5 comments about Time 3.

  1. Arrived without a scratch.
And these 3 cd's simply makes you feel good, if you like Journey.
A lot of interesting details to find in the booklet. Absolutely great stuff

  2. Thank you Amazon.
I am very happy by yours service.
Journey is the very good band!!!
The "Time 3" cd is the best Journey album.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Fabricio - São Paulo, Brazil

  3. It's a great triple cd album of Journey with a great boocklet with photos and history.
Para los que lean esto en castellano es una pieza indispensable en la discografia de cualquier fan de Journey....

  4. If you can't afford to replace all your old vinyl with the CD updates then this may be the compilation for you. It contains an interesting mix of old (pre-escape) and newer (escape-onwards) material, plus some that don't appear to be included on other albums. I've never been a big fan of the pre "Escape" Journey material, but with multiple listenings one or two of the older tracks have become firmly integrated into my 'favorites' now...
My main critisism of this album is the cover. Although it's by the same artist as the Classic "Escape" album, it has a look of a hastily scibbled pre-production version, coloured-in with a *bumper pack* of felt tip pens. ...very shoddy artwork indeed. yeuch!

I wouldn't call this a *must have* for Classic Journey fans, but if you're that way inclined, then I'm sure you'll enjoy this 3-CD collection.

  5. For its time Times3 was a very good box set. The booklet explaining the history of Journey alone is worth the money. The B-sides included: For You, Good Times, La Raza del Sol, Only Solutions, Liberty, All That Really Matters, With a Tear and Into Your Arms. "For You" featured a lead singer {Fleischman} who's almost a Perry Clone. Fleischman wrote Wheel in the Sky and the song Perry sung when he auditioned for Journey. "Good Times" was Perry's tribute to Sam Cooke that never made any album. La Raza del Sol, Only Solutions and Liberty were out-takes from the Frontier era. Of those songs, Liberty, was by far my favorite out-take. Extended, I think it could have been a big hit. "All That Really Matters" is the lone song from the bands latter era where Perry isn't singing lead vocals. The final two songs "With A Tear" and "Into Your Arms" were meant for the Raised on Radio. The most disappointing part of this Box Set is Perry did not return to add lyrics to these two unfinished songs. They were simply added as insturmentals but when I hear them I always feel that they were meant to be. I also really enjoyed the live version of I'll Be Alright Without You. Of course this box sex excludes material from Trial By Fire because that album was released after the box set was made.

5 comments about Music to Crash Your Car To, Vol. 2.

  1. If your like me and love crue, then don't hesitate to pick up Music to crach your car to, vol. 2. It's a must have to add to your collection of one of the best bands on the go (and still going)

  2. Fantastic product. New and old Crue songs, remixed and live. Great pictures and comic book included.

  3. Even though I prefer the 80's Motley Crue era music to that of the 90's, this set does a great job of giving you the next installment of music after their first 4 albums. It combines 5 whole albums into 4 discs without giving you anything twice. It also contains extra tracks exclusive only to this set. The packaging mirrors MTCYCT: Vol 1 so you feel like it all belongs together. The full color booklet has photos I've never seen before, plus a fold-out poster and comic book. The ONLY downsides are that it does not contain the original album covers, and there are no photos of John Corabi. Even though he's not the original singer, I'd rather have pictures of him than Vince during his PHP (Pink Hair Period).

  4. Motley Crue has been popular for over twenty years, and they were one of the few bands that survived once the hair metal era was dead and over with and grunge had taken over. And now, thanks to all of the artists/bands from different decades who have had their own box sets, it is great to see that Motley Crue has had TWO box sets. Their first box set, "Music To Crash Your Car To", had a pretty positive fan reaction to it, but if you can't tell by reading some of the other customer reviews on here, the reaction most Crue fans have had to this box set has not been too good. I picked up a copy of this box set today, and I was really excited after I bought it. As a matter of fact, I am listening to it as I type this. So,how does this box set measure up compared to the negative reaction it has been getting from most Crue fans? Read on for my review of this:

