such a big issue.

To sum it all up: Finally some decent stereo mixes of the early Beatles - thank you, Capitol!

5 comments about Decade.

  1. How can an album as important as this one be allowed to remain in it's current state of "not yet remastered" disrepair? Forcrisake, every other chunk of trite music out there from the 70's and 80's has been remastered. Either Neil is going to launch the mother of all box sets, or someone has just gotten very lazy.

  2. The music would be a fine introduction to early Neil Young, but the fidelity sounds like an old car radio playing through your friend Larry's coat. Every track that is available elsewhere sounds better elsewhere. (Compare "Like a Hurricane" on this album to the one on "American Stars n Bars," which is HDCD in standard release.) If you simply must have some of the oddball cuts it doesn't look like you have much choice. Actually, the smart thing to do would be to wait until Young's back catalogue gets the audiophile treatment.

  3. Spanning Neil Young's career form 1966 to 1976 (and leaving no stone unturned), Decade is an epic collection of songs, a glorious encapsulation of one of the greatest discographies ever recorded. As an introduction to the wonderful world of Neil, it can't be beat; every one of the eclectic artist's passions is on full display here, from the apocalyptic electric guitar workouts of "Down By The River" and "Cowgirl In The Sand" to the soul-shaking folk introspection of "Old Man" and "Heart Of Gold." As such, every facet of Young's genius can be found somewhere on this record. One listen to the artist's lopsided, circuitous evolution, from the acid-dream folk rock of his early days with Buffalo Springfield to his tenure as the surreally bitter poet laureate of the post-Vietnam era, should convince anybody that Neil Young was a unique and compelling artist, an inspired madman howling from a dark and gorgeous dream world.

Ahem. The music found herein is simply fantastic. These two discs are saturated with masterpieces. Aside from the aforementioned tracks, we've got dreamweaving classics such as "Expecting To Fly" and "Broken Arrow," as well as the tortured sonic soundscape of "Cortez The Killer." The spooked psych-soul of "The Old Laughing Lady" slams headlong into the crunching rock anthem "Cinnamon Girl," birthing the tortured outrage of "Southern Man" and "Ohio" in the process. And then there's the quiet apocalypse of "After The Gold Rush," the mournful haze of "Sugar Mountain," the raw sting of "The Needle And The Damage Done," and the mangled death funk of "Tonight's The Night (Part 1)." Sure, these songs (most of them, anyway) can be found on albums that you should already have (such as Harvest, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and Tonight's The Night), but Decade is still a worthy purchase for the simple reason that before you buy it, "Like A Hurricane" and "Campaigner" won't be in your collection. After you buy it, they will be. Plus, collection or not, its sounds great to listen to these 35 songs in this order.

  4. There are songs on this album that I don't have on any of the many Neil Young albums I have. This was the greatest decade of Neil's career. I love every single album and song he came out with at that time. Even Time Fades Away, which Neil himself doesn't like.

  5. Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3GU0T8QV9TD5Q I've liked Neil Young and his music for almost 40 years. I couldn't like him anymore than I always have, but I like his music now more than ever. There are songs I like now that in the past I got deathly tired of, that I was indifferent to, and that I actively disliked.

Hopefully this video will give you an idea of how I feel about his music. Check out my website via my profile to see more samples of JumpRock and see how easily I think you can learn to do the same. Nothing to buy and no lessons - it's all there for free - I'm just promoting myself and my ideas about exercise and motivation.

I haven't noticed any volume problems on the lp or cd or the samples playable here. Don't know about the import.

There are still times when I'm listening to Launchcast and I think "Who's this clown?", and I turn to skip it, and it's Neil Young, so I stop and listen. (Qualifier - That's not a criticism - Neil Young can start in the most discordant place imaginable and bring out the melody and make the most awkward phrasings work by extending a syllable or whatever in a way that doesn't seem feasible until you hear it. But sometime when it first catches me off guard - I don't think - hey, that's Neil Young - I just hear the discord.). Anytime it's Neil Young, you should do the same. You may still not like it, but maybe you just haven't heard it enough times or for enough years.

5 comments about Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection 1959-1971.

