  1. This album, along with TEASING YOU and SOUL'S EDGE, feature Snooks at the top of his game. He has one of the baddest rhythm sections around, the George Porter Jr. Trio, backing him up on all three of those records. If you love american R'n'B, Soul and Classic Blues you will love this record. Snooks is ferocious on guitar and the opening cut "Quaker City" features some of the most interesting and deeply felt Blues guitar you will ever hear. But, besides all the amazing guitar work, it is the warmth and joy in this man's heart which comes through strongest. You can't help but feel his passion and joy for life in this CD. Buy it if you want to feel good about life.

  2. Excellent live album - makes you feel like you are there! Guitar sounds great in a variety of settings. Very different from most of your average blues albums.

  3. One of the most spectacular practicioners of the lost art of rhythm guitar(to say nothing of his lead work), Snooks can literally burn up the fretboard. He is a living repository of 1000's of tunes and a link to a type of traditional singing and playing that died with the advent of modern recording technology. To call this music 'blues' or 'soul' is a disservice, labels cannot contain the music of Snooks Eaglin.

  1. It's real! It's raw! It's gut-level! There is no slick production work. They didn't clean it up so it'll go down easy. It's down home cookin' - none o' this fancy white tablecloth eats. It's from the soil and you can taste the dirt! You ain't gonna like it at first, but it's gonna become part o' yo' soul an' then you gonna crave it.

  2. I never knew this music existed -- until I got this CD. What great stuff! I especially like the "Denomination Blues" played on the rare pianola. It has an amazingly delicate sound, with lyrics sometimes funny, sometimes quite poignant. Also great is "City of Refuge" (what a gruff voice!), the fabulous harmonies of "Stay on the Right Side" (did Take 6 study the Blue Chips?), and the calmly confident "Jesus Gonna Make up my dying Bed." This is "religious" music sung by people who really believed what they were singing - and it shows!

  1. I just received this dvd today, I can't say enough of the quality of the players. The harmonica is mind blowing, it is non stop blues harmonica, the guitar playing is top notch along with the vocals. The bass player also does a great solo, all 3 except for the drummer sing, and the drummer (Pat Ford) has excellent talent as a drummer & band leader a must have for blues lovers. What an overlooked item.

  1. Some of the great harmonica players have passed on like Junior Wells and Little Walter. We are fortunate to have a legend that's living - Rod Piazza. Along with his band The Mighty Flyers, they deliver on "Tough And Tender" equalling their great live reputation in the studio. "The Flyers" general approach to the Blues is positive, fun and with a feeling and you get all that on this disc. The eleven songs are all original with the added spark coming from guitarist Rick Holmstrom, especially on "Quicksand". I also recommend searching out Piazza's session work on the Michelle Shocked song "Graffiti Limbo", you won't be disappointed.

  2. I first heard Rod and Honey Piazza and Rick Holmes in San Francisco, and became an instant fan. Theirs is a style of blues music that is unique. Rod's harmonica sounds like an organ, and there is simply NOT a better boogey woogey pianist than Honey. Add L.A. Holmes' guitar and you have a foot stomping, lip whistling, rocking style of blues that grabs you and won't let go. I guarantee you will play this one over and over and over and over.......

  3. I especially like the songs Tough and Tender, Blues and Trouble..

  4. PIANO AND BASS BOOGIE DON'T COME ANY BETTER THAN THIS. IT KEEPS ALL PARTS OF YOUR BODY MOVING FROM START TO FINISH. THIS IS THE BEST OF ROD'S WORKS AND HONEY MAKES THE MOST OF IT.

  5. Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers preform a solid set of west coast blues. If you like toe tappin, finger poppin dance blues, this is it. Honey Piazza plays the boggie woogie piano like she has an extra set of hands. Her sure to be a classic "Hang Ten Boogie" is as good as it gets in paino solos. Rick Holmsroms fat body guitar work is flawless as is the rest of the band. If you get a chance to see this group in a club, get in, get close, and get down.

  1. This promotional CD on Monster Music was a gift from the founder of Monster Cable products, "Head Monster" Noel Lee, to hi-fi sales people and industry insiders circa 2001 - 2002. Lee has many friends in the music business and has collected in this album some real gems from artists who, while not exactly mainstream, will mostly be familiar to blues afficianados. The basis for the selections is, first and foremost, the quality of the recordings, as the intended purpose of these discs was to demonstrate high-end audio systems. For this reason, most of the recordings feature somewhat simple arrangements that are recorded without a lot of processing or dubbing. The sound from this disc, especially on a nice system, is rich, detailed, and three-dimensional, making it a nice addition to any collection, and an especially good disc for showing off a system's timbral balance and depth. Recommended.

  1. I am just discovering traditional blues and I play this CD nearly every day! Anyone know who the woman is who sings on this disc?

  2. Like the other listeners here I wore this out on vinyl, I had it on tape, and now I have a CD. Whatever the next thing is, I am getting this. This is as good a place as any to start with Willie McTell's music. It is so good that there are now a number of McTell CDs, because he is worth listening to for hours, and every bit of his playing and singing he's engaged, communicating signifying. McTell's style is a great combination of ragtime and swing finger picking in a way that rocks in his own way. There's a biting whit, and great feeling coming through too.
You will smile when you hear this. you will pat your feet, you will listen hard. You will love this and want more. That's why we've all owned this on vinyl, tape, and CD.

  3. I've owned two copies of this on vinyl--wore the first one out. It's short by CD standards, but has most of his best recordings. "Statesboro Blues," "Broke Down Engine," "Love Changin' Blues,".....

It offers a good overview of McTell's style featuring blues, ragtime, and several sides where he played slide. If you don't have any of McTell's recordings, this is a good place to start.

  4. I owned this on vinyl for years and never tired of listening to it. The sound quality is better than many of Yazoo's other recordings from the '20's and '30's. This is a classic that deserves a much wider audience. Try it, maybe it will become one of your favorites too.