    Pros:

Following up on where Volume One of this box set left off with the albums "Too Fast For Love"(1982), "Shout At The Devil"(1983), "Theatre Of Pain"(1985), and "Girls, Girls, Girls"(1987), this box set contains the four albums Motley Crue recorded after those albums: "Dr. Feelgood"(1989, which made it at #1 on the Billboard charts),their first greatest hits package "Decade Of Decendance:81-91"(1991),their self-titled grunge album with John Corabi on lead vocals(1994),and the rare VERY hard to find "mail order only" "Queternary" EP (1994)which also featured John Corabi on lead vocals and also found Motley Crue attempting grunge. If You're new to Motley Crue and don't own any of their albums, this box set will be a great starter for you, and not only that, you will find yourself lucky enough to buy one item from Motley Crue instead of four before(or if)you buy/decide to buy the rest of their albums.

A small booklet comes with this box set, which features liner notes written by Connecticut-based music journalist and Metal Edge Staff writer Roger Lotring. Rare photos are also to be found inside the liner notes (the only one that should not have been included in there is the picture of Nikki Sixx standing next to Mick Mars, Tommy Lee, and Vince Neil wearing none or very little clothes, yuck, who would want to see that except for mothers of hormonal teenage childern???!!!)and there is info on all of the songs/albums that this box set has with it.

A poster from the "Decade of Decedance" album comes with this, which kind of showcases the career of Motley Crue and their lives outside of the band; the poster is very cool and it is already hanging up in my room.

A comic book that has THREE comic strips inside it comes with this box set; one is called "Motley Crue:West Coast Wildmen",one is called "Snotley Crue", the other is very short and is simply titled "Addiction" while it is making fun of Nikki Sixx. Both of the comic strips are not only very funny, but they are also accurate: Motley Crue did open for KISS and they did get accused of trying to be too much like them,Nikki Sixx was once engaged to Vanity, and I won't give away everything, but if You're a die hard Motley Crue fan with a good sense of humor that already knows a lot about the band, then You'll probably enjoy these comic strips.

As I already mentioned at the top of this review, "Queternary", which was a very rare EP that was a "mail order" only thing is in here, and having it here is a nice touch, because it is very hard to find, and not even Amazon or the Barnes&Noble website has it. Not only that, if that EP wasn't here,if you wanted it,You'd probably have to hunt down several die hard Motley Crue fans that do have it.

    Cons:

The bonus tracks on the Japanese version of "Decade Of Decedance" are not to be found here, so even though the compilation producer of this box set was smart to include "Queternary" with this box set, what was he/she thinking when they decided not to include the bonus tracks available on the Japanese version of that album(Decade)?

While this box set covers stuff from the Motley Crue era with John Corabi, even though you will find his name in the liner notes (info on the albums and the story that comes before the info on the individual albums)they did not include his picture in there. Sure, Corabi wasn't Vince Neil, but since this box set has stuff from the Motley era with Corabi on lead vocals,it was inexusable not to include a picture of him with Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, and Mick Mars.

The first eleven seconds of "Power To The Music" off of the self-titled album with John Corabi were chopped off- the worst thing about it is that if You've payed close attention to that album being re-issued(the remastered album sold seperately has fifteen songs, the version on here has thirteen songs)then you may have noticed that they did not have to put the bonus tracks on a seperate disc-the version to be found here and the remastered album sold seperately.

A little bit of wrong information on the album notes for "Dr. Feelgood"- yes, Steven Tyler did sing background vocals on "Sticky Sweet" off of that album, but the guy who typed the info on the individual albums liner forgot to mention that he also did "Slice Of Your Pie"-if You've heard that song before You'll notice his vocals on that song, and not only that, in the liner notes for that album sold seperately, they even thanked him for doing the background vocals for that song.