  1. JULY 2008 REVIEW: I purchased this particular box set a little over a month ago, and I must say: it does NOT disappoint. You really can't complain; although the box set was released several years ago, and therefore the early 1990's CD mastering here isn't necessarily as strong and powerful sounding as a 2008 mastering might be, the tracks presented here are bright and clear. Approximately 100 tracks fill out this 4-CD box set, and most of the songs are winners. And they are presented here in their original mono sound mixes as originally released (an apparent problem for some reviewers here, but I had no issue with it; the songs sound the same as they always have). I was certainly surprised upon listening, track after track, that I was familiar with almost every song on the set. And this many songs for the price!?! Right now, you really can't beat it.
I am very aware of the new MOTOWN box sets chronicling every "single" released over the years ("The Complete Singles Collection-1967" for example), but at roughly 100 bucks each, those exhaustive sets are very pricey and really only for hardcore Motown fans (and I for one would love to collect all of those sets one day, but purchasing the entire 1960's collection would run over one thousand dollars!!).
With this box set, of course everything cannot be represented, but a 100+ song collection for (as of now) 35 bucks is a real bargain for a casual fan looking for a basic overall Motown song experience.

  2. After visitng the Motown Museum, this complilation of hits was just what we needed for great memories. Takes one back to their dancing days!

  3. I was a little torn about whether to purchase this box set. I already own many of the cuts. But there are so many great songs from the time when I was a huge Motown fan that I decided to get it. Putting all the hits (and not just the most familiar) together makes for a fun collection. It is great to listen to while at work or on the road.

  4. The Motown Hits Collection is absolutely marvelous! It is a varied collection of memories and history of music in the 60's and 70's from the African-American perspective. It is music for those who enjoy excellent musical arrangements, clear and wholesome lyrics, and music that is filled with love and inspiration from the Motown writers, arrangers, and singers. Above all, it is tribute to Barry Gordy who founded Motown when our world was in racial and political turmoil. He reached in and made some sense of it all. Thanks to him, Smoky Robinson, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Ashford and Simpson, The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terell, Kim Weston, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, The Marvelettes, Martha and The Vanellas, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Temptations, Gladys Knight and The Pips, Diana Ross, and many others for making this magnificant music that we have today. This music is timeless and universal. It's guaranteed to please, to soothe, to stimulate, to conjure up memories, and to entertain your deepest sense of pleasure. Sit back, quiet your mind, listen, snap your fingers, stomp your feet as you journey into a galaxy of historical and musical delight.

  5. This set was PURPOSELY mastered in all mono, for the uninformed complainers among you! These are the tracks THE WAY THEY WERE ORIGINALLY RELEASED AND THE WAY YOU STILL HEAR THEM ON THE RADIO TODAY!

Motown had been releasing stereo versions of these songs on CD for YEARS starting in about 1985-86. Many customers complained that those were NOT the versions they had remembered hearing, in the 1960s OR the 1980s (on oldies radio). The artists' voices sounded wrong, for one thing. That's because the stereo versions were usually NEW recordings made with the artist RE-SINGING the song--and they sounded different--not the way we remembered. So, Motown in 1992 brought in top remastering engineers to go through the original tapes and re-master the original hits, the way they were originally cut, as SUNG originally.

This set represents the fruit of those efforts, and it is SUPERB. The mono recordings at all times have more punch than the stereo verions, since the stereo cuts were made for albums compiled LATER. The stereo effect itself was often a phony "stereo-like" dilution only, not true stereo. The true hit versions are what you hear on this unrivaled set.

The complaining reviewers here simply have no idea about the history of this set, which was a MAJOR project undertaken to bring back the best and ACTUAL sound, period.

My only concern . . . "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye was, as I recall, the name of a song and its album. It was released on the album first, hence the mono version on this boxed set (which isn't as smooth and is more "funky" to me), was the afterthought version. While mono, it's NOT the original, so I don't see why it's here.

Otherwise, the only omission of real substance on this set appears to be some of the early Supremes hits . . . though, to me, if anything has been overplayed for years, those were the songs, and hence were the best choice to be omitted.

This set is the definitive Motown box set, ESPECIALLY CONCERNING AUDIO QUALITY. Those who desire stereo are just asking for the inferior versions. And those versions were available for years, because the Motown executives interviewed in the early 1990s indicated that they thought (wrongly) that stereo would be preferred on CD, even at the expense of having the true hit versions. They admitted their error, sought to correct it, and this project is the end result.

5 comments about Unearthed (5CD).

  1. This is a moving and wonderful collection of songs, the last work of such a fine talent. I've played this umpteen times and it's worth every penny. Sensational recordings, and if you liked the American sessions with Rick Rubin, you'll love this.

Fantastic. Worth buying just to hear "The L&M Don't Stop Here Anymore."

  2. One thing you need to do is buy this box-set and the next thing you need to do is listen to it and be absolutely astound with the lyrics and just how great this collection this is. You will NOT be disappointed. I guarantee it!