    Overall:

Despite It's few faults, this is an excellent box set, and it is one of the few Motley Crue compilations that is worth shelling out your cash for. Still not sure whether or not you want this box set? Then log on www.real.com,install the music program Real Rhapsoady on your computer, start listening to it, and then make the decision to whether or not you want this box set.

  5. Considering that theyve only released one really good album in the last ten years(a lot of people dont cound the s/t, generation swine didnt sound like motley), and that theyve released ANOTHER greatest hits album and two catalog reissues(the only differenc being the newer ones have a video), I see no reason to get these box sets other than if you dont have the albums.

5 comments about British Invasion: 1963-1967.

  1. I've longed for a great compilation of British Invasion tunes - from '63 - '67 or thereabouts. I found it in this compilation. I love the mixture from the more rebellious to the simple pop sound that came over to give us all something to stretch even higher from. Great, simply great tunes. I could listen to these for the rest of my life, and hey - I plan to do just that.

  2. There are some good songs here, but the third CD is basically a waste. Also, it sounds like some of these selections are not the versions that were played on the radio back then. Some of them are the hit versions, but others do not sound quite right. The third CD should have contained bigger well-known hits from that time, but it just seems to be filler and nothing I care to listened to again.

  3. When will someone put only really quality songs on a retrospective CD? This is like every other "history of..." CD I have ever bought: you pay for a bunch of songs to get the few that really matter. A "British Invasion" CD without any of the Beatles early chart-toppers? Kind of silly, really. But I bought it for the few songs I had to have to cover this important era in rock history, and the sound quality did NOT disappoint.

  4. This definitive 60s british collection brought back all the memories of growing up in the 60s, which I did. 54 great tunes -- remastered bringing out all of the wonderful music of a simplier time, and a few production defects you can't hear on vinyl.

I loved it and would highly recommend buying this 3-CD collection.

    Bruce from Tallahassee

  5. This is an excellent compilation of all the top British artists of the 60's and 70's. Great for anyone who appreciates that music era

5 comments about A Half Century of Hits.

  1. This set is over billed and is missing a lot of hits also the sound of the sun material is not good they sound better on the coletable set but well worth it for the rarities should have been a four disc set where is "Hot Damm I'm A One Woman Man" and the "Rock And Roll Medley"?

  2. "Jerry Lee Lewis A Half Century of Hits" is the best Jerry Lee Lewis CD collection. Disc 1 is a collection of The Killer's great Rock and Roll classics and all original hit recordings. The second starts with his dynamic "Hi Heel Sneakers" followed by "I'm On Fire" both of which are special favorites of mine. The rest of Disc Two is also great. The version of "Your Cheating Heart" is the best I've ever heard and the version of "Whole Lot of Shakin' Goin' On" is I think as great as the original which of course starts off Disc 1. Disc 3 is the best of some of The Killer's more recent work and all the tracks are great. The disc ends off with 2 never before released recordings that JLL recorded when he was 16 years old. He is the finest rock and roll pianist, and noone could sing like him either. I have 23 other CDs by Jerry Lee. This collection is definitely a must have along with "Last Man Standing".

  3. Nice box set, very god music, but a litle to much background noise in the remastering of the old numbers.

  4. I have to give this one an "A" for effort. A 3-disc retrospective of rock 'n roll's original bad boy, with extensive liner notes, is a fine idea. But calling this a "career retrospective" is a bit misleading.

For starters, where's Lewis's first single, Crazy Arms? You read that right: His FIRST SINGLE. A 3-disc set, 65 songs, but not his very first commercially-released song? Also MIA in this set: The seemingly-biographical ballad That Lucky Old Sun (and yes, I'm aware it was recorded by others prior to Lewis's version). And whatever you might think of the 1989 film GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, the "Killer" recorded some great material, including updated versions of many of his best-known hits. There was also his 1993 "Youngblood" album.

A fourth discs of rare and unreleased songs would have also been nice, although many such gems can be found on Rhino's Rare and Rockin': Original Sun Recordings.

This may all sound like nit-picking to casual fans. And it is. And for most folks, this is all the Jerry Lee Lewis they will ever need. And I'm certainly glad to have the set in my collection. Although I have most of the songs on previously-released discs, the sound quality of those eariler recordings varies greatly. So these discs will no doubt receive some heavy rotation at my house. But if you want the WHOLE Jerry Lee Lewis story, you'll have to look elsewhere to complete your collection.

  5. This three CD set gives a wonderful feel for the range of the Legendary Jerry Lee Lewis. It covers his Sun Record years to his Honky Tonk transformation of the 1960's and 1970's. This is a must have for fans of the Killer.

Perhaps the only ommission is the lack of a couple gospel tunes. The Killer had his spirtual struggles.

5 comments about Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts From The British Empire And Beyond.

  1. I love the music. I bought this from Boarders but got a defective disk, ordered another box, got a defective disc, ordered another box, got a defective disk. After this I just had the store hold them all and I had to listen to each disk multiple times, over and over, (I can't tell you it's painful to have to do this with music you love) and between 3 boxes and 4 disks swapped in and out, I finally got a complete set that did not skip. Don't put yourself through this. Rhino has replacment disks, so don't put up with a disk that only skips in, say, one place, (by the way, none was so defective that it jammed up totally.) Hold Rhinos feet to the fire on this. I am sure there are lots of bad copies out there. It was not only this box; it was Nuggets I too that I ordered that was defective. I feel sorry for any small dealers who had to put up with disatisfied customers because Rhino wants to cut corners on production. I mean it, hold Rhino's feet to the fire because I don't trust their manufacturing anymore.

  2. I love Nuggets I & II(Children of Nuggets will be up next to listen to this week). I thought that I'd be skipping over many songs, since I'd hardly heard of any of them, but I was wrong. These volumes have clued me in on how much great music I missed the first time around in the 60's. Most of the songs hold up on their own, and should have been heard more widely on these shores. Between the quality music, and the informative notes, this is a must-hear for lovers of Rock.

  3. The bits and pieces of the British invasion that mostly never left port and a few from their neighbors is great.....all are interesting....most are just good rock 'n rolling from that time period....influences abound....its a joy and a treasure

  4. Nuggets 2 is packed. 109 songs giant booklet - great songs. Problem is atleast 30-40% of the tracks are deriative sound-alike garage rock that after listening to once i dont listen to again. I must say the booklet artwork and presentation is class all the way and there are atleast two dozen great great tunes here- especially the more pysche tinged numbers but in my humble opinion this could have been a cheaper priced double cd set that would have been flawless. If you can buy it used then its a good deal and ebay prices confirm youll make most of your money back if you just want to burn the cds. Standouts include Tomorrow- Timebox- Winstons Fumbs- Fire- The Mickey finn- The Creation and the Eyes whose "rowed out" sounds like i cant explain-! There are some obscure bands that its nice to be able to hear most likely only on this comp but wellknown groups like the Small faces and the Pretty things are not done justice with the tracks picked to represent them. Ofcourse everyone's favorite songs will always be different so this review is based on my particular views on what makes a good tune- i do prefer pysche to garage but atleast two of my favorites are total garage but with a creative (pysche twist) in particular Real Crazy Apartment by Winstons Fumbs is stellar.

  5. While the original Nuggets LP and the first box set concentrated on the American pop and rock scene, the second Nuggets box shifted its focus to the rest of the world, collecting cuts from the United Kingdom (such as the Pretty Things and the Small Faces), Canada (The Guess Who and The Haunted), Japan (The Mops), Australia (The Easybeats, The Masters Apprentices), Iceland (Thor's Hammer) and Brazil (Os Mutantes). Practically none of these songs are well known in America, with only two of them being US hits ("Friday on My Mind" by the Easybeats and "Pictures of Matchstick Men" by the Status Quo). The rest of the songs may be obscure, but they are oh so wonderful. It's like listening to the greatest hits of an alternate Earth. Fans of '60s pop and rock music, and especially the garage band sound, should get this for sure.