  3. i personally believe that you should have everything that johnny cash recorded with rick rubin. together they made stunning americana music that is a pinnacle of the genre. this box set is very, very wonderful. i would suggest that you first get the 5 individual volumes of mr cash's "american recordings," then pick this up as icing on the cake. the only reason that i don't think this to be quite 5 star worthy is that disc 4 is an all gospel set titled "my mother's hymn book," which, while still a very good listen, is not quite up to par with the other cash/rubin work. also, disc 5 is simply a collection of tracks from the previous american recordings releases and is completely pointless here, as all true cash fans will already have these. anyway, the voice of mr cash is an amazing instrument to hear, truly spine-tingling on many of the songs collected here, and i highly, highly recommend that you pick this massive gathering of performances up.

  4. I received the boxed CD set quickly and in great condition. I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

  5. Several other reviewers went into great detail on each CD in this set, and I see no need to duplicate their comments, so I'll keep it as brief as possible.

I assume, if you're reading these reviews, you're familiar with Cash's albums on the American label and are interested in hearing more. If that's the case, definitely buy this set - it is very much worth the money. Other than the final "best of American" CD (which seems pointless, as others have mentioned), every CD in this set is simply outstanding. This is not a box set of rejects and b-sides, but a collection of songs that could have been award-winners on their own. It really is hard to believe some of these songs didn't make the cut when they put the original American albums together. It's even hard to recognize some of the covers, because they all sound like Cash originals. His passion, distinctiveness, and talent are evident on just about every song.

Beyond the beauty of Cash as an artist, these discs stand out because of the incredible sound. They are very clean, clear, and pure-sounding.

For any fan of Cash - long time listener or newcomer - this is a set well worth the price. It contains a little bit of something reminiscent of every stage of his career. Simply great.

  1. I only wish I could have been there! The Band and their friends out on a great show and the these CDs are the next best thing to having been there.

  2. Anyone who has purchased The Last Waltz in the abridged versions really needs to consider adding this full expanded set to their libraries.

  3. Here's my story. I'm about 10 years too young to have caught The Band in their heyday. Here comes the 21st century. Teenagers. Video games. PS3. Bluray. I got The Last Waltz movie as a freebie. It sat in the cabinet for about 6 months. Eventually, I put it in the player . . . Honest to God this has got to be the best film and album of all time. Unbelievable. I'm floored. Buy this album without hesitation and throw everything else out.

  4. A great rendition of a historic concert, "The Last Waltz" boxset is a perfect addition to the movie DVD, and a real must-have to all Band fans. That's a piece of Rock history right there, don't miss it.

  5. The Band's "The Last Waltz" concert still sounds as fresh and innovative now as it did when it was first released ~30 years ago. It's amazing that none of the music has gone out of date. I like having all of the extra tracks that weren't released previously. Many of the best musicians of that era performed at the concert.

5 comments about Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings.

  1. What a great idea this is! Basically this box set gathers the band's five excellent albums together which are "Outlandos d'Amour" (1978), "Reggatta de Blanc" (1979), "Zenyatta Mondatta" (1980), "Ghost In The Machine" (1981), and "Synchronicity" (1983) plus many b-sides that range from studio recordings not included in the albums or live tracks.

Of course all tracks have been remastered so if you are thinking about getting the Police albums, this is the way to do it! But to complete the collection you should also get the excellent double live album that was released in 1995 too! So don't forget about that. It includes two concerts. One from 1979 and the other from 1983.

For fans of the late 70's new wave movement or rock in general this group featuring Sting on vocals/bass, Andy Summers on guitar and sometimes vocals, and the awesome drumming from Stewart Copeland is essential listening as their fusion of reggae, rock, and other styles became hugely influential.
Thanks for taking the time to read!
    Later...

  2. The complete works of The Police in a four disc collection. A great classic compilation of the recordings done by The Police. If you are a fan then this collection is well worth it.

  3. Message in a Box is an amazing box set, with every song The Police have ever played, and it is all neatly placed in chronological order. The Box Set also comes with a biography of the band, from their humble beginnings as a pseudo punk group, to the amazing Reggaesque group that epitamized there career. Sting and The Police were lyrical geniuses, and were candid when discussing anything from temptation(Don't Stand So), obsession(Every Breath You Take), and even the misery of war(Canary in a Coalmine, and Invisible Sun). For any classic rock listener out there, I highly recommend this band, it just kicks butt!

  4. I first started listening to The Police when I was in middle high school and never got tired of them. Most of the songs on this CD set reminded me of specific times throughout my middle to high school years. They also became subjects of conversations I had with friends in college about the bands we listened to while in high school. The Police still rocks!

  5. You cannot ask for more. Every song, four discs, chronological, and a very nicely designed case and booklet. I just got this and I absolutely love it.