5 comments about Billboard Top Hits: 1980-1984.

  1. This was a great collection of music from the early 80's and it actually was a compilation of hit songs unlike some other "best of" or "greatest hits" collections that I have purchased previously. Great sound quality as well.

  2. I listened to completely different kinds of music at the time, so I didn't have many memories attached to these songs. The musical quality of the songs is actually suprisingly good, and the mastering has been done well. This is a nice review of hits of the early 1980s. Ten songs per CD isn't much, so there could have been more songs from each year.

  3. This was during Xmas 1984. One lovely girl from Texas brought to Poland (this is where I live) the 10 cassetes pack with "The Best of Billboard - 1984". I still hear this music. Now I can buy a piece of it.

To anyone who was ...teen in 1984: you have to own this one. Don't tell me there is no music you remember from these years. It must be one at least. Remember the first girlfriend. The first kiss maybe? Yes! That's it!.

  4. This set takes me back to the early days of MTV. Pac-Man fever, Atari and great times in my life. As a child of the 80s it was a special time and special music. This box set helps take you back from time to time!

  5. again billboard has done well in putting together a box set of the best songs of this time period. you will appreciate this gathering of the best. every listening minute of this box set is pure elation. not to be passed up.

5 comments about The Fabulous 50's [3-CD Set].

  1. One star minus one star=zero stars!
Buyer beware. Madacy sells the bottom of the barrel product. Bad remakes (90% of the tracks) and poorly mastered originals (the remainder). Waste of money unless you want new versions of classic records. Just note: even then, they aren't very good.
The worst part of this company and their marketing is they lead you to think you are buying original recordings.
    Don't waste your money...

  2. There is not even one original song by the original artist on this CD. Maybe that's the reason it's so inexpensive. It consists of updated versions, admittedly by the original artists, or at least parts of their groups. Frankly, I'm surprised that an organization as reputable as amazon.ca would offer them for sale without a warning to unsuspecting customers. As a person who knows rock'n'rock history, particularly the '50's and '60s, modesty side, I would place more value on the jewel box in which this CD, and others like it, are packaged than the CD's themselves. The only reason I rated it "1" is that the option of "0" isn't available.

  3. These CD's rock. There is not a reason out there, for you not to own these. If Superman enjoys this music, you will also.

  4. I was not expecting this set to be of non-original recordings and was disappointed that it wasn't mentioned in any part of the ad. Some of the tracks are pretty good, but I was expecting originals.

  5. Don't buy anything on this label. Ever. Only 2 minor flaws - they are either not the original recording (alternate tracks or rerecordings)or the correct track was mastered from a record fulminating in your Aunt Gertrude's closet for the past 30 years.

  1. Somewhat like a stripped down keyboard-less Planet X, Devil's Slingshot manages to straddle the line between progressive metal and fusion gracefully thanks to these incredible talents. The requisite tasty and chromatically tinged riffs are back from MacAlpine, while Sheehan does an admirable job of adding some melodic ideas as well as low end. And enough cannot be said about Virgil Donati... truly the greatest drummer I know of. A unique and solid effort from these three, with a very basic production that gives equal sonic space to all of them. If you like music to be harmonically and rhythmically unique, or if you like fusion (especially the heavier side of it), this album is a no-brainer.

  2. When I first heard this album, I had just put down Chromaticity and Premonition, and I had to say, this album threw me a curve ball at first. It's NOTHING like any of Tony's earlier work, which is both a good and bad thing.

It's great to hear someone go in a new direction and honestly not sound like they're repeating themselves. The songs did this in particular when it came to the time signatures they were written in. Right now, I'm listening to "Injustice Line" (for like the thirtieth time) and the main riff still gnaws at me (it's in 10/8 time and is very challenging to listen to).