  1. Oh, By the Way
I bought this Pink Floyd Oh By The Way set for around $173 from Amazon, in July of 2008. I have no problems with the set, as was mentioned in other reviews. The labeling for Ummagumma and The Wall are OK. All inserts are included. I did not know about the Japanese mini-sleeves released in 2001 before I made this purchase. Who knows whether those will ever be released again or how much they might cost? I notice in some photos that the box is blue-colored. Mine is brown. Was there a North American set and a UK version? Is this an Import? Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase.

  2. What is on this band's mind? I was looking forward this season to a 40th anniversary of Saucerful in both mono and stereo with some outtakes and the rest of the singles, Point Me, It Would Be Nice, etc, Careful and Julia in mono, how 'bout it? But Noooooooooooo...Hey a great seasonal buy: Jethro Tull Living in the Past original replica and re-mastered both for the first time ever and This Was w/BBC and mono mixes. See guys?

  3. Among the known mistakes listed, the label misprint of Ummagumma and the misprint of The Wall 2nd sleeve, my box also don't have the Wish you Were Here postcard. I have contacted EMI asking an solution.

Too many mistakes in a EMI/PF product. The rest is in good state. Also missing an CD with extras and Relics replica. A book with career pictures should be nice too.

Some remasters are not so good, like AMLOR.

  4. before you buy this you should have a look at the store or somewhere.
I expected it in higher quality. the quality is not as good and nice as the Shine on Box

  5. Why even bother with this box set, especially for $170-plus? Oh yeah, two coasters. In 20 years, it might be worth $250 to collectors in a sealed state. Stick with the remastered releases and save your money. If you are looking for collector-quality Pink Floyd releases, then go after the Mobile Fidelity releases of AHM, DSOM, Meddle, and The Wall. Heck, even Japanese vinyl releases are more worthwhile than this tripe of a boxset. This here is a rip-off.

  1. This CD does live up to it reviews. It is an excellent compilation of the decades passed. i love it. A must have for any karaoke r.

  2. The music is not the original artists but is music "made famous by the original artist" and is only evident once you read the fine print. It seems a bit dishonest to use the Billboard Top 10 as a selling vehicle. I rated the item a 4 because the music is ok and after all it is Karaoke. Worst of all is the price--I found these at Walmart for $30.

  3. The songs are fine, but there is no way to tell how close you are to the next lyric when in between verses. Unless you know the songs it can be tough to track. Many other competitors have ...s or something to signal how close you are to the next verse.

5 comments about The Layla Sessions : 20th Anniversary Edition.

  1. I Like the Jams. They're the best part. My son gave this to me for a christmas present. Makes a great gift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. First off i don't agree with the gordon fella down below or the person who said that remixing these tracks brings the bass and drums down, I can hear them just as well..that being said this is a pretty good box set..even though I only care for one song on the jams disc and one or two on the third disc..The original Layla and assorted love songs is great and included(obviously) but why does everyone put so much emphasis on Eric Clapton, Duane Allman MADE Derek and the Dominos, pushed Clapton further than anyone and just had fun. Without him there would be no Layla(he played lead and both slide takes at the end) and well there wouldn't be a box set for this great music..Once again Clapton takes all the credit. Clapton begged Allman do join him, but he didn't..sorry just rambling, but to get to the point, all in all it is a great box set, I mean anything with Howard is great..
    REMEMBER DUANE ALLMAN

  3. This album is more than a classic, it's a must have to complete a classic collection. Eric Clapton poors his heart out over his one true love. The Dominos are the final touch. Duane Allman was alive and an intrecal entity on this album.
I highly recommend this album to any Eric Clapton or Allman Bros. fam. To me, IT'S THE BEST!!! I was there when it was first released and I fell in love with the album, the songs, I felt the pain of unrequited love and immediately became a bigger Eric Clapton fan than ever before.

  4. This is a must for any Clapton, Duane Allman fan. The Jams CD is worth it alone. Jam # 5 will blow you away, Allman hits the notes he was famous for. This is buried treasure that is waiting on you. Any jamband fan will love it. Keep jamming America.
Philip. Simpsonville, SC 12-31-07. What will 2008 bring?

  5. What more can possibly be said about this album? You have two of the greatest guitarists of all time jamming together. The alternate versions of "Have you ever loved a woman" & "Tell the truth" are amazing. The real find here is the disc containing "The Jams". A couple of these jams have Dicky Betts joining in with the band. Clapton's guitar is searing throughout, and if anyone wants to know just how great a guitar player Duane Allman was, this is the album to listen to. The version of "Little Wing" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. If you are a classic rock fan this album is a must. You won't stop playing it. You can keep your Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Zakk Wylde & yes, even Eddie Van Halen. These two blow them all away!!!