Basically, you should expect a lot of odd time signatures. Also, Billy didn't rip like he usually did. In fact a good primer for this album is the Steve Vai Live in Astoria DVD. You'll notice that Tony's style of playing on that DVD was really abstract and a bit of indication on where this album was going.

Like I said in the title however, once it grows on you, you'll really like it, but you gotta listen to it more than once.

    My favorite tracks are:
Nederland - very heavy riffs in 6/8. no real melody however...
Def B*tch Blues - great lydian solo!
Lay Off - great heavy stuff
Ocean and Hourglass - uptempo rock with quirky time changes..

    check it out!

  3. This album has the best Tony Macalpine guitar playing in years. His soloing is compact, very fluid. The song structure is similar to the Planet X material. Billy Sheehan plays awesome and Virgil does is signature odd tempo drumming. I was pleasantly surprised with this production.

5 comments about Wipers Box Set.

  1. Band leader and songwriter Greg Sage (guitar/vocals) formed this awesome punk trio in 1977. Included in this mini box set are the band's first three albums which are: "Is This Real?" (1980), "Youth Of America" (1981), and "Over The Edge" (1983). They have been remastered and sound better than ever! Plus there are a lot of bonus tracks that range from alternate takes of songs from the albums, a couple of unreleased songs, and alternate mixes. Also included is a pretty good booklet that features liner notes that explain the recording of the albums and band line-up, all written by Greg Sage himself!

The three albums are all excellent and show the songwriting talent of Sage. This band became influential for the grunge movement too as Kurt Cobain from Nirvana covered the songs "D7" and "Return Of The Rat" from the debut album. However there's so much more to this band than those two songs. In this debut there is a nice ballance of pop infused punk with more dark sounding songs. Highlights? "Mystery", the title cut, "Tragedy", "Let's Go Away", "Telepathic Love" and "Wait One Minute"!
For the second album, Sage got a little more experimental. The title track "Youth Of America" is more than ten minutes long with a phsychedelic middle section while the rest of the songs continue in the dark direction. Standout songs are "When It's Over", "Can This Be", and the album title cut. For the third album, Sage mixed the dark sounding songs with the pop direction more prominent on the first album and the outcome is a fantastic record all the way through! Favorites include "Doom Town", "So Young", "Generation Gap", "What Is", and the excellent "No One Wants An Alien"!

Those are only some highlights though. I'll say this is the definitive way of acquiring these awesome albums by this sadly overlooked band called The Wipers.
All three albums are underground punk classics to say the least!
Thanks for taking the time to read!
    Later...

  2. The Wipers had some really great tunes and were fronted by Greg Sage, a supremely prolifict song-writer who would often go against the grain of style present in the American underground of the late seventies and eighties. Long songs, solos, melody... Still, a lot of us would come to recognize the Wipers as cult heroes and their albums classics. If you're young, or from the east, then you've probably onyl heard the Wipers via Cobain's gushing in the early ninties and Nirvana's covers. Be sure to check out the source.

My favorite song, bar none, is "Mystery." The song comes off the "Is This Real" album. There's also a demo version, which, to be honest, I prefer. You really get your money here; the first three albums plus the amount of songs availible to us back in the eighties is doubled for you here with the inclusion of unheard demos, live songs, and alternate versions. A valuable, inspiring, collection.

  3. I got this cd for My grandson (off his birthday list) and he loved it!

  4. every year brings not only great new music to the ears, but also great music that was somehow missed when first released. this set of 3 albums recorded between 1980 and 1982 (with plenty of bonus tracks thrown in) is a fantastic batch of punk/post-punk recordings. greg sage is such a talented guitarist i can't believe he flew under my radar for so long. quite a find, this. while i would not rate it quite as highly as i do husker du, it is pretty close; and i would say that all fans of husker du should have this. after 1st hearing this, i purchased a couple of other wipers cds and a solo greg sage effort, as well. everything is excellent. i highly recommend this to punk rockers, post-punk rockers, and all fans of rock and roll in general.
